2013 YA/MG Fantasy Reading Challenge

From The Book Cellar:

  • Books can be any YA or MG fantasy, they do not need to be specific to 2013. I will still be doing roundups  of releases each month just to keep news up on new releases.
  • Giveaways are no longer just for reviews – they will be for all challenge participants. Reviews will be worth the most entries and each giveaway will be run bimonthly, so there will be 6 prize packs available throughout the year.

Another challenge that I was looking for.  I have some great YA/MG books that have been sitting around for awhile (and when I saw awhile, I mean years).  This is the perfect challenge to get going on those.  I am committing to 5 books to start with.  Depending on my year, I may up this to 10.  TBR List:

  1. The Mark of Athena by Rick Riordan
  2. Peter Pan by J.M. Barrie
  3. Peter and the Starcatchers by Dave Barry
  4. TBD
  5. TBD

Bout of Books Readathon Challenge: Cover Love

Now updated to include winners...

Bout of Books Read-a-Thon

Let's talk cover love today.  I've admitted in the past to being a cover snob.  I love a pretty or interesting cover.  Often it's the cover that gets me to buy the book.  I tend to be attracted to the more abstract covers, but sometimes ones featuring people grab me.

My favorite cover from this past year's reads is the His Dark Materials trilogy by Philip Pullman.  Okay, I'm cheating a bit as the covers are a set, but these are too gorgeous not to include all three.  J picked up this box set at Half Price Books sometime in 2010.  I love the colors, the raised gold lettering, and especially the constellations in the background.  These covers fit the story to a tee.

Honorable mentions:

The Magicians and The Magician King by Lev Grossman -- These two fit beautiful together.  I get a sense of Fillory in each cover.

Anna Dressed in Blood by Kendare Blake -- Look at those colors!

Sunshine by Robin McKinley -- My cover actually sparkles and somehow it doesn't seem cheesy at all.  Plus that little bit of red really calls to mind the vampires in the story.  Amazing!

Allison Hewitt is Trapped by Madeleine Roux -- Check out the zombie peeking at Allison through the book stacks. Very scary!

I also hold a place in my heart for funny or ridiculous covers.  I really love this selection.  Check them out!  Questions: Does anyone else have issues with where that pile of wood is on The Rifleman?  What is up with Retief's codpiece?  Does anyone else agree that clowns are always scary, but extra so when it looks like one is trying to pick you up?  And is that a weedwacker or are you just happy to see me?  Extra creepy...

Now I want to hear yours.  What's your favorite cover?  Or What's the funniest cover you've seen?  Tell me in a blog post (linked in my comments) or in the comments section to win.

Prizes:

  • 2  $10 Amazon or Book Depository GC -- Favorite cover and funniest cover (open internationally)
  • 2  Choice of book or series from my giveaway pile -- Random winners (open to US and Canada)

Good Luck and Happy Reading!!!!!

I had a hard time choosing, but I finally picked the winners for the Cover Challenge.  Thank you to everyone who entered.  It was awesome seeing all the beautiful/ridiculous covers.

My favorite cover was: Philip Pullman's Grimm Tales submitted by Ner.  I love the simple, yet intricate, design.  And the red hood and wolf tongue just pops!

The funniest cover was: Enchanted Again by Nancy Madore submitted by Aleksandra @ Aleksandra's Corner. Check out this ridiculousness. Who decided that flowers seeminly growing out of her butt was a good idea?

Random winners:

  • Bekka @ Pretty Deadly Reviews
  • Jennifer @ A Librarian's Library

Have Fun and Keep Reading!

Book of Lists: Looking Forward

I ran across this idea on At Random, I followed her links to Kapachino's original post. This month's topic is "Looking forward."  I decided to take that as what I am excited about this coming year.  Not what I want, but what I know is coming soon...

The picture is a bit hard to read so here are the items.

Looking Forward

  • to getting back to sunny California
  • to the beach
  • to swimming in the pool
  • to exploring more of the Bay Area
  • to finishing Stargate Universe
  • to losing a few pounds
  • to awesome food
  • to next Christmas
  • to the drive-in
  • to a lighter work load for J
  • to Spring Break
  • to possible family/friends visit to California
  • to the Farmer's Market
  • to going to concerts
  • to daily energizing walks
  • to finally watching The Walking Dead and Game of Thrones
  • to March birthday extravaganza
  • to hanging our framed art
  • to getting our scrapbooks up to date
  • to planning summer vacation
  • to reading some great books
  • to decluttering the office
  • to card class
  • to movie marathons
  • to new movies (Star Trek!  Oz!)
  • to next month's list
  • to getting a job
  • to knocking off tasks on my Day Zero Project
  • to wearing my new dragonfly necklace
  • to buying and using hiking boots
  • to new clothes

Just a few (or a lot) things I'm really looking forward to in the next year.  I've already stated on some of them (reading good books, planning summer vacation).

I again did just a page in the composition notebook with colored inks.  I'm completing this month's list back in my hometown (2000 miles away from current home), so I really don't have any supplies to decorate or embellish.  But I still like how it turned out.

Next month: We’ll be posting on February 4 and the topic is “perfect day.”

2013 Romance Reading Challenge

Hosted at The Bookworm:

1. The challenge runs from January 1st, 2013 through December 31st, 2013.

2. "Romance" isn't limited to steamy Harlequin novels. There is a huge selection of books in this category such as contemporary romance, historical romance, romantic suspense and paranormal romance to name a few. As long as the story has romantic love between the two main characters your selection will fit this challenge. The novels do not need to have a happy ending either, there can also be unrequited love.

3. Choose at least 5 novels to read. You can change your choices at any time.  Crossovers between other challenges are fine.  All kinds of books count, ebooks and audiobooks too.

4. Read your book selections at your own pace in 2012 then post the link to your review(s). You don't need to have a blog, posting your reviews on Goodreads and LibraryThing counts as well.

This year, I am hosting two giveaways for those who participate. One winner will be announced on February 14th, Valentines Day. Everyone who joins the RRC this year and has at least one book read and reviewed for the challenge will be eligible to win a gift card. Each book read and reviewed for the RRC gives you one entry. So the more books you read and review, the more times your name will go in the draw. I'll use Mr. Linky to keep track of books reviewed so make sure to link your reviews there.3. Leave me a comment on this post with your valid email addy. Let me know which gift e-card you prefer.4. I will announce the winning name at my blog on the two dates I mentioned. I really fell in love with Neil Gaiman's writing last year when I finally picked up his Sandman series.  I had read Coraline and Stardust in the past, but somehow the comic series really grabbed my attention and refused to let go. I won't be doing any review link ups or giveaways, but I'm just going to enjoy reading the books....

My TBR List:

  3. Coraline

Locke and Key Vol. 4: Keys to the Kingdom by Joe Hill and Gabriel Rodriguez

Title: Locke and Key Vol. 4: Keys to the Kingdom

Author: Joe Hill and Gabriel Rodriguez

Publisher: IDW 2011

Genre: Graphic Novel

Pages: 152

Rating:  4/5 stars

Reading Challenges: Graphic Novel; Mount TBR; Seriously Series; T4MC -- Cult Classic (20 points); Book Bingo -- 2 from series

Joe Hill and Gabriel Rodriguez's Locke & Key unwinds into its fourth volume in Keys to the Kingdom! With more keys making themselves known, and the depths of the Locke's family's mystery ever-expanding, Dodge's desperation to end his shadowy quest drives the habitants of Keyhouse evercloser to a revealing conclusion.

I had a few issues with this volume.  Overall, I am still in love with this series.  I love the illustrations.  I love the characters.  I love the general storyline.  My issues came with the pacing of the story and the style.  There are many jump cuts in this volume.  We get snippets of the action as instead of a complete follow through.  The entire first chapter, I was a bit confused by the new style.  And we get a ton of new keys with not much explanation of what they do.  I would have liked a little less stuffed into this one volume.  I like the slower pacing of the first three volumes.  Even with my issues, I still love this story and can't wait to read the conclusion.  But I'll have to until April since I don't have the next volume...  Darn!

Locke and Key:

  1. Welcome to Lovecraft
  2. Head Games
  3. Crown of Shadows
  4. Keys to the Kingdom
  5. Clockworks
  6. Alpha and Omega

2012 In Review

I saw this great survey on Erin's It's All Happening blog.  Check her out!  I would add pictures to this, but I don't really have the time or patience right now.  Next year, I promise.

1. What did you do in 2012 that you’d never done before?  I moved to California, I took a road trip to the East Coast, I stuck my feet (the only part I could stand, it's super duper cold) in the Pacific Ocean, and I rode in an ambulance (not wanting to repeat that).  Three of those things were fun, one wasn't at all.  Can you guess which is which?

2. Did you keep your New Year’s resolutions, and will you make more for next year?  I didn't make any life resolutions.  I made some blog resolutions and accomplished most of those.

3. Did anyone close to you have a child? Nope.  I have a few acquaintances that did, but I'm not that close with them.  And I rediscovered friend had a child, but we're in the process of becoming closer.

4. Did anyone close to you die? Thankfully no.

5. Where did you travel?

  • Spring Break Road Trip: Ohio (Dayton for Air Museum), Hershey PA, Philadelphia, Pittsburgh
  • Move out West: Sioux Falls SD, Mitchell SD (Corn Palace), various SD roadside attraction, Mount Rushmore, Dinosaur National Park, All points in between Omaha and Sunnyvale CA

6. What would you like to have in 2013 that you lacked in 2012?  A baby...

7. What dates from 2012 will remain etched upon your memory? Let's just go with the entirety of August.  Joy and then sadness.

8. What was your biggest achievement of the year? I survived a whole summer with the boys in a new town.  And I somehow survived moving 2000 miles.  Crazy crazy!

9. What was your biggest failure? Figuring out my career path.  I was a teacher in Indiana, lost my job there, moved to Omaha, became a receptionist, moved to California, and nothing...  I want to figure out what I want to do and commit.

10. Did you suffer illness or injury? A cold after moving to California, but not a big deal at all.  Of course, in August I suffered a miscarriage.

11. What was the best thing you bought? A Great America season pass.  The park is about 10 minutes from our house and for $60 a piece, the boys and I spent many days completely entertained.  It was a great investment!

12. Whose behavior merited celebration? I have to give it to the boys for dealing with the move and a completely new situation.  The past two years have been a bit crazy, but I hope now we've found our permanent home.

13. Whose behavior made you appalled and depressed?  Many many people during the run-up and aftermath of the election.  I don't care what side you're on, being hateful is just not acceptable.  I took that opportunity to do a serious defriending of many on Facebook.  I feel much cleaner and positive now.

14. Where did most of your money go? Spring Break road trip, the move west and the boys for summer.  Although the truck was covered by J's new company, we found many a new thing that needed to be bought after getting to CA.  Plus vacations are always costly, but we have some great memories from our trip west.

15. What did you get really, really, really excited about? Vacation and moving west.  I am really loving the west coast (much much more than I thought I would).  Turns out I love the bay area, I just am not a fan of Los Angeles.

16. What song will always remind you of 2012? Mumford and Sons (anything from Babel), Carly Rae Jepsen "Call Me Maybe", The Lumineers "Ho Hey", Grouplove "Tongue Tied", Imagine Dragons "It's Time", Gotye "Somebody that I Used to Know."  I could go on.  I really really love discovering new music.

17. Compared to this time last year, are you: a) happier or sadder? b) thinner or fatter? c) richer or poorer? Let's see.  A) Marginally happier probably.  Although I definitely had some sad moments.  B) Fatter.  That pregnancy and depression episode really helped gain the pounds.  Weight loss is one of my 2013 life goals.  C) Poorer.

18. What do you wish you’d done more of? Swam and exercised.  I have both activities at my fingertips, but somehow I just lost the will in the fall.

19. What do you wish you’d done less of?  Complaining.  I really got down and complained about a ton of things throughout the year.  2013, I want to be more positive.

20. How will you be spending Christmas? I spent Christmas in Indiana visiting with my family and old friends.  J stayed in California and I really really miss him.  Tuesday, I'm back on the West Coast.

21. Did you fall in love in 2012? After all of the life changes, fell more in love with J throughout the year.

22. What was your favorite TV program? So many great shows to choose from.  I am going to go with Doctor Who, Castle, Once Upon a Time, The West Wing (rediscovery), Stargate (SG1, Atlantis, and Universe), The League, Suits.  I could go on and on.

23. Do you hate anyone now that you didn’t hate this time last year?  I'm going to go with no on this one.  Hate is a very strong word.  I may have been upset with people from time to time, but I don't really hate anyone.

24. What was the best book you read? Here's my Top 10 list.  I narrowed down my 184 reads to 10, I can't really narrowed it down any more.

25. What was your greatest musical discovery? The Lumineers.  I absolutely adore their album.

26. What did you want and get? Books, books, and more books.  I have an addiction.

27. What did you want and not get? A baby...

28. What was your favorite film of this year? Either The Hunger Games or The Hobbit.  Two amazing movies.

29. What did you do on your birthday, and how old were you? I turned 30 in Omaha and did nothing.  Well, that's not true.  J took me out for dinner.  But I didn't have a party or anything.

30. What one thing would have made your year immeasurably more satisfying? A baby... (notice a trend here)

31. How would you describe your personal fashion concept in 2012? Comfort, but adventurous I tried to incorporate new pieces into my wardrobe, specifically more dresses and skinny jeans.  Next year, I want to incorporate more dresses into my wardrobe and experiment with layering.

32. What kept you sane? Reading.  Getting lost in a great book is my escape from all the frustrations and disappoints in the real world.  It's my refresher.

33. Which celebrity/public figure did you fancy the most?  I don't really know...

34. What political issue stirred you the most? Anything to do with women's health.  I was just disgusted with all the ideas swirling out there about "legitimate rape" and not covering preventative health care and abstinence only sex education and abortion.  Ugh!  If we want health babies, keep abortion, give sex education, promote preventative gyno visits, and support women and their support systems in all situations.

35. Who did you miss? My Indiana friends and new Omaha friends.

36. Who was the best new person you met? Collectively, I am going to go with my crafting ladies.  I now have a great group that I see regularly.  And some of those women are now great book club friends (Pam, Liese, and Angi!!!!).  I can't wait to get closer to all these amazing women.

38. Tell us a valuable life lesson you learned in 2012.   I can withstand much more than I thought before 2012, but I also realized that I need good support people.  J is amazing, much more than I give him credit for.  He was there for me during crazy vacations, moves, and major physical and mental health issues.

2012 Life Wrap-Up

January

The first month of the year was all about recovering from the holidays.  The boys spent all break with us in Omaha. Unfortunately I was still working most days, so they spent a lot of time hanging out in the house with J.  We did get a ton of board games played and books read.  After they left, it was back to the daily grind of work.

February

The second month always seemed to be a quiet one.  Not much happened.  We braced for the cold that never got too bad.  I read, watched tv, and of course, worked.

March

Things got very interesting in March.  It was my, the boys', and J's birthdays.  I turned 30!  Not as weird as I thought it would be.  I still feel like I'm 25 (which is probably a good  thing).  Plus, I am really looking forward to this decade.  It has to be better than my 20s.  To celebrate, I posted pics and stories from all of my thirty years each day of the month.  Check out the beginning of the My Years posts.  Beyond birthdays, J was offered a job for a company in Silicon Valley.  We always figured that we would move out west at some point, but this was very unexpected.  After a few phone interviews, we flew out for a weekend to do a final interview and look at living situations.  I spent the weekend driving around the San Jose area.  I even popped into a great little Egyptian Museum.  And J and I visited Sonoma Valley for a great wine afternoon.  Back in Omaha, we discussed the situation and decided that moving was our best opportunity.  He said yes, they worked out moving packages, and we planned on moving at the end of April!

April

Before all the moving stuff came up, J and I planned a Spring Break road trip with the boys.  We drove to Indiana to pick them up and then headed east to Ohio and Pennsylvania.  All in all it was a great trip.  I love old fashioned road trips.  Plus I got to visit some cities that I've never been to (hello Pittsburgh and Philadelphia!).  And I got to visit one of my Top 10 American Attractions... Fallingwater!  I made my mom really jealous with that!  After getting back, J flew out to California to start his job and secure housing.  He came back to Nebraska and a week later we packed up the truck and traversed the western half of the country to our new home.

May

May was all about settling in and getting to know my new town.  First things first, I located and obtained a library card.  Always a priority for me!  Plus, I found a coffeehouse, supermarket, park, DMV (CA driver's license), movie theater, and many many favorite nearby restaurants.  I also trolled Meetup and found a great card making group.  I really love some of those ladies.  On the blog, I topped the month off with a bit of a political rant with "I am a Citizen."

June

The boys traveled out to the coast to spend the summer with us.  We started a great two months of adventures and exploration.  Our activities were documented in my Sunnyvale Summer posts.

July

July was full of tons of adventures with the boys including the beach, the amusement park, summer camps, pool days, library visits, and trips to San Francisco.  I also confirmed my suspicions that I was pregnant.  Very happy news.

August

The boys returned the first week of August to Indiana for school.  I am so grateful that they love their school and teachers.  It makes the situation a bit easier to handle.  Unfortunately the heartache continued with my mid-month miscarriage.  More information about my experience can be found here.

September

September was a month of healing and restarts.  I had to deal with aftermath of my miscarriage.  My hormones made me absolutely crazy for a few weeks.  I also decided to finally make an appointment with a therapist to discuss the event and my past and current depression woes.  It didn't help that we had multiple apartment issues: fridge quitting randomly, dishwasher not really cleaning, and a dripping ceiling.  And J was super busy at work.  I hardly saw him.

On a brighter note, I accomplished a ton of crafting.  I really jumped in with both feet.  The end result found a home in my mother's flower shop in November.  I also got a jump on Christmas projects.  Obviously I can't tell you what they are, but they were greatly appreciated.

October

Some of the ladies I craft with decided to start a very informal book club and asked me to join.  We had our first meeting!  Such fun.  With the holidays we had our second meeting in December.  But hopefully this will become more of a monthly occurrences.  I also reconnected with an old high school friend who is now living in San Francisco.  I met her husband and adorable baby boy.  We had a few fun lunch/shopping dates.  I'm sure we'll continue these after the new year.

November

Starting slow, things got crazy when I flew back to Indiana to spend almost two weeks with the boys and family.  We had tons of fun and ate some great food for Thanksgiving.  I really needed that visit to reconnect with old friends and break out of my day to day routine.  I came back to California refreshed.

December

Just like November, it started slow, and then I traveled back to Indiana for the holidays.  Check back in few days for some vacation highlights.

Locke and Key Vol. 3: Crown of Shadows by Joe Hill and Gabriel Rodriguez

Title: Locke and Key Vol. 3: Crown of Shadows

Author: Joe Hill and Gabriel Rodriguez

Publisher: IDW 2010

Genre: Graphic Novel

Pages: 152

Rating:  5/5 stars

Reading Challenges: Graphic Novels; Mount TBR; Seriously Series; T4MC -- Christmas Present (20 points); Book Bingo -- 2 from series

The dead plot against the living, the darkness closes in on Keyhouse, and a woman is shattered beyond repair, in the third storyline of the Eisner-nominated series. Dodge continues his relentless quest to find the key to the black door, and raises an army of shadows to wipe out anyone who might get in his way. Surrounded and outnumbered, the Locke children find themselves fighting a desperate battle, all alone, in a world where the night itself has become their enemy.

Intrigue, mystery, and suspense.  Oh my!  The storyline just keeps getting darker and darker as this series goes on.  I am in awe of how good this series is.  I imagined a flaky plot with flaky characters.  Thankfully I was mistaken.  I love Hill's penchant for complex, but realistic characters.  Even Dodge is realistic as a malevolent being possibly a puppet for another more malevolent entity.  I loved the introduction of Scott and Jamal in this volume.  They filled out the story even more.  I can't wait to read Volume 4!

Locke and Key:

  1. Welcome to Lovecraft
  2. Head Games
  3. Crown of Shadows
  4. Keys to the Kingdom
  5. Clockworks
  6. Alpha and Omega

2013 Telling Tales Reading Challenge

From An Armchair by the Sea:

Here are the rules:
  • The challenge runs from January 1st, 2013 to December 31st, 2013. You can sign up at any point throughout the year.
  • Again, any genre counts as long as it is in some way related to fairytale and/or mythology. Once again, if you are unsure, as long as you can make an argument for its' inclusion, it counts!
  • Re-reads count, and you are more than welcome to overlap books with other challenges.
  • Please leave me your email address in the comments if you want to participate (I promise not to harrass you, it's just so that people get a reminder every now and again about the monthly link ups, and also so I can contact you for competitions etc).
  • Please link up your reviews every month in the posts which will go up on this blog.
  • In your sign up post, please indicate the level you aim to complete. You are entirely welcome to change this as the year progresses. You can make your lists beforehand, or as you go. Whichever you prefer!
  • When you sign up, please leave the link to your sign up post, rather than just to your blog in general.
  • You don't have to have a blog to participate - you can review on Goodreads, Amazon, wherever, just let me know where you will be reviewing!
The levels are as follows:
Pixie - read 2 books
Troll under the Bridge - read 5 books
Princess - read 10 books
Prince Charming - read 15 books
Evil Queen - read 20 books
Dragon - read 30 books
King/Queen of the Silver Screen - read any number of books and watch the film adaptations.

As last year was a struggle, I'm going for the Troll Under the Bridge level of 5 books.  Here's my TBR list:

2013 Blog Resolutions

I have very specific goals for 2013.

1. Read over 60,000 pages -- This past year I read over 60,000 pages.  I would like to continue that trend.  Of course, this is a related, but not a direct effect of how many books I read.  I have the ultimate goal of 1,000,000 pages read.  I'm on my way.

2. Get rid of at least one box of books -- There are ten boxes of books in the closet right now.  I really want to get rid of these, but I feel ridiculous about getting rid of books that I haven't read yet.  So I am focusing on reading my own books.

3. Finish any series started -- For this goal, I've actually signed up for a series finishing reading challenge this year.

4. Finish 75% or more of the reading challenges I join -- A reasonable goal I think.

5. Read more on the iPad -- I want to transition from physical books to digital ones.  But first I need to complete goal #2.

6. Be stricter about DNFs -- I have gotten better about be discriminating when it comes to books.  If I don't find myself fully into the book by page 50, I reevaluate whether or not I want to finish.

7. Read the book before seeing the movie -- I have multiple books I want to read before watching the movie.  This is a big goal.

8. Do at least six readathons -- I did 11 last year, I think I can commit to at least 6 for the coming year.  In fact, I have my first one this next week with Bout of Books 6.0.

9. Focus on my perpetual lists -- I am attempting to integrate these into my TBR list for 2013.  We'll see how this goes.

10. Limit by book buying -- I signed up for the Double Dog Dare Challenge for January through April.  I hope to continue my book buying ban, excluding book club choices, through June.  I just have too many books in my possession to buy more.

Revisiting the 2012 resolutions:

  1. Be better at planning for my reading -- I did this fairly well, but there's always room for improvement.
  2. Participate in at least one readathon per quarter -- Done, done, and done!
  3. Be better at chronicling my crafting -- I would like to do more, but I did get better.
  4. Put more family updates -- So-so
  5. Reinstitute Quote Wednesdays -- Done
  6. Branch out into some new music for Music Mondays -- Done
  7. Not commit myself to every meme I find interesting -- I got much better at selecting these
  8. Share more interesting links, blogs posts, articles, etc. -- So-so
  9. Clean out my Goggle Reader -- I got better at this...
  10. Post at least once a week on another blogger's site -- Failed miserably
  11. Get moving on my Day Zero Project -- Movement, but I would have liked more
  12. Possibly include movie reviews? -- Not really

Publisher: IDW 2010

Genre: Graphic Novel

Pages: 162

Rating:  5/5 stars

Reading Challenges: Graphic Novel; Mount TBR; Seriously Series; Book Bingo -- 3 from TBR; T4MC -- New Author (5 points)

Following a shocking death that dredges up memories of their father's murder, Kinsey and Tyler Locke are thrown into choppy emotional waters, and turn to their new friend, Zack Wells, for support, little suspecting Zack's dark secret. Meanwhile, six-year-old Bode Locke tries to puzzle out the secret of the head key, and Uncle Duncan is jarred into the past by a disturbingly familiar face. Open your mind - the head games are just getting started!

Another stunning volume.  I am really into this series now.  I love the colors, the drawings, the characters, and above all the storyline.  This volume deepened the mystery surround the house and the creature from the well.  Plus we get the appearance of another mysterious key.  At the very end, we get a page from an old journal detailing the known keys.  I can't wait to see the others in action.

Locke and Key:

  1. Welcome to Lovecraft
  2. Head Games
  3. Crown of Shadows
  4. Keys to the Kingdom
  5. Clockworks
  6. Alpha and Omega

Locke and Key Vol. 1: Welcome to Lovecraft by Joe Hill and Gabriel Rodriguez

Title: Locke and Key Vol. 1: Welcome to Lovecraft

Author: Joe Hill and Gabriel Rodriguez

Publisher: IDW 2009

Genre: Graphic Novel

Pages: 168

Rating: 5/5 stars

Reading Challenges: Graphic Novel; New Authors; Mount TBR; Seriously Series; Book Bingo -- 3 from TBR

Locke & Key tells of Keyhouse, an unlikely New England mansion, with fantastic doors that transform all who dare to walk through them, and home to a hate-filled and relentless creature that will not rest until it forces open the most terrible door of them all! Acclaimed suspense novelist and New York Times best-selling author Joe Hill (Heart-Shaped Box) creates an all-new story of dark fantasy and wonder, with astounding artwork from Gabriel Rodriguez.

I grabbed this volume because it has appeared on many other book bloggers' lists.  And I was definitely not disappointed.  This story starts off with a bang and doesn't stop.  We follow a damaged family through their pain and eventual opening of new horrors.  I loved the style of writing.  Hill conveys such emotion through short dialogue bubbles.  The story itself is intense and horrifying.  I sped through the volume on pins and needles.  And was left wanting more... Thank goodness I have Volumes 2-4 just waiting to be read.
