Life Right Now #40

As I look outside my window: Clear and bright, but very windy this morning…

Right now I am: Enjoying some of my cranberry sauce on toast. I didn’t eat enough of it on Thanksgiving.

On my bedside table: Lola and the Boy Next Door by Stephanie Perkins; North American Lake Monsters by Nathan Ballingrud

On my tv this week: We started watching Lovecraft Country and it is delightful. I’m so excited about this series!

Listening to: J had me listen to a fascinating 99 PI episode about the New York Public Library and Anne Carroll Moore.

On the menu for this week:

  • Monday - Firecracker Chicken

  • Tuesday - Garlic Shrimp Pasta

  • Wednesday - French Onion Soup

  • Thursday - Leftovers

  • Friday - Singapore Laksa Soup

  • Saturday - Italian Beef Sandwiches

  • Sunday - Cambodian Pineapple Soup

On my to do list: Today I need to finish sorting curriculum for December, printing curriculum for December, wrapping the December books, and organizing the advent calendar. I should also update my planner and pull my books for December.

Happening this week: We’re back to normal this week, thank goodness. Beyond homeschooling, we aren’t planning on leaving the house except to go to the library.

What I am creating: I’m putting the finishing touches on the advent calendar and working on Christmas cards this weekend.

My simple pleasures: Cranberry sauce! Greek pasta salad, Christmas music, a great book to sink into.

Looking around the house: We need to do a big pickup this afternoon, especially the boys. Their toys have migrated out of the playroom.

From the camera: A tower of appetizers from Thanksgiving. Oh so good!

Gotham Academy Vol. 1-3

gotham 1.jpg

Title: Gotham Academy Vol. 1: Welcome to Gotham Academy

Author: Becky Cloonan, Brenden Fletcher, Karl Kerschl

Publisher: DC 2015

Genre: Graphic Novel

Pages: 160

Rating: 5/5 stars

Reading Challenges:

Welcome to Gotham Academy, the most prestigious school in Gotham City. Only the best and brightest students may enter its halls, study in its classrooms, explore its secret passages, summon its terrifying spirits…

Okay, so Gotham Academy isn’t like other schools. But Olive Silverlock isn’t like other students. After a mysterious incident over summer break, she’s back at school with a bad case of amnesia, an even worse attitude… and an unexplained fear of bats.

Olive’s supposed to show new student Maps Mizoguchi the ropes. Problem: Maps is kid sister of Kyle, Olive’s ex. Then there’s the ghost haunting the campus…the secret society conducting bizarre rituals…and Bruce Wayne, the weirdo billionaire who funds the Academy - and may know the secret to Olive’s big mystery.

Find out in GOTHAM ACADEMY VOL. 1, the acclaimed new series from co-writers Becky Cloonan (DEMO) and Brendan Fletcher (BATGIRL) and artist Karl Kerschl (TEEN TITANS: YEAR ONE)! Collects GOTHAM ACADEMY #1-6.

I’ve never read much of the DC Universe, but I picked up this series because there is a crossover with Lumberjanes. I loved the mix of Nancy Drew-esque mystery solving and actual supernatural events. I want to know more about Olive and Tristan and the various teachers. There are definitely mysteries in abundance at Gotham Academy. I am completely on board for the ride.

Title: Gotham Academy Vol. 2: Calamity

Author: Becky Cloonan, Brenden Fletcher, Karl Kerschl, Mingjue Helen Chen

Publisher: DC 2016

Genre: Graphic Novel

Pages: 144

Rating: 4/5 stars

Reading Challenges:

Gotham Academy is haunted!

At the beginning of the term, Olive Silverlock returned to Gotham Academy a shadow of her former self. But thanks to her new friendships and their Detective Club sleuthing, Olive was finally starting to feel whole again.

Then, abruptly, Olive’s mother died—or, she seemed to. In the weeks after the funeral, Olive begins seeing her mother around the school. An Arkham Asylum patient with a deadly dark side, Sybil Silverlock was a powerful and complicated woman. Could her spirit be reaching out from beyond the grave? And if so, is it motherly Sybil who haunts Olive—or her deadly alter ego Calamity?

Plus, the kids hunt a werewolf on campus and Maps teams up with the Academy’s newest transfer, Damian Wayne!

Writers Becky Cloonan and Brenden Fletcher team with artists Karl Kerschl and Mingjue Helen Chen for GOTHAM ACADEMY VOL. 2: CALAMITY. Collects GOTHAM ACADEMY #7-12 and DC SNEAK PEEK: GOTHAM ACADEMY #1.

I still really enjoyed this volume of stories, although it wasn’t quite as interesting as the first one. The mysteries continue to deepen, but we don’t get many answers to all our questions. I do love the addition of Damian Wayne. Wonder where that’s story is going to go?

Title: Gotham Academy Vol. 3: Yearbook

Author: Brenden Fletcher, Derek Fridolfs, Dustin Nguyen, Rafael Albuquerque

Publisher: DC 2016

Genre: Graphic Novel

Pages: 176

Rating: 4/5 stars

Reading Challenges:

"Another turning point, a fork stuck in the road. Life grabs you by the wrist..." and hands you this year's Gotham Academy yearbook!

The students of Gotham's most prestigious prep school are back and they've just survived one heck of a year within the walls of Gotham Academy. Now it's time for everyone to look back and experience some of the lost adventures from the school year that was. Featuring stories and art by some of comics' best and brightest creators including Dustin Nguyen (BATMAN: L'IL GOTHAM), Derek Fridolfs (BATMAN: L'IL GOTHAM) and Rafael Albuquerque (AMERICAN VAMPIRE), as well as from regular series writer Brenden Fletcher (BATGIRL)!

Collects GOTHAM ACADEMY #13-17.

This was more of a compilation of vignettes than a big story arc. I did love the glimpses into the Robins and the larger problems with Batman.

Lumberjanes Volumes

Title: Lumberjanes The Shape of Friendship

Author: Lilah Sturges, Shannon Watters, Brooklyn Allen, Noelle Stevenson, Grace Ellis, polterink

Publisher: BOOM! 2019

Genre: Graphic Novel

Pages: 144

Rating: 4/5 stars

Reading Challenges:

While adventuring in the woods, Jo, Mal, Molly, April, and Ripley discover the hiding place of a group of magical creatures called Pookas and they think they’ve found new friends. But what they don’t know is that the Pookas are tired of hiding, and they’ve found the perfect way to join the outside world…by impersonating the Lumberjanes themselves and taking over Camp! To reclaim their identities, the ’Janes will have to work together to remember who they really are…and to help another group of friends accept themselves, too, in a story about looking inside yourself and learning to love who you meet there.

I didn’t quite realize that this was part of the first trade as a standalone volume. It was nice to revisit the ladies of Roanoke cabin and their first adventures into the woods.

Title: Lumberjanes The Infernal Compass

Author: Lilah Sturges, Shannon Watters, Brooklyn Allen, Noelle Stevenson, Grace Ellis, polterink

Publisher: BOOM! 2018

Genre: Graphic Novel

Pages: 144

Rating: 4/5 stars

Reading Challenges:

The first original graphic novel set in the award winning and critically acclaimed Lumberjanes world!

When the Janes start to become separated during an orienteering outing thanks to a mysterious compass, Molly becomes more and more insecure about the effect of her relationship with Mal on the other girls. Meanwhile, a lonely woman explorer is trying to steal the compass, with the help of some weirdly polite automaton butlers.

Such a fun story! I loved this fun adventure. Mal and Molly are such a perfect fun couple.

Lovecraft Country by Matt Ruff

lovecraft.jpg

Title: Lovecraft Country

Author: Matt Ruff

Publisher: Harper Perennial 2017

Genre: Horror

Pages: 400

Rating: 5/5 stars

Reading Challenges:

The critically acclaimed cult novelist makes visceral the terrors of life in Jim Crow America and its lingering effects in this brilliant and wondrous work of the imagination that melds historical fiction, pulp noir, and Lovecraftian horror and fantasy.

Chicago, 1954. When his father Montrose goes missing, 22-year-old Army veteran Atticus Turner embarks on a road trip to New England to find him, accompanied by his Uncle George—publisher of The Safe Negro Travel Guide—and his childhood friend Letitia. On their journey to the manor of Mr. Braithwhite—heir to the estate that owned one of Atticus’s ancestors—they encounter both mundane terrors of white America and malevolent spirits that seem straight out of the weird tales George devours.

At the manor, Atticus discovers his father in chains, held prisoner by a secret cabal named the Order of the Ancient Dawn—led by Samuel Braithwhite and his son Caleb—which has gathered to orchestrate a ritual that shockingly centers on Atticus. And his one hope of salvation may be the seed of his—and the whole Turner clan’s—destruction.

This was the horror journey that I needed this month. Right away we get glimpses into a life and world that isn’t going to be normal. I loved that we jump right into the story while also getting to the know the characters. I was slightly unprepared for the changes in narrators after the first section, but quickly got into the groove and loved the change. It was nice to see every character’s story and interactions with the larger storyline. I think my favorite story was focused on Hipppolyta. Loved her adventure! I was sad to see the madness stop, but loved the ending so much. Just perfect!

Color Me In by Natasha Diaz

511KvYwOFmL._SX331_BO1,204,203,200_.jpg

Title: Color Me In

Author: Natasha Diaz

Publisher: Ember 2020

Genre: YA Fiction

Pages: 384

Rating: 3/5 stars

Reading Challenges: Monthly Theme - October

Growing up in an affluent suburb of New York City, sixteen-year-old Nevaeh Levitz never thought much about her biracial roots. When her Black mom and Jewish dad split up, she relocates to her mom's family home in Harlem and is forced to confront her identity for the first time.

Nevaeh wants to get to know her extended family, but because she inadvertently passes as white, her cousin thinks she's too privileged, pampered, and selfish to relate to the injustices African Americans face on a daily basis. In the meantime, Nevaeh's dad decides that she should have a belated bat mitzvah instead of a sweet sixteen, which guarantees social humiliation at her posh private school. But rather than take a stand, Nevaeh does what she's always done when life gets complicated: she stays silent.

Only when Nevaeh stumbles upon a secret from her mom's past, finds herself falling in love, and sees firsthand the prejudice her family faces does she begin to realize she has her own voice. And choices. Will she continue to let circumstances dictate her path? Or will she decide once for all who and where she is meant to be?

I was very underwhelmed by this book. I loved the premise and was hoping for another The Poet X or Clap When You Land. Instead, we get a book with virtually no plot with underdeveloped characters and bad poetry. I wasn’t a fan of how other women were portrayed (very stereotypical villain types). I hated the father and mostly the mother. The ways in which Nevaeh oppresses others while whining about being oppressed really got to me. Overall, this was a very immature debut novel. Lots of interesting topics but not well executed.

Reading: Lovecraft Country by Matt Ruff - Oh so good! But very hard to explain.

Watching: We started the second season of His Dark Materials and it is just amazing.

Listening: Loving all the episodes of Lore. I like to play the game of guessing what he is going to talk about based on the first five minutes.

Making: I finally, finally, finally started making Christmas cards! I made 18 cards in the past three days.

Feeling: I had to go grocery shopping and it started sleeting while I was in there. Very chilly day yesterday…

Planning: I’m working on getting all the Thanksgiving components scheduled out. It’s going to be a little bit harder to make everything without two ovens.

Loving: I need apple cider in my everyday life…

Homeschool W15: We're Really into Weather This Week!

IMG_5625.jpeg

What We Studied

We continued our study of weather and finished our reading of The Lion, The Witch, and the Wardrobe. We also slowed down a bit and let some thing go. And I spent some time planning our our second semester.

Literature and Poetry

We finished reading The Lion, The Witch, and The Wardrobe by C.S. Lewis. I was super excited to finish my re-reading of this volume. On Saturday night, we watched the newer movie version. Arthur loved it, but was scared at a few parts. He’s very sensitive about movies and television shows right now. On Friday, we did a literature study of Cloudy with a Chance of Meatballs in connection with our weather unit. Arthur loved comparing the book to the movie version.

  • The Lion, The Witch, and The Wardrobe by C.S. Lewis

  • Cloudy with a Chance of Meatballs by Judi Barrett

  • Pickles to Pittsburgh by Judi Barrett

  • Planet of the Pies by Judi Barrett

Math

Another big review week for math. We played some math games, did some Khan Academy, and did some review sheets.

  • Mummy Math by Cindy Neuschwander

  • Math Potatoes by Greg Tang

IMG_5651.jpeg

Social Studies

We did a mini study of the Native groups of the Southeast with focus on the Cherokee and the Seminole. We also finished watching the PBS documentary Native America. It was such a great series. I was sad that we reached the end. We also did a mini study on the continent of Europe.

  • Doing a math review week was definitely a good choice.

Lows

  • I’m missing our history lessons.

Next Week

We are having an off-week in terms of scheduling and planning. I have a few small packets made up to do some math and language arts review. I also have some leftover Thanksgiving themed activities to do each day. So a bit of an informal week for Thanksgiving.

Life Right Now #39

As I look outside my window: Clear skies today, much better than the gray skies yesterday. Although it’s only supposed to get up to 50 degrees today. I’ll take it.

Right now I am: Finishing up the grocery list. We’re having just our household Thanksgiving and decided to do all appetizers. Lots of things to make, but the food will last us Thursday and Friday.

Thinking and pondering: Wondering if the twins will ever respond to my questions about next semester…

On my bedside table: Lumberjanes Volumes; The Invisible Life of Addie LaRue by V.E. Schwab

On my tv this week: We caught up on our currently airing shows like The Mandolorian and His Dark Materials. We also watched a few more episodes of Happy.

Listening to: Binging on some good bookish podcasts.

On the menu for this week: Potentially four soups and stews from around the world this week! Getting closer to 52 for the year.

  • Monday - Irish Scallop Bisque

  • Tuesday - French Onion Soup

  • Wednesday - Leftovers or Singapore Laksa Soup

  • Thursday - Thanksgiving!!!!

  • Friday - Leftovers

  • Saturday - Baked Firecracker Chicken

  • Sunday - Russian Mushroom and Potato Soup

On my to do list: Lots of organizing and prepping for December. I need to finish doing the boys’s advent calendar and 24 book plan. I need to get the pantry in order.

Happening this week: Other than food, nothing much.

What I am creating: Hoping to make some Christmas cards today! I’m been trying to get in there for a month now. I really need some quiet crafting time.

My simple pleasures: Hazelnut coffee, Quentin snuggles, interesting picture books

Looking around the house: J went out yesterday and picked up a new vacuum! Our old one has been dying for awhile now (almost 20 years old and moved across country twice). He bought a Shark on Black Friday sale. I’m going to test it out today.

From the camera: Dovi (peanut stew) from Zimbabwe was so good! Definitely making this one again.

Flight Vol. 1

flight.jpg

Title: Flight Vol. 1

Author: Kazu Kibuishi

Publisher: Villard 2007

Genre: Graphic Novel

Pages: 208

Rating: 4/5 stars

Reading Challenges:

Originally published by Image Comics in 2004, Flight, Volume One launched this graphic novel series with a resounding bang. Since then the Flight series has steadily increased in popularity–and now all of the Flight backlist will be coming to Villard!

Flight, Volume One received a great boost when graphic novel hero Scott McCloud praised the quality and artistry of the book in an afterward entitled THE YEAR COMICS TOOK FLIGHT. Little could readers know at the time how prophetic McCloud’s words would prove to be.

Random library find. I enjoyed this collection of stories all dealing with the concept of flight. The variety of styles and art was delightful. I read this in an enjoyable afternoon and am looking forward to reading volume two.

Odds and Ends

Odds and Ends.png

Here's my randomness for the week:

  • I picked up almost 90 books from the library this week… This puts our checked-out total at around 270. Wow!

  • I’m. so rooting for Brendan on The Bachelorette! He’s bringing me the dork energy and I’m so into it!

  • I dumped a book this week and picked up Lovecraft Country. A much better choice!

  • I shattered a Ball jar this week and it was terrible. I hate losing my precious babies.

Publisher: Tordotcom 2020

Genre: Fantasy

Pages: 208

Rating: 5/5 stars

Reading Challenges:

Avery is an exceptional child. Everything he does is precise, from the way he washes his face in the morning, to the way he completes his homework – without complaint, without fuss, without prompt.

Zib is also an exceptional child, because all children are, in their own way. But where everything Avery does and is can be measured, nothing Zib does can possibly be predicted, except for the fact that she can always be relied upon to be unpredictable.

They live on the same street.
They live in different worlds.

On an unplanned detour from home to school one morning, Avery and Zib find themselves climbing over a stone wall into the Up and Under – an impossible land filled with mystery, adventure and the strangest creatures.

And they must find themselves and each other if they are to also find their way out and back to their own lives.

Oh goodness… This is definitely going onto my year-end Top 10 Reads! A new fun and twisty book from Seanan McGuire was just what I needed this week! Right away I got Alice in Wonderland and Wizard of Oz vibes from this tale of two opposite children transported to a very improbable world. And those feelings kept getting stronger as the story progressed. I loved following Avery and Zib (hello A to Z!) as they attempt to escape the Up and Under, but ultimately find themselves and each other along the way. This is for fans of twisty fairy tales and nonsense worlds. I imagine that I will be pushing this book onto all my friends for the rest of the year.

The Troop by Nick Cutter

troop.jpg

Title: The Troop

Author: Nick Cutter

Publisher: Gallery Books 2016

Genre: Horror

Pages: 384

Rating: 4/5 stars

Reading Challenges: Perpetual - NPR Horror

Once every year, Scoutmaster Tim Riggs leads a troop of boys into the Canadian wilderness for a weekend camping trip—a tradition as comforting and reliable as a good ghost story around a roaring bonfire. But when an unexpected intruder stumbles upon their campsite—shockingly thin, disturbingly pale, and voraciously hungry—Tim and the boys are exposed to something far more frightening than any tale of terror. The human carrier of a bioengineered nightmare. A horror that spreads faster than fear. A harrowing struggle for survival with no escape from the elements, the infected…or one another.

This was a recommendation from one of my favorite podcasts: Currently Reading. And it is not for the feint of heart. This is hardcore body horror (but not in the trippy way like Mexican Gothic). This one is very gorey and made me say “ew” out loud many times. We get a mix of contagion horror with Lord of the Flies focused on five boys and one adult on an isolated island. From there, I basically knew how the story was going to devolve, but was all in for the ride. My biggest complaint was the fact that they allude to the ending about 75 pages from the ending. I would have rather have been surprised by the ending than guess based off of the clues. And i did have a few qualms about the back stories of the boys, especially Shelly. I was not really into adding a character like him into the story.

Homeschool W14: Not Many Pictures... Lots of Weather Talk

IMG_5568.jpeg

What We Studied

Literature and Poetry

We started The Lion, the Witch, and the Wardrobe this week. I’ve read this one, but it’s been years. Lots of things make so much more sense after reading The Magician’s Nephew the past two weeks. Arthur is looking forward to watching one of the movie versions after we finish reading. For language arts, he had his first big sight word test. 17/20 (and one he switched his b and d). Decent showing. We’ll be doing another test right before Christmas.

  • The Lion, The Witch, and the Wardrobe by C.S. Lewis

Math

We had another week of review and math games. Arthur completed a few levels of Khan Academy and did some logic puzzles. I’ve decided that we aren’t going to start Singapore 2A until January. In the between time, we are going to keep doing review packets, finish our Khan Academy class, and start a coding unit.

IMG_5580.jpeg

Social Studies

We covered a few U.S. History lessons from A River of Voices (Blossom and Root). We talked about the formation of the English colonies and life in the early colonies. I found a great American Experience episode about the Pilgrims that we watched over the course of a few days (it was 2 hours long!). I even learned a few little tidbits from the documentary. We also talked about the arrival of slaves in the colonies. We didn’t go into too much depth, but I did want to introduce the topic and it’s lasting impact on life in this country. This will come up again in a few lessons. As a conclusion to the week I found a great 7 part series for kids about the legacy of Jamestown from 2019 Commemoration event. The series, called Guardians of Jamestown, features a young girl traveling back in time to learning about various artifacts from Jamestown. It was engaging and informative. Extra bonus, each episode is only about 5-7 minutes long. We watched it straight through on Tuesday before lunch.

  • The European Settlement in North America 1492-1763

  • A Timeline History of the Thirteen Colonies by Mary K. Pratt

  • Recipes of the Thirteen Colonies by Joyce Jeffries

  • Slavery and Slave Trade by Richard Spilsbury

Science

Part of our unit theme.

Art

We just have a few free drawing periods this week. Next week I’m hoping to finish our fine artist study with Vermeer and Seurat.

IMG_5577.jpeg

Music

Our composer was Frederic Chopin. I love his music. Arthur was less sold on him.

Unit Theme

Our theme this week was weather. Arthur really got into learning all about the weather. We started a month long weather study along with lots of interesting little videos. He really liked learning about the different types of clouds.

  • DK Weather

  • Boy, Were We Wrong About the Weather! by Kathleen V. Kudlinski

  • How Does the Sun Make the Weather? by Judith Williams

  • Wild About Weather by Ed Brotak

  • National Geographic Kids Everything Weather

  • What Will the Weather Be/ by Lynda Dewitt

  • Watersong by Tim McCanna

  • Sun by Sam Usher

  • Forecasting Fun compiled by Terry Pierce

  • Weather Clouds by Ann Herriges

  • Cloud or Fog by Kelly Doudna

  • Hail or Freezing Rain by Josh Platner

  • Kate, Who Tamed the Wind by Liz Garton Scanlon and Lee White

  • The Fog by Kyo Maclear

  • Singing in the Rain by Arthur Freed and Nacio Herb Brown

IMG_5586.jpeg

Misc. - Random picture books read

  • A Pandemonium of Parrots

  • Baby Cakes by Theo Heras

  • Is It Sukkot Yet? by Chris Brash

  • Hocus Pocus, It’s Fall! by Anne Sibley O’Brien

  • The Legend of King Arthur-a-tops by Mo O’Hara

  • Shimmer and Shine: Save the Rainbow

  • Do Not Lick This Book by Idan Ben-Baral and Julian Frost

  • Lego City: Look Out Below

  • Cooking with the Grinch by Tish Rabe

  • Thomas the Tank Engine: Stop, Train, Stop!

  • Cat Traps by Molly Coxe

  • Katie and the Sunflowers by James Mayhew

  • Dance Like a Leaf by AJ Irving

  • Gus, the Pilgrim Turkey by Ellen Joy Sasaki

  • How the Dinosaur Got to the Museum by Jessie Hartland

IMG_5589.jpeg

Highs

Arthur really got into learning about and recording the weather. I also love when he really gets into a topic.

Lows

I felt very rushed this week and didn’t get as much done as I had hoped. Maybe next week things will be a bit more easy-going.

Next Week

We are continuing our weather unit into this coming week. We’ll also be finishing The Lion, the Witch, and the Wardrobe and our National Parks / John Muir study. Our theme will be thankfulness with lots of Thanksgiving themed puzzles, pages, and readings. For social studies, we are going to cover the Native Americans of the Southeast, and then shift gears on Thursday to our continent study of Europe and on to the Minoans and Mycenaeans. We’ll be staying in ancient Greece until Christmas.

Life Right Now #38

As I look outside my window: Windy and cold day, but bright and sunny.

Right now I am: Updating my giant to-do list. Lots of little things I need to knock out this week.

Thinking and pondering: What is our Thanksgiving going to look like? I think we are just going to do our household and make it an appetizer day instead of turkey, etc. J doesn’t really like turkey, and we love appetizers but they are a lot of work. SO maybe an appetizer buffet and movie marathon with the kids.

On my bedside table: The Troop by Nick Cutter; The Warmth of Other Suns by Isabel Wilkerson

On my tv this week: We finally finished Battlestar Galactica and it was such a disappointment. J did warn me, but I was still disappointed.

Listening to: Black Veil Brides dropped a new song, loving it!

On the menu for this week:

  • Monday - Green Chile Pepper Jack Enchiladas

  • Tuesday - Icelandic Lamb Soup

  • Wednesday - Zimbabwean Peanut Stew

  • Thursday - Mongolian Beef

  • Friday - Balsamic Pork Roast

  • Saturday - Leftovers

  • Sunday - Blackened Salmon

On my to do list: Just to name a few things I need to do:

  • Change van fob battery

  • Organize entry bench (lots of random coats, hats, gloves, door hangings, etc)

  • Update homeschooling forms

  • Prep and/or finish probably 20 blog posts

  • Send the extra trash can form

  • Schedule my work times for the week

  • Vacuum and dust downstairs

  • Meal plan for rest of November and into December

  • Do a pantry inventory

  • Clear the deck (need to move the grill into the garage)

  • Start working on advent ideas

Happening this week: I’ve got a few work commitments to schedule in along with our usual homeschooling. We are going to try to hit the library on Wednesday or Thursday, but they have just lowered capacity to 25%. If we go in the morning around 9:30am, we should be fine.

What I am creating: I’m hoping to make some Christmas cards today. I finally got my storage system sorta organized (at least 70% done) and want to pause to actually make some cards.

My simple pleasures: Warm cookies from the oven, good scary books, snuggly blankets

Looking around the house: Argh! There is crap everywhere. I swear I am the only person in this house that ever picks anything up.. I need to go room by room and just pick up everything that doesn’t belong.

From the camera: Finally gather the leaves so we could jump into them. Really to clean them up, but the boys too advantage.

Join April, Jo, Mal, Molly and Ripley as they explore their all-girls camp. From ghost ponies to strange plants, these Lumberjanes are ready to take on anything that comes their way as long as they have each other.

With stories written by Eisner Award-winner Faith Erin Hicks, and New York Times bestselling author Holly Black, these adventures are definitely something you don’t want to miss. Collecting all the Lumberjanes one-shots for the first time, Lumberjanes: Bonus Tracks has a star studded cast of talent that is just too good to pass up!

Super fun collection of one-off stories. I loved revisiting the Lumberjane girls before my library received the next trade for me to read. My favorite story ending up being the one set in the Renaissance Faire. Apparently those woods really do have everything you can imagine! Loved the take on the Robin Hood story.

The Address Book by Deirdre Mask

addrewss.jpg

Title: The Address Book: What Street Addressed Reveal About Identity, Race, Wealth, and Power

Author: Deirdre Mask

Publisher: St. Martin’s Press 2020

Genre: Nonfiction

Pages: 336

Rating: 5/5 stars

Reading Challenges: Monthly Theme

When most people think about street addresses, if they think of them at all, it is in their capacity to ensure that the postman can deliver mail or a traveler won’t get lost. But street addresses were not invented to help you find your way; they were created to find you. In many parts of the world, your address can reveal your race and class.

In this wide-ranging and remarkable book, Deirdre Mask looks at the fate of streets named after Martin Luther King Jr., the wayfinding means of ancient Romans, and how Nazis haunt the streets of modern Germany. The flipside of having an address is not having one, and we also see what that means for millions of people today, including those who live in the slums of Kolkata and on the streets of London.

Filled with fascinating people and histories, The Address Book illuminates the complex and sometimes hidden stories behind street names and their power to name, to hide, to decide who counts, who doesn’t―and why.

Fascinating book about the history, future, and meaning of addresses. I loved the look at the importance of addresses around the world. I loved seeing how addresses affect daily life for people. At times this was a difficult book to read given the negative impact of not having an address, but it was a great examination of the topic.
