Once & Future Vol. 5

Title: Once & Future Vol. 5: The Wasteland

Author: Kieron Gillen, Dan Mora, Tamra Bonvillain

Publisher: BOOM! Studios 2023

Genre: Comics

Pages: 160

Rating: 5/5 stars

Reading Challenges:

WIt’s the day before Christmas and the Kings all converge on Excalibur, each determined to be the true ruler. Chaos arises! What if no one has the strength to take the sword? Will there finally be peace after so much conflict, or will an unexpected figure claim the throne? Rituals, bombs, and battles ensue, while the final fate of Mary, Rose, Bridgette, Merlin, and the rest awaits! The incomparable Kieron Gillen (The Wicked + The Divine) and Dan Mora (Detective Comics) deliver the long-awaited conclusion to their Hugo Award-nominated mystical modern take on Arthurian legend! Collects Once & Future #25-30.

And so the story ends! I have loved this series from the beginning and so glad that we have a definite end to the story. All the different threads come together for an epic all-out battle for control of Britain. We get conclusions for all of the characters, but Galahad’s ending was my favorite. Justice for Galahad! We also get a few more nods to classic myths and stories. Overall, I really loved this reimagining of the King Arthur story. Kieron Gillen is definitely one of my favorite modern comic book writers.

WAR OF THE KINGS!

Bridgette, Duncan, and Rose, – along with the entirety of Britain – are dragged into the Otherworld. It's a land of predatory monsters and things seem like they can't get any worse.

Of course they can. A rival king rises to confront Arthur, plunging the land into civil war... and both pursue Bridgette, Duncan and Rose as they travel across the land, desperately trying to find a way to return Britain to its senses...

New York Times bestselling writer Kieron Gillen joins Russ Manning Award winning artist Dan Mora, and colorist Tamra Bonvillain present the next chapter in the Hugo and Eisner Award nominated series.

Collects Once & Future #19-24.

Another great collection of issues from this series. The tension is definitely ratcheting up from our last trade. Things are becoming dire and the final war is looming closer and closer. In this volume, we get some maneuvering and more insight into the enemy camps. We also encounter two more story characters, one of which I gasped out loud at the reveal. I really loved the inclusion of Shakespeare and his works. Can't wait to see what happens next.

Oh I am so incredibly into this comic series. We get appearances from three more story characters and learn more about Merlin and Nimue and Arthur. Lots of action in this volume and lots of gore. Love it! Can’t wait for the next one.

Rating: 4/5 stars

Reading Challenges: Monthly Theme - April

The world where Music is Magic has never looked better.

I loved Gillen and Mckelvie’s more recent comic series The Wicked + The Divine so I picked this one up to see if it had the same magic. Almost, but not quite. I enjoyed the overall storyline and many of the characters. Unfortunately, the focus on the main character (an arrogant white male) turned me off a bit. I enjoy series that have a much more varied cast of characters. So not my favorite, but I did love the invention of gods and goddesses involved in the music scene. Definitely a more high-brow comic full of obscure music references.

After five years, we reach the final volume. We go not gentle into that good night, but go driving a converted tank, covered in glitter and spangles, with a soundsystem audible from Mars blaring nothing but bangers. Gods, pop stars, an ending. We'll miss you.
Collects THE WICKED +THE DIVINE #40-45

Another series ender. I guess October has been the month of comics series ending… I loved the ending of this series. We finally get clarification about the beginning of this sequence, plus an awakening from so many of the characters. And we even get the return of a few characters. Hello Lucifer! I wasn’t quite as sold on the last issue’s time jump, but it still felt relevant to the story and characters. I’m so sad to see this series end.

Modernist poets trapped in an Agatha Christie Murder Mystery. The Romantics gathering in Lake Geneva to resurrect the dead. What really happened during the fall of Rome. The Lucifer who was a nun, hearing Ananke's Black Death confession. As we approach the end, we start to see the full picture. Also includes the delights of the WicDiv Christmas Annual and the Comedy special.

Collects all six of THE WICKED + THE DIVINE's essential Specials.

Woot! I get to read all the specials without buying them all individually. I loved the historical episodes involving the cycle of the gods. My favorite was definitely the murder mystery set in 1923. The mix of comic panels and text passages was a fun change for the usual format. I also really enjoyed the Romantic story modeled on the creation of Frankenstein. Really really loved this collection. Now I have to wait until the fall to get the final trade of the series.

Seriously love this series! The twists and turns in this trade took me for a ride. I didn’t know what was going on and had to reread a few issues. But seriously in a good way. It was such a great volume. The two years are almost up and I’m waiting on pins and needles to find out how it’s going to end.

When you're at the peak of your powers, there's only one way to go. The question becomes—how many people are you willing to drag down with you? The bestselling, critically acclaimed comic by KIERON GILLEN, JAMIE McKELVIE and MATT WILSON reaches its most dramatic arc yet. Collects THE WICKED + THE DIVINE #29-33

Oh holy cow that was a crazy collection of issues. I truly did not see the ending twist coming, but the earlier ones weren't as much of a surprise. This volume has me falling more and more for the remaining gods. So very interesting! I love how this series combines modern times and problems with ancient mythology. Plus the graphics are just absolutely amazing. I can't wait for the next volume.
