Music Monday -- iPod Shuffle November

Since I've finished my 101 Faves series for Music Monday, I thought I would do something complete different.  I turned on my iPod, hit shuffle, and recorded my first 5 songs.

1. "Criminal" by Fiona Apple (Tidal)

2. "Headlights on Dark Roads" by Snow Patrol (Eyes Open)

3. "It'll Be a Long Time" by The Offspring (Smash)

4. "Catalyst" by Anna Nalick (Wreck of the Day)

5. "Emergency" by Paramore (Riot!)

Music Monday -- Favorite Covers IV

While sifting through all our music, I came across a ton of songs (over 1000) that I wanted to add to my 101 Favorite Songs list.  I had to narrow it down.  As part of my narrowing, I decide to delete all covers from the list.  But those are some great songs, ones I really love.  So, I decided to give them their own series on Music Monday.  If you like covers, stay tuned for some good ones. Part I, Part II, Part III.

Maroon 5 "Pure Imagination"

Original -- Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factory

Lemonheads "Mrs Robinson"

Original -- Simon and Garfunkel

New Found Glory "The Goonies 'R' Good Enough"

Original -- Cyndi Lauper

Save Ferris "Build Me Up Buttercup"

Original -- The Foundations

The Offspring "I Wanna Be Sedated" (And it's the awesome clip from Idle Hands.  Love that movie.  Go, go Buffalo!)

Original -- The Ramones

Music Monday -- 101 Faves 90s Edition (Part 2)

As part of my ongoing Day Zero Project, I've made a list of my favorite 101 songs of all time.  To help cut down on the possibilities, I took songs only from my iTunes account.  Each edition will include ~5 songs with a theme.  Enjoy!

Matchbox Twenty "3 am" -- One of those songs that I still know every word to...  I loved early Matchbox Twenty.  I even saw them in concert at Ball State in 2000.

No Doubt "Sunday Morning" -- While many would go to "Just a Girl" or "Spiderwebs" from Tragic Kingdom, I always go to "Sunday Morning."  For added fun, a live version.

The Offspring "The Kids Aren't Alright" -- Another band I saw in concert during college.  I love their older stuff, but this song holds a special place in my heart.  Too many of the situations in this song reminded me of people I knew in high school.  Kind of sad, but I still love it.

Hole "Celebrity Skin" -- Another concert band.  I was supposed to see them with Marilyn Manson, but they dropped out of the tour.  Thankfully they came a few months later during a Christmas concert with Orgy and two others bands.  Okay, it may not have been a Christmas concert, but it was four bands...

Music Monday -- 1998

As part of my ongoing celebration for my 30th birthday, I am highlighting some popular songs from throughout my years.  Songs were picked based off of a list of Grammy award winners and Billboard Top 100.  Then, I chose my favorites to highlight.

Year: 1998

Book: Readings on Shakespeare's The Histories

Music Selections:

  1.  The Offspring "Americana" -- I loved The Offpsring, all the old stuff.  The new stuff just doesn't have the same fun.  I think this was their last record that liked.  And I saw them in concert either 2000 or 2001.  Great times.
  2. Goo Goo Dolls "Iris" -- One of my all time favorite songs.  I've recently caught this song on Lithium multiple times.  Can't help but stop and sing along.
  3. Matchbox Twenty "3 am" -- Another high school favorite of mine.  I hear they have a new song.  Haven't heard it yet, but I'm sure it won't compete with 3 am.
  4. Savage Garden "Truly Madly Deeply" -- A gooey love song.
  5. Barenaked Ladies "One Week" -- I still can't sing the entire song, but I love it anyway.  Plus, it was on the soundtrack for 10 Things I Hate About You, which is one of my favorite high school era movies.

Music Monday -- 1999

As part of my ongoing celebration for my 30th birthday, I am highlighting some popular songs from throughout my years.  Songs were picked based off of a list of Grammy award winners and Billboard Top 100.  Then, I chose my favorites to highlight.

Year: 1999

Book: Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets by J.K. Rowling

Music Selections: Overall this year was really electic when it came to music.  I went to see Korn and Rob Zombie in concert, but I also listened to stuff like Sarah McLachlan.  I was all over the place musically!

  1. Dixie Chicks "Ready to Run" -- Most country I don't like, but for some reason I really got into the Dixie Chicks.  I still listen to them every once in a while.
  2. Lenny Kravitz "American Woman" -- I can't help but see Heather Graham as Felicity Shagwell writhing around on a car for Austin Powers: The Spy Who Shagged Me.  Hee hee!
  3. Sarah McLachlan "I Will Remember You" -- Such a great song.  I can't help but remember listening to this all the time.
  4. Santana and Rob Thomas "Smooth" -- Big hit of the summer.  The perfect summer song to sing along to.
  5. The Offspring "The Kids aren't Alright" -- Love The Offspring.  Smash was one permanent rotation in my car throughout most of the year.  And then Americana was released and I had a whole new batch of songs.  Including this amazing anthem.  There's one particular reference in here that reminds me of one of my ex-boyfriends.

Music Monday - The Offspring "Smash"

Caution: This post is rated R for language!

It's the first Monday of the month. Happy May!  I thought I would do something a little different today.  Usually I highlight an artist that I'm currently loving.  And usually they are fairly new.  Today, I would like to highlight one of my high school favorites: The Offspring.  Specifically "Smash."  Back in the late 90s, I was in high school.  To kick start our day (I took various people to and from school) I made a mix tape (yes an actual mix tape) with our favorite "get up and moving" songs.  Track #1 was The Offspring "Smash."  The title track from their 1994 album came into my life somewhere around 1997, and I instantly loved it.  The general teen angst, hard guitars, and sing-a-long lyrics.  Everything I wanted in high school.  You probably wouldn't know it from my earlier Music Monday posts, but back in high school (and really even now) I had a love of crazy rock.  I actually saw The Offspring in Indianapolis around 2000 (can't remember the exact date, but I'm pretty sure I was at Ball State).  It was definitely after the Americana album. They were so funny! Definitely didn't expect that but loved it all the same Enjoy my trip down memory lane!

Extra video: "Bad Habit" live at the Billboard Awards 1994.  Another mix tape entry.  Love how they changed the words for the broadcast.  Pretty funny if you know the actual song!  In retrospect, singing this, windows down, driving my 1998 Hyundai Accent is absolutely hilarious!

P.S. Did you know that Dexter Holland has a Master's in Molecular Biology from USC? Crazy smart!
