2012 Reading Challenge Round-Up -- Failed Edition

I hear 2013 calling my name.  I think it's time to call 2012 quits and start my end of the year posts.  In total I entered 27 reading challenges this year.  Let's see how I did...  Failed challenges edition.

This one was a seasonal challenge with interesting qualifies.  And yet I only finished 9 out of the 14 categories.

  1. Read a book chosen for the U.S. 2012 World Book Night.
  2. Read a book you were supposed to read in school, but either bailed on or Cliff-Noted.
  3. Read a memoir or narrative nonfiction book. – Paris in Love by Eloisa James
  4. Read a book in one calendar day. – The Frog Prince: A Fairy Tale for Consenting Adults by Stephen Mitchell
  5. Read a book that you’ve always wanted to read but haven’t gotten around to yet. – Murder on the Orient Express by Agatha Christie
  6. Read a pair of books that have antonyms in the titles. – Beauty by Robin McKinley and
  7. Read a book that is set in a place you’ve never been but want to visit. – The Physick Book of Deliverance Dane by Katherine Howe (Salem, Massachusetts)
  8. Find a book written the year you were born that was later made into a movie. Read the book and watch the movie; compare. Or find a movie released the year you were born that was based on a book. Do the same thing.
  9. Go into a bookstore or library. Pick any bookshelf. Read the third book from the left on the fourth shelf from the top
  10. Read a book about which you’ve heard bad things. – Something Borrowed by Emily Giffin
  11. Read a trilogy (or any three consecutive books in a series). Total page count for all three books together must be at least 500 pages. – A Great and Terrible Beauty by Libba Bray; Rebel Angels by Libba Bray; The Sweet Far Thing by Libba Bray

Music Monday -- 2012

As part of my ongoing celebration for my 30th birthday, I am highlighting some popular songs from throughout my years.  Songs were picked based off of a list of Grammy award winners and Billboard Top 100.  Then, I chose my favorites to highlight.

Music Selections: I realize that it is only September, but I've come to the end of my Music Mondays My Years posts.  So I thought I would end them with some of my favorites for this year so far.

  1. Florence + the Machine "What the Water Gave Me" -- Such a beautiful song.  This is hands down my favorite song on the album.
  2. The Black Keys "Gold on the Ceiling" -- Who doesn't love The Black Keys?  I would take them home any day.
  3. Green Day "Oh Love" -- While I wasn't that excited about 21st Century Breakdown, I am loving this song...
  4. David Guetta feat. Sia "Titanium" -- This is my summer song.
  5. The Shins "Simple Song" -- Another favorite band. I love this song way too much and James Mercer's voice is to die for...
  6. Jack White "Sixteen Saltines" -- I really must buy this album. I love everything Jack White does.
  7. Santigold "Disparate Youth" -- I'm not a huge fan of hers, but I love the music behind this one.
  8. Mumford and Sons "I Will Wait" -- I can't wait until the new album. I already pre-ordered it on iTunes.
  9. Alex Clare "Too Close" -- A relatively new find for me. Love his voice.

  2. Silverchair "Anthem for the Year 2000" -- I graduated high school in 2000.  This was my friend's and I's unofficial song.
  3. Vertical Horizon "Everything You Want" -- Obsessed with this song during the summer.
  4. Matchbox Twenty "Bent" -- I really really liked Matchbox Twenty for a while there... and I got to see them in concert this year.
  5. No Doubt "Ex Girlfriend" -- I think my favorite No Doubt song, although Tragic Kingdom is the best album.

Book: Readings on Shakespeare's The Histories

Music Selections: 

  1.  The Offspring "Americana" -- I loved The Offpsring, all the old stuff.  The new stuff just doesn't have the same fun.  I think this was their last record that liked.  And I saw them in concert either 2000 or 2001.  Great times.
  2. Goo Goo Dolls "Iris" -- One of my all time favorite songs.  I've recently caught this song on Lithium multiple times.  Can't help but stop and sing along.
  3. Matchbox Twenty "3 am" -- Another high school favorite of mine.  I hear they have a new song.  Haven't heard it yet, but I'm sure it won't compete with 3 am.
  4. Savage Garden "Truly Madly Deeply" -- A gooey love song.
  5. Barenaked Ladies "One Week" -- I still can't sing the entire song, but I love it anyway.  Plus, it was on the soundtrack for 10 Things I Hate About You, which is one of my favorite high school era movies.

  1. Third Day "Wire" -- I was obsessed with this band for awhile.  And this is my favorite song of theirs.
  2. Green Day "Holiday" -- Green Day at the height of their creativity.  Their current album just doesn't compete to American Idiot.
  3. Jason Mraz "You and I Both" -- Love this song to pieces.  I definitely don't like everything Mraz does, but this song is just lovely.

  1. Nickel Creek "This Side" -- I have a little place in my heart for Nickel Creek.  Their bluegrass, lovely lyrical music just puts me in a good mood whenever I listen.  I own all their records and solo projects.
  2. Dave Matthews Band "Grey Street" -- Another favorite band.  This is hands down my favorite song from them.
  3. No Doubt "Hey Baby" -- Long time fan of No Doubt.  Great fun song.
  4. The Calling "Wherever You Will Go" -- More of a one hit wonder, but it's still a great song.
  5. Dixie Chicks "Long Time Gone" -- The forgotten Dixie Chicks album?  But still a great one.
