My Years Reflection 1990

It's my 30th birthday year.  As part of my celebrations, I thought I would take my birthday month to reflect on my life.  To help, I am using some of my scrapbooked pages to illustrate my life.  For each year, I've chosen a few pages to highlight that year.  I hope you enjoy my look back as much as I do.

1990:  Eight years old... and my life is spent going to school and hanging out with friends.  I lived on a coul-de-sac at the very end.  My great grandma Helen lived right next door.  Her garage became a meeting place for neighborhood children.  It was the perfect hangout for elementary students.

Page 1:  My best friend in third grade Alice Tung.  She lived with her mother, father, grandma, and sister Nina two streets over.  I was finally given permission to travel to and from her house by myself.  Such freedom!    On a side out, check out those pink glasses.  Awesome!

Page 2:  Christmas was always spent in three different places.  Eve night we would travel to Great Aunt Alys' house for dinner, presents, and celebration of Great Grandma Helen's birthday.  Obviously, Christmas Morning was spent at my own house opening presents.  And Christmas Day we traveled to my dad's family for dinner and more presents.  Always so much fun!

My Years Reflection 1989

It's my 30th birthday year.  As part of my celebrations, I thought I would take my birthday month to reflect on my life.  To help, I am using some of my scrapbooked pages to illustrate my life.  For each year, I've chosen a few pages to highlight that year.  I hope you enjoy my look back as much as I do.

1989:  Seven years old.  Making some great school friends.  Tackling the first grade.  I got it all under control.  But for some reason I can't find many pictures at all.

Page 1: Those glasses are just atrocious and that collar is huge.  But it's still the 80s so I forgive it.  I had to include these great pictures of my dog.  He was adorable when just a puppy.  If only he had stayed that way.

How I Got It: I own it!

Delia Chandler, an eighteen-year-old Southern girl, marries Viscount Ivor Conisborough just before World War II, becoming part of the Windsor court. It’s every girl’s dream come true. But Delia is jolted from her pleasant life when she realizes, after the birth of her two daughters, that Ivor chose her only to bear an heir to his estate. Shortly thereafter, she begins an affair with her husband’s handsome, titled, and frequently scandalous best friend.

When Conisborough is appointed as an adviser to King Fuad of Egypt, Delia exchanges one palace circle for another, far different one. While she sees Egypt as a place of exile, her two daughters regard Egypt as their home. Only when war comes to Cairo—and Delia finally reveals the secret she has kept for so long—can she begin to heal the divisions separating her from those she loves.

Based off of the summary, this is Delia's story.  But upon reading the book, it's not just Delia's story.  The book jumps narration partway through.  We get sections narrated by Delia's daughter Petra, her daughter Davina, family friend Jack, and even a new aquaintance Darius.  These switches created a very disjointed feel to the book.  As soon as I got used to a voice, it switched.  I was a bit disconcerted.  My other issue with this book was that it seemed like a five book series smashed into one book.  I would have happily explored each part for  300-400 pages.  Instead we go from 1910s to 1940s.  Too much material in too short of pages.

All of this is not to say I hated the book.  I actually liked the characters.  I liked the mix of fiction and historical events.  I liked Dean's style of writing.  I just really wanted more.  More pages, more depth, more focus on big events.  Just more.  I will read more of Dean...  Hopefully her other books won't have the same problems.

My Years Reflection 1988

It's my 30th birthday year.  As part of my celebrations, I thought I would take my birthday month to reflect on my life.  To help, I am using some of my scrapbooked pages to illustrate my life.  For each year, I've chosen a few pages to highlight that year.  I hope you enjoy my look back as much as I do.

1988: I'm six years old.  Microsoft released Windows 2.1. The Iran-Iraq War ends.  The Summer Olympics are held in Seoul, South Korea.  NASA resumes space shuttle flights with Discovery.  George H.W. Bush defeats Michael Dukakis in the Presidential Election.  --  I only remember the space shuttle flight, we watched all of the lift-offs at school.  To be fair, I was six!

Page 1:  I started school!  Look at me, in my popped collar (not on purpose) and teddy bear sweater vest.  I am ready for the big world of kindergarten.  As part of our first homework assignment, we had to fill out our autobiography.  Most of us couldn't really write yet, so I dictated the information to my dad.  Of special note is the future career plans: "a checkout girl at Scotts (local grocery store chain)."  I always thought it would be fun to scan the food and take money.  High aspirations I know, but hey I was six.  The funny part is that in high school I was a checkout girl at Scotts!  Too funny!

Page 2: Check out my birthday crown!  I loved  that little thing made of paper.  It made me feel so special.  The other picture I love is of my cat.  Yup I had a cat, for about 3 days.  She was found as a stray by my mom's workplace.  She took the cat home.  Unfortunately the cat had many things wrong including parasites.  It died three days later.  We buried the cat out back in what become our creepy little pet semetary complete with the cat, hamsters, and many many angel fish (too big to flush).

Quote Wednesday - Michelangelo

I saw the angel in the marble and I just chiseled till I set him free. -- Michelangelo

I love the simplicity of Michelangelo's quote.  He saw the beauty that could be and created it.  There was no divine intervention, no long drawn out artistic speech.  He saw, he did.  Beside the fact that he had such great talent, I envy Michelangelo in his simple outlook.  When I want to create, I obsess.  I think about what I want to do, how to do it, where I could go wrong.  I don't just create.  I need to focus on my crafting techniques.  I want to just do.  And however it comes out, it is.  I won't obsess over perfection.  I am sure that Michelangelo had many pieces left unfinished.  We see only the greatness of his work.  But I want to not be shamed by the unfinished, the imperfect.  I want to create.  And if I create something beautiful, I want to revel in its beauty without boasting.  Wish me luck...

My Years Reflection 1987

It's my 30th birthday year.  As part of my celebrations, I thought I would take my birthday month to reflect on my life.  To help, I am using some of my scrapbooked pages to illustrate my life.  For each year, I've chosen a few pages to highlight that year.  I hope you enjoy my look back as much as I do.

1987: I was five!  This is where my life really started (at least according to my memories).  We moved, I got a dog, I started kindergarten.  It was a great year!

Page 1:  My first trip to Disney World!  I loved every minute of it.  I especially liked meeting Cinderella. Let's face it, little girls love meeting the princesses.  We even had dinner in the castle.  For some reason the only pics I could find were of me and Cinderella and me on Dumbo.  Odd, I am sure there were more.  Oh well, you still get the idea.

Page 2: We built a house!  Of course it is decorated in 1980s chic.  Note the frilly red and white strawberry curtains in the kitchen.  Ugly!  But I loved that house.  It is the first one where I can recall the entire layout and decor.  I especially loved watching it being built as evidenced by my twirling in the frame.

Page 3: Excuse the blurry photography.  But notice the wondrous pink and white bedroom!  I loved that bedroom.  Later on, I even got my own desk to go to the right of the window.  I still have that quilt hanging on the wall.  If I'm not mistaken, my late great-grandma Helen (in pic above) made it for me.  The other highlight of the year was getting a dog: Milkdud.  Isn't he adorable?  In reality, he loved to bite and raise holy hell all over the house.

My Years Reflection 1986

It's my 30th birthday year.  As part of my celebrations, I thought I would take my birthday month to reflect on my life.  To help, I am using some of my scrapbooked pages to illustrate my life.  For each year, I've chosen a few pages to highlight that year.  I hope you enjoy my look back as much as I do.

1986:

So I was four, but I do have some memories from that year.  I remember living in the trailer with my best friend Kristina just down the street. I remember my babysitter was Kristina's mom.  I didn't go to preschool, but just child care.

Page 1: Notice the beautiful Strawberry Shortcake cake.  I loved watching that cartoon.  So much fun.  I wanted to be Strawberry Shortcake.  And the cake came from Scott Bakery.  We bought all of our birthday cakes from that same bakery all the way until I went to college.  Unfortunately, they are no longer in business. Their cake will be missed.

Music Monday -- 1982

Happy Birthday to Me Edition!

As part of my ongoing celebration for my 30th birthday, I am highlighting some popular songs from throughout my years.  Songs were picked based off of a list of Grammy award winners and Billboard Top 100.  Then, I chose my favorites to highlight.

Year: 1982 (It's my birth year!)

Book: TBD

Music Selections:

  1. Joan Jett and the Blackhearts "I Love Rock n Roll" -- Has always been a favorite of mine and one of my go-to karaoke songs.
  2. The Human League "Don't You Want Me" -- So incredibly 80s...  Everytime I hear this song, I go back to scenes of me dancing around the living room with pom poms or a fairy wand or something similar.
  3. John Cougar Melloncamp "Jack and Diane" -- I don't care what he says his name is now to me it will always be John Cougar.  And this one was one I remember hearing all the time as a child.
  4. The Clash "Should I Stay" -- Such a classic song.  And bonus points: the boys love The Clash.
  5. Modern English "I Melt with You" -- About a couple making love while nuclear bombs fall.  Creepy, but I somehow always loved this song.

30 Years Ago Today...

  30 Years ago today....

I was pulled into this world by forceps screaming my little red face off.  It's my birthday day today!  How am I going to celebrate??  By going to work.  Yep that's right.  I get to work on my birthday.  But that's okay.  I plan on eating crap all day and not cooking or planning dinner tonight.  Later I must watch Logan's Run in all its beautiful cheesy glory.  Gotta go... my palm is flashing.

 Run, Runner, Run!

Instead of daily posts, I thought it would be a lot easier for me and you if I did weekly update posts.  These will track my progress each week.  I will highlight what I’ve done, what I want to do, and any interesting tidbits.  Sometimes I’ll add pictures and/or links.  Hopefully these posts will keep me accountable to me list…

Monthly Goal

Our James Bond month has turned into the James Bond quarter.  That's okay, we're getting there.  We only have Pierce and Daniel to get through...  I need to start my 200 squat challenge.  I was supposed to do that in February, but that didn't happen obviously.  So on to March.

The Sunday Salon #4

The Sunday Salon.com

Listening To: More iPod shuffle.  Somehow I didn't listen to much music beyond my commute to and from work.  I am liking Of Monster and Men's new song.

Book finished: You are So Undead to Me by Stacey Jay; Undead Much by Stacey Jay; The Long Weekend by Savita Kalhan; Evermore by Alyson Noel; Blue Moon by Alyson Noel; Shadowland by Alyson Noel (DNF)

Reading: Palace Circle by Rebecca Dean.  I haven't really read much historical fiction yet this year.  Since this was going into my giveaway, I thought I should read it first.

Making Lists: Trying to update my giant TBR list and spreadsheet.  I haven't done a check for a few months now.  It really needs to be updated.

Around the house:  I hate cleaning (bathroom, dishes, laundry, floors), but somehow whenever I finish I feel better.  It's a catharsis.

From the kitchen: Eating from the freezer.  It's my goal to finish the freezer before leaving on vacation.  We still have many many great meals in there.  I absolutely love this process.

On the Web: Anonymous (group of anti-establishment hackers) have called for a media buying boycott for the month of March.  J and I have joined in spirit.  I think (wink wink) that we have enough media sitting around the house that we don't need to buy anything this month.  My only problem was the release of The Hunger Games movie on March 23rd.  I'll just have to wait until after our Spring Break vacation.

Weekly Quote:  "What is a weekend?" Maggie Smith as Dowager Countess on Downton Abbey

Crafting:  Making cards for March birthdays.  Just finishing them up, no real new projects.

Work Observations:   Apparently wishing people a Merry Leap Day kinda creeps them out.  Hee hee.

Watching: Downton Abbey (season 2), Castle, 30 Rock, The Guild (season 5), Bond, and some Stargate.  We watched a lot of tv in the past week.

Wondering: The design (or lack there of) of point of sale systems at various food service places and retail stores.  Guess what J's new project is?  Now he's got me noticing all of them every where I go.

From Nature: While states east of the Mississippi experienced severe storms and tornadoes, we've had beautiful, if a bit windy, spring like weather.

Shopping Scores: I went shopping for my birthday and came away fairly disappointed.  I did find a pair of jean shorts and jeans for cheap.  And a couple of tops, but nothing too exciting.  I was really hoping to find brown pants and shoes.  Oh well... maybe next time.

Project: I spent some time getting my blog back in order (loose ends, updates).  I also got my scheduled posts for March all ready.  Now I just need to wrap up a few posts before going on vacation at the end of the month.

Picture: Completely forgot to take a fun picture...  Oh well, next week.

How I Got It: I own it

Just as Ever is learning everything she can about her new abilities as an immortal, initiated into the dark, seductive world by her beloved Damen, something terrible is happening to him.  As Ever’s powers are increasing, Damen’s are fading—stricken by a mysterious illness that threatens his memory, his identity, his life.

Desperate to save him, Ever travels to the mystical dimension of Summerland, uncovering not only the secrets of Damen’s past—the brutal, tortured history he hoped to keep hidden—but also an ancient text revealing the workings of time. With the approaching blue moon heralding her only window for travel, Ever is forced to decide between turning back the clock and saving her family from the accident that claimed them—or staying in the present and saving Damen, who grows weaker each day...

I tried to like this one, I really did.  I just couldn't really get into the storyline or the characters.  I spent most of the book wanting to smack Ever (and Damen for that matter).  There's just did not seem like a classic love story.  I ended up not caring if they lived happily ever after.  I just didn't care.  Also, I need characters to grow through a series.  To have someone keep making the same mistakes and assumptions throughout just makes me angry.  I could take or leave this one.

Immortals (DNFed series)

  1. Evermore
  2. Blue Moon
  3. Shadowland
  4. Dark Flame
  5. Night Star
  6. Everlasting

My Years Reflection 1985

It's my 30th birthday year.  As part of my celebrations, I thought I would take my birthday month to reflect on my life.  To help, I am using some of my scrapbooked pages to illustrate my life.  For each year, I've chosen a few pages to highlight that year.  I hope you enjoy my look back as much as I do.

1985:  Starting to remember bits and pieces of my life.  In general  I remember where I lived and who some of my friends were.  At 3 years old, we lived in a trailer park.  We lived there until I started Kindergarten.

Page 1:  I had my 3rd friend birthday party at Shobiz...  a precursor to Chucky Cheese.  It was awesome! Games, pizza, cake, and good friends.  And check out that birthday cake.  I was a Strawberry Shortcake fan.  I remember watching the cartoon on Saturday mornings.  I wanted to be Strawberry Shortcake.

Page 2:  That baby doll you see is Rachel Michelle.  I must have gotten her when I was one or two years old.  And I still have her.  Currently, she packed in a trunk with some other early years memorabilia.  As you can see, I took her everywhere, even sledding down hills bundled up.  Through the years, Rachel Michelle has endure a new wig and a new cloth body.  For the most part she's intact and still kicking it.

Page 3:  My maternal grandparents, Frances and Jerry moved to Jupiter, Florida.  After moving, we visited once a year until we moved to Florida (albeit the other side) when I was in fifth grade.  I have some great memories of visiting and soaking in the sun.  Everyone looks so young!

Random Reads March

Random Reads From I'm Loving Books:

Basically I have too many books on my to-read list that have been getting more and more buried every day. So I thought it would be fun to use random.org to pick a random book on my Goodreads to-read list and I would read that book NOW.

The only exceptions are if it’s a book that’s in the middle of a series you’re reading and you haven’t gotten to that book yet then you can pass and pick another random book. Or, if it’s a book you look at and realize it’s something you’re no longer interested in then you can DELETE it from your to-read list and pick another. You can also obviously skip it if it’s a coming soon book that hasn’t been released yet. I actually keep my coming soon books on a separate exclusive shelf so that’s not an issue for me here.

Want to join in on Random Reads?

It’s easy…

  1. If you’re on Goodreads enable sorting to your to-read shelf (you should see numbers next to each book now).
  2. Go to Random.org and type in the Min as 1 and the Max as how many ever books are on your to-read shelf.
  3. Scroll down to the book matching the number Random.org picks.
  4. Link up to your Random Reads post (below).
  5. Read and be merry.

So, I've decided to join this fun meme.  I thought this would be a great way to par down my TBR shelf and read some books I might not pick up right away.  I used the Goodreads sorter and Random.org to find my Random Read.

This month's winner:

#4 Bridge to Terabitha by Katherine Paterson

I bought this book a few years ago.  The idea was that I was building a library for my boys.  Their reading tastes have turned to Diary of a Wimpy Kid and Pokemon...  so the book sat there.  I've been meaning to read this myself for awhile.  But other books just got in the way.  Maybe this was the Universe's way of tell me to read it now.

1984:  Another year of no memories.  But I still love all these old pictures.  I was so adorable back then...

Page 1:  I think this is my favorite collection of pictures from my early life.  That bathing suit is a bit small, but it looks so cute of me.  And notice that I had blond slightly curly hair until I was about 3 years old.

Page 2:  I'm wearing a dress...  therefore it's Easter or Christmas.  And obviously it's Easter in these pictures.  Those are my great-grandparents celebrating with me.

Evermore by Alyson Noel

Title: Evermore (Immortals #1)

How I Got It: I own it

Since a horrible accident claimed the lives of her family, sixteen-year-old Ever can see auras, hear people’s thoughts, and know a person’s life story by touch.   Going out of her way to shield herself from human contact to suppress her abilities has branded her as a freak at her new high school—but everything changes when she meets Damen Auguste . . .

Ever sees Damen and feels an instant recognition.  He is gorgeous, exotic and wealthy, and he holds many secrets.  Damen is able to make things appear and disappear, he always seems to know what she’s thinking—and he’s the only one who can silence the noise and the random energy in her head.  She doesn’t know who he really is—or what he is.  Damen equal parts light and darkness, and he belongs to an enchanted new world where no one ever dies.

Better than I thought it would be.  Okay, it was actually good.  I still have a bit of a stigma about young adult paranormal books.  I compare everything to Twilight (which I liked, but do not obsess over).  I keep expecting sparkly vampires to pop up in these books and that's not fair.  So getting over my stigma...  I picked up the first three Immortals series from Amazon for $6 total!  I thought that I give the series a shot.  If it didn't work out, oh well.

Thankfully, I did like this books even if I wanted to smack Ever (and Damen) a few times.  The world is different.  I sense that there's more to the Immortals world, but this was more of an introduction to characters than a big exposition novel.  I liked the side characters and definitely want to see more of Miles and Haven.  I wonder about Summerland and how it figures in.  (Damen warned Ever about becoming addicted to it. hmmm.... sounds like that will happen in a later book)  Drina was villanous, but her demise seemed like a let down.  I need bigger and badder evils to stay with the series.  The love story alone won't cut it with me.  But I intend to continue the series and see where this goes.

Immortals (DNFed series)

1983: I was 1.  Obviously I still don't remember anything.

Page 1:  All these pictures were taken right around my first birthday.  I love my official 1st year portrait.  I just look really tired and confused.  What's really amazing is that I'm wearing a dress...  Throughout most of my early years I was dressed as a boy.  The only times I ever wore a dress were for Easter and Christmas.  But look!  They put me in a dress for my birthday portrait.

How I Got It: Won in a giveaway from The True Book Addict

Sam knows that he and his friend Lloyd made a colossal mistake when they accepted the ride home. They have ended up in a dark mansion in the middle of nowhere with man who means to harm them. But Sam doesn't know how to get them out. They were trapped, then separated. Now they are alone. Will either of them get out alive?  This gripping and hypnotic thriller will have you reading late into the night...

This was hands down of the scariest books I have ever read.  The fact that I am a parent made it even scarier.  I never want my children (or any children really) to ever have to go through that.

That said, the book is well-written.  We spend just a short amount of time inside Sam's life.  We see, hear, and know only what he does.  We get a thin slice of the events, but it works well.  The characters are well-developed, even the unnamed assailant.  We know much about Sam and Lloyd from their actions.  I really enjoyed Kalhan's writing, if not the subject matter.
