Lumberjanes Volumes

shape of friendship.jpg

Title: Lumberjanes The Shape of Friendship

Author: Lilah Sturges, Shannon Watters, Brooklyn Allen, Noelle Stevenson, Grace Ellis, polterink

Publisher: BOOM! 2019

Genre: Graphic Novel

Pages: 144

Rating: 4/5 stars

Reading Challenges:

While adventuring in the woods, Jo, Mal, Molly, April, and Ripley discover the hiding place of a group of magical creatures called Pookas and they think they’ve found new friends. But what they don’t know is that the Pookas are tired of hiding, and they’ve found the perfect way to join the outside world…by impersonating the Lumberjanes themselves and taking over Camp! To reclaim their identities, the ’Janes will have to work together to remember who they really are…and to help another group of friends accept themselves, too, in a story about looking inside yourself and learning to love who you meet there.

I didn’t quite realize that this was part of the first trade as a standalone volume. It was nice to revisit the ladies of Roanoke cabin and their first adventures into the woods.

Author: Lilah Sturges, Shannon Watters, Brooklyn Allen, Noelle Stevenson, Grace Ellis, polterink

Publisher: BOOM! 2018

Genre: Graphic Novel

Pages: 144

Rating: 4/5 stars

Reading Challenges:

The first original graphic novel set in the award winning and critically acclaimed Lumberjanes world!

When the Janes start to become separated during an orienteering outing thanks to a mysterious compass, Molly becomes more and more insecure about the effect of her relationship with Mal on the other girls. Meanwhile, a lonely woman explorer is trying to steal the compass, with the help of some weirdly polite automaton butlers.

Such a fun story! I loved this fun adventure. Mal and Molly are such a perfect fun couple.

Publisher: Villard 2007

Genre: Graphic Novel

Pages: 208

Rating: 4/5 stars

Reading Challenges:

Originally published by Image Comics in 2004, Flight, Volume One launched this graphic novel series with a resounding bang. Since then the Flight series has steadily increased in popularity–and now all of the Flight backlist will be coming to Villard!

Flight, Volume One received a great boost when graphic novel hero Scott McCloud praised the quality and artistry of the book in an afterward entitled THE YEAR COMICS TOOK FLIGHT. Little could readers know at the time how prophetic McCloud’s words would prove to be.

Random library find. I enjoyed this collection of stories all dealing with the concept of flight. The variety of styles and art was delightful. I read this in an enjoyable afternoon and am looking forward to reading volume two.

Collecting all the Lumberjanes one-shots for the first time, Lumberjanes: Bonus Tracks has a star studded cast of talent that is just too good to pass up!

Super fun collection of one-off stories. I loved revisiting the Lumberjane girls before my library received the next trade for me to read. My favorite story ending up being the one set in the Renaissance Faire. Apparently those woods really do have everything you can imagine! Loved the take on the Robin Hood story.

Confined to the Mess Hall, Jo and Molly give tabletop roleplaying a try, while Ripley, April, and Mal venture a little further afield after discovering a secret tunnel beneath the Kitchens...and the colossal prehistoric bug that lives there! Author: Kieron Gillen, Tamra Bonvillain, Dan Mora

Publisher: Boom Studios 2020

Genre: Comics

Pages: 160

Rating: 5/5 stars

Reading Challenges: Library

When a group of Nationalists use an ancient artifact to bring a villain from Arthurian myth back from the dead, retired monster hunter Bridgette McGuire pulls her unsuspecting grandson Duncan, a museum curator, into a world of magic and mysticism to defeat a legendary threat. Now the two must navigate the complicated history of the McGuire family, all while combating the deadly secrets of England’s past that threaten its very future.

Finally picked this one up and oh my goodness, it was a good one. I’m always up for a reimagining of classic stories and myths. This one takes the King Arthur myth and turns it on its head. The reader is thrown completely into the story with Duncan and left to figure put what exactly is going on. I loved encountering the various characters and attempting to understand their place in the larger story. I will be waiting on pins and needles for the next volume.

The Oracle Code

Title: The Oracle Code

Author: Marieke Nijkamp and Manuel Preitano

Publisher: DC 2020

Genre: Graphic Novel

Pages: 208

Rating: 4/5 stars

Reading Challenges: Monthly Theme - April

After a gunshot leaves her paralyzed, Barbara Gordon enters the Arkham Center for Independence, where Gotham's teens undergo physical and mental rehabilitation. Now using a wheelchair, Barbara must adapt to a new normal, but she cannot shake the feeling that something is dangerously amiss. Within these walls, strange sounds escape at night; patients go missing; and Barbara begins to put together pieces of what she believes to be a larger puzzle.

But is this suspicion simply a result of her trauma? Fellow patients try to connect with Barbara, but she pushes them away, and she'd rather spend time with ghost stories than participate in her daily exercises. Even Barbara's own judgment is in question.

In The Oracle Code, universal truths cannot be escaped, and Barbara Gordon must battle the phantoms of her past before they swarm her future.

I’m not usually one for capes or even for DC Comics, but this one peaked my interest. I really enjoyed this origin story for Barbara Gordon. We get a great coming-on-age angle. We get a bit of mystery. We get friendship. And this fits neatly into the larger DC universe. I don’t think I will be picking up more capes comics anytime soon, but this was a good afternoon’s reading material.

Publisher: Image 2017

Genre: Graphic Novel

Pages: 504

Rating: 4/5 stars

Reading Challenges: Monthly Theme - April

The world where Music is Magic has never looked better.

I loved Gillen and Mckelvie’s more recent comic series The Wicked + The Divine so I picked this one up to see if it had the same magic. Almost, but not quite. I enjoyed the overall storyline and many of the characters. Unfortunately, the focus on the main character (an arrogant white male) turned me off a bit. I enjoy series that have a much more varied cast of characters. So not my favorite, but I did love the invention of gods and goddesses involved in the music scene. Definitely a more high-brow comic full of obscure music references.

When the Yetis are kicked out of their treehouse, it’s up to the Roanokes to win their home back from the Sasquatches that took it over by beating them at roller derby.

To get the sasquatches to clear out, though, the Roanoke girls will have to challenge them to a roller derby match!

Another fun adventure with the campers of Roanoke cabin! I loved the little story at the beginning involving Diana and Barney. But the real action is definitely the roller derby fun.

Frida Kahlo by Maria Hesse

51ZWXDDNqlL._SX346_BO1,204,203,200_.jpg

Title: Frida Kahlo: An Illustrated Life

Author: Maria Hesse Translator: Achy Obejas

Publisher: University of Texas Press 2018

Genre: Graphic Novel Memoir

Pages: 152

Rating: 5/5 stars

Reading Challenges: Library

One of the most important artists of the twentieth century and an icon of courageous womanhood, Frida Kahlo lives on in the public imagination, where her popularity shows no signs of waning. She is renowned for both her paintings and her personal story, which were equally filled with pain and anguish, celebration and life. Thousands of words, including her own, have been written about Kahlo, but only one previous biography has recorded her fascinating, difficult life. Frida Kahlo by María Hesse offers a highly unique way of getting to know the artist by presenting her life in graphic novel form, with striking illustrations that reimagine many of Kahlo’s famous paintings.

Originally published in Spanish in 2016, Frida Kahlo has already found an enthusiastic audience in the Spanish-speaking world, with some 20,000 copies sold in just a few months. This translation introduces English-language readers to Kahlo’s life, from her childhood and the traumatic accident that would change her life and her artwork, to her complicated love for Diego Rivera and the fierce determination that drove her to become a major artist in her own right. María Hesse tells the story in a first-person narrative, which captures both the depths of Frida’s suffering and her passion for art and life.

Such an incredibly beautiful book about Frida Kahlo’s life. I loved turning each page to see what painting Hesse was going to recreate or reinterpret. I loved the little snippets of diary entries and letters sprinkled through more straight-forward biographical information. I adored poring over each illustration. Truly a remarkable work honoring a remarkable woman.

I was Their American Dream by Malaka Gharib

51t01Y4f7IL._SX331_BO1,204,203,200_.jpg

Title: I was Their American Dream

Author: Malaka Gharib

Publisher: Clarkson Potter 2019

Genre: Graphic Novel Memoir

Pages: 160

Rating: 3/5 stars

Reading Challenges: Library; Monthly Theme

I Was Their American Dream is at once a coming-of-age story and a reminder of the thousands of immigrants who come to America in search for a better life for themselves and their children. The daughter of parents with unfulfilled dreams themselves, Malaka navigated her childhood chasing her parents' ideals, learning to code-switch between her family's Filipino and Egyptian customs, adapting to white culture to fit in, crushing on skater boys, and trying to understand the tension between holding onto cultural values and trying to be an all-American kid.

Malaka Gharib's triumphant graphic memoir brings to life her teenage antics and illuminates earnest questions about identity and culture, while providing thoughtful insight into the lives of modern immigrants and the generation of millennial children they raised. Malaka's story is a heartfelt tribute to the American immigrants who have invested their future in the promise of the American dream.

I picked this one up on recommendation from the local library. While I was engaged in the story of identity and culture, I couldn’t help but compare it to other books and specifically graphic novel memoirs I have read. I kept being reminded of Persepolis by Marjane Satrapi. That volume really gutted me. This one felt a little too comedic to have the impact that I thought it should have. I wanted a bit more gravity to the story than I actually got. Beyond the comparisons, this was a interesting volume, just not quite something I would love.

Billie Holiday by Carlos Sampayo and Jose Munoz

514Kw29FFML._SX373_BO1,204,203,200_.jpg

Title: Billie Holiday

Author: Carlos Sampayo and Jose Munoz

Publisher: NBM Publishing 2017

Genre: Graphic Novel

Pages: 80

Rating: 4/5 stars

Reading Challenges: Library; Monthly Themes January

Born in Philadelphua in 1915, and dead too early in New York in 1959, Billie Holiday became a legendary jazz singer, even mythical. With her voice even now managing to touch so many people, we follow a reporter on the trail of the artist on behalf of a New York daily. Beyond the public scandals that marred the life of the star (alcohol, drugs, violence...), he seeks to restore the truth, revisiting the memory of Billie. Through this investigation, Muñoz and Sampayo trace, through the undertones of racism, and in the wake of the blues, the slow drift of a singer who expressed the deepest emotions in jazz. By internationally renowned Argentine artists, featuring Muñoz' strikingly raw heavy blacks, this is not just a biography but a spell-binding art book tribute.

This was a recommendation from the Omaha library for a biographical comic. Billie Holiday was a musical genius who led a very harsh life. I thoroughly enjoyed this comic interpretation of his life and work. This is certainly an adult comic with adult themes. I could only digest a few pages in one sitting. But it was oh so good. Put me in the mind to listen to some Billie Holiday and drink a cocktail.

Daybreak by Brian Ralph

5127-QaoezL._SX330_BO1,204,203,200_.jpg

Title: Daybreak

Author: Brian Ralph

Publisher: Drawn and Quarterly 2013

Genre: Comics

Pages: 160

Rating: 5/5 stars

Reading Challenges: Library

You wake up in the rubble and see a ragged, desperate one-armed man greeting you. He takes you underground to a safe space, feeds you, offers you a place to sleep, and then announces that he'll take the first watch. It's not long before the peril of the jagged landscape has located you and your newfound protector and is scratching at the door.

What transpires is a moment-to-moment struggle for survival―The Road meets Dawn of the Dead. Daybreak is seen through the eyes of a silent observer as he follows his protector and runs from the shadows of the imminent zombie threat. Brian Ralph slowly builds the tension of the zombies on the periphery, letting the threat―rather than the actual carnage―be the driving force. The postapocalyptic backdrop features tangles of rocks, lumber, I-beams, and overturned cars that are characters in and of themselves.

We watched the television series last month and I had to pick up the original material. I sped through this slim graphic novel in record time. I was fascinated by the story and couldn’t wait to see what happened to our unseen narrator and the few we meet along the way. The last page was harrowing! I loved every single cell in this book. So good.

Adolescent girls can be real monsters. Maude is twelve, about the age some girls turn into flesh-eating wild cats. As her detective dad investigates a series of strange mauling attacks, Maude worries she may be the killer. Collects #1-4

A friend lent me these two trades because he thought I would like them. And boy did I! I love this feminist tale of female growth and empowerment. The storyline is thoroughly original and the characters are great fun. I sped through this volume and then had to go back and reread my favorite advertisements and extras. I can’t wait to see what’s next.

Another great volume. I loved how the story developed in these issues. The mystery has deepened and Maude has became such a great main character. Love it!

Title: Monstress Volume 4

Author: Marjorie Liu, Sana Takeda

Publisher: Image 2019

Genre: Graphic Novel

Pages: 176

Rating: 4/5 stars

Reading Challenges:

Maika and Corvin make their way through a warped and lethal land in search of Kippa, who is faced with her own terrible monsters. But when Maika comes face-to-face with a stranger from her deep past, startling truths are uncovered, and at the center of it all lurks a dangerous conspiracy that threatens the Known World. Maika is finally close to getting all the answers she ever wanted, but at what price? With war on the horizon-a war no one wants to stop-whose side will Maika choose? Collects MONSTRESS #19-24.

This series just keeps getting weirder and weirder. I’m having a bit of trouble keeping all the different storylines/characters straight within this very complicated world. I did really enjoy following Kippa and her predicament. I’m certain that I will pick up the next volume, but my goodness, this series is intense.

After five years, we reach the final volume. We go not gentle into that good night, but go driving a converted tank, covered in glitter and spangles, with a soundsystem audible from Mars blaring nothing but bangers. Gods, pop stars, an ending. We'll miss you.
Collects THE WICKED +THE DIVINE #40-45

Another series ender. I guess October has been the month of comics series ending… I loved the ending of this series. We finally get clarification about the beginning of this sequence, plus an awakening from so many of the characters. And we even get the return of a few characters. Hello Lucifer! I wasn’t quite as sold on the last issue’s time jump, but it still felt relevant to the story and characters. I’m so sad to see this series end.

Title: The Walking Dead Vol. 32: Rest in Peace

Author: Robert Kirkman, Charlie Adlard, Stefano Gaudiano, Cliff Rathburn, Dave Stewart

Genre: Comics

Pages: 224

Rating: 4/5 stars

Reading Challenges:

The Commonwealth and Alexandria have joined forces but at what cost to Rick? Collects THE WALKING DEAD #187-193.

We have finally come to the end… and I’m a little disappointed. I read the afterward from Robert Kirkman and understand his reasons for ending the series the way he did. However, I was still a little thrown by the time jump for the last issue. I wasn’t quire sure that I wanted to see the surviving people that many years in the future. And yet, I still found myself enjoying this last trade. It was a nice ending to a very very very long series.

Title: Rat Queens Vol. 6: The Infernal Path

Author: Kurtis Wiebe; Owen Gieni

Publisher: Image

Genre: Graphic Novel

Pages: 152

Rating: 3/5 stars

Reading Challenges: Graphic Novel

The further adventures of the booze guzzling, death dealing battle maidens-for-hire in the business of killing all the gods’ creatures for profit. Hannah the Rockabilly Elven Mage, Violet the Hipster Dwarven Fighter, Dee the Atheist Human Cleric, Betty the Hippy Smidgen Thief and Braga the Orc Princess.
RAT QUEENS is a modern spin on an old school genre, a monster killing epic with a twisted sense of humor. Collects RAT QUEENS Volume 2 #11-15 and NEON STATIC SPECIAL

Hmmm… I’m a bit disappointed in this volume of issues. I just don’t feel the same joy as I did at the beginning of this series. The storyline has become a bit convoluted and hard to follow. I am not loving some the choices for characters. And the art has gone down a bit. I really loved the art style in the beginning. I imagine that I will pick up the next trade when it publishes, but I won’t rush out for it.
