10 Commandments

Swiss/British philosopher and writer Alain de Botton has come up with a modern list of 10 Commandments for atheists to live by.  I often hear that because atheists do not believe in any higher power, they have no moral code.  That is not true.  Generally, atheists have very strong moral codes. These are the values that I want to instill in my children.  Separating the religion/lack of religion aspect out of this list, I think this guy has captured some decent values for just being a good person. Check them out.

  1. Resilience: Keeping going even when things are looking dark.
  2. Empathy: The capacity to connect imaginatively with the sufferings and unique experiences of another person.
  3. Patience: We should grow calmer and more forgiving by being more realistic about how things actually happen.
  4. Sacrifice: We won’t ever manage to raise a family, love someone else or save the planet if we don’t keep up with the art of sacrifice.
  5. Politeness: Politeness is closely linked to tolerance, the capacity to live alongside people whom one will never agree with, but at the same time, cannot avoid.
  6. Humor: Like anger, humor springs from disappointment, but it is disappointment optimally channelled.
  7. Self-awareness: To know oneself is to try not to blame others for one’s troubles and moods; to have a sense of what’s going on inside oneself, and what actually belongs to the world.
  8. Forgiveness: It’s recognizing that living with others is not possible without excusing errors.
  9. Hope: Pessimism is not necessarily deep, nor optimism shallow.
  10. Confidence: Confidence is not arrogance – rather, it is based on a constant awareness of how short life is and how little we will ultimately lose from risking everything.

The Watsons by Jane Austen

watsons (1920).jpeg

Title: The Watsons

Author: Jane Austen

Genre: Classics

Pages: 88

Rating: 3/5 stars

Reading Challenges: Jane Austen; Mount TBR; Fall into Reading

How I Got It: iPad read

Mr. Watson is a widowed clergyman with two sons and four daughters. The youngest daughter, Emma, has been brought up by a wealthy aunt and is consequently better educated and more refined than her sisters. But when her aunt contracts a foolish second marriage, Emma is obliged to return to her father's house. There she is chagrined by the crude and reckless husband-hunting of two of her twenty-something sisters.

Another unfinished piece from Jane Austen.  I was more intrigued by this piece than Lady Susan or Love and Friendship, but it's still sorely lacking (and not because of it's unfinished state).  The piece just doesn't have the same wit and critique that her six finished works do.  I did grow to enjoy the interplay between Emma and Penelope.  Such fun characters!  If only they were a bit more developed.

Quote Wednesday -- Gaiman

"You get ideas from daydreaming. You get ideas from being bored. You get ideas all the time. The only difference between writers and other people is we notice when we’re doing it." - Neil Gaiman

I want to be more aware of my ideas and get them down on paper (or computer).  I imagine that Gaiman daydreams a lot.  How else does he come up with all these strange story ideas?

Love and Friendship by Jane Austen

Title: Love and Friendship

Author: Jane Austen

Genre: Classics

Pages: 64

Rating: 3/5 stars

Reading Challenges: Jane Austen; Mount TBR; Fall into Reading

How I Got It: iPad read

From Wikipedia:

Love and Freindship [sic] is a juvenile story by Jane Austen, dated 1790. From the age of eleven until she was eighteen, Jane Austen wrote her tales in three notebooks. The notebooks still exist – one in the Bodleian Library; the other two in the British Museum. They include among others Love and Freindship, written when Jane was fourteen, and The History of England, when she was fifteen.  Written in epistolary form, like her later unpublished novella, Lady Susan, Love and Freindship is thought to be one of the tales she wrote for the amusement of her family; it was dedicated to her cousin Eliza de Feuillide, "La Comtesse de Feuillide". The installments, written as letters from the heroine Laura, to Marianne, the daughter of her friend Isabel, may have come about as nightly readings by the young Jane in the Austen home. Love and Freindship (the misspelling is one of many in the story) is clearly a parody of romantic novels Austen read as a child. This is clear even from the subtitle, "Deceived in Freindship and Betrayed in Love", which completely undercuts the title.

An interesting bit of writing from my favorite author.  Right away you can tell that this was written very early on in her life.  There's a sense of immaturity about the characters and the plot.  But we do get a little of the wit and social criticism that are so prevalent in her later works.  I wouldn't say that I really enjoyed this volume, but I did appreciate discovering another piece of Austen's writing.

100 Days in Deadland by Rachel Aukes

100-days (1920).jpeg

Title: 100 Days in Deadland (Deadland Saga #1)

Author: Rachel Aukes

Publisher: Surprisingly Adequate Publishing 2013

Genre: Zombies

Pages: 450

Rating:  4/5 stars

Reading Challenges: Zombies; Mount TBR; 52 Books -- W46; Bingo -- 4 from 2013; Fall into Reading

How I Got It: Free Kindle Read

A journey through Dante's Inferno with a shambling twist.

The world ended on a Thursday. In one day, the world succumbed to a pestilence that decimated the living. In its place rose a new species: vicious, gruesome, wandering zombies with an insatiable hunger for the living. There is no government. No shelter. No hope. Still in her twenties, Cash has watched her friends die, only to walk again. An office worker with few survival skills, she joins up with Clutch, a grizzled Army veteran with PTSD. Together, they flee the city and struggle through the nine circles of hell, with nothing but Clutch's military experience and Cash's determination to live. As they fight to survive in the zombie inferno, they quickly discover that nowhere is safe from the undead...or the living.

I started this book mainly because I needed another break from The Count of Monte Cristo.  Plus, it was on my iPad which meant I could read during night feedings.  To my surprise, I really enjoyed the book.  It's a good fast paced zombie thriller with interesting characters.  I really loved Cash and Clutch and Jase.  The zombies were scary and the human villains even scarier.  I loved the progression of the plot and even how it ended.  There's a nontraditional ending, but it completely fits with the story and the situation.  I love that we don't get a cliche.  My only complaint is the "romance" between the two main characters.   I had hoped that the author wouldn't go there, but she did.  For the most part, it wasn't a huge turnoff.  Although the sex scene seemed very out of place with the rest of the novel.  I think that couldn't have been edited out and nothing would be lost.  Overall, I really enjoyed this free ebook.  I might even pick up (and even pay) for the next book releasing this coming year.

Music Monday -- Arctic Monkeys "Do I Wanna Know?"

There's a special place in heart for the Arctic Monkeys.  They never fail to make me feel good and sing along.  Their new album, AM, is just a treasure.  They've grown so much since the first album.  This is the first song and the album.  The beat alone gets me up and moving.  Enjoy!

Lyrics:

Have you got colour in your cheeks? Do you ever get that fear that you can't shift the tide that sticks around like summat in your teeth? Are there some aces up your sleeve? Have you no idea that you're in deep? I've dreamt about you nearly every night this week How many secrets can you keep? 'Cause there's this tune I found that makes me think of you somehow and I play it on repeatUntil I fall asleepSpilling drinks on my settee

(Do I wanna know?) If this feeling flows both ways (Sad to see you go) I've started hoping that you'd stay (Didn't we both know) That the nights were mainly made for saying things that you can't say tomorrow day

Crawling back to you

Ever thought of calling when you've had a few? 'Cause I always do Maybe I'm too busy being yours to fall for somebody new Now I've thought it through

Crawling back to you

So have you got the goods? Been wondering if your heart's still open and if so I wanna know what time it shuts Simmer down and pucker up I'm sorry to interrupt it's just I'm constantly on the cusp of trying to kiss you I don't know if you feel the same as I do We could be together if you wanted to

(Do I wanna know?) If this feeling flows both ways (Sad to see you go) I've started hoping that you'd stay (Didn't we both know) That the nights were mainly made for saying things that you can't say tomorrow day

Crawling back to you (crawling back to you)

Ever thought of calling when you've had a few? (you've had a few) 'Cause I always do ('cause I always do) Maybe I'm too (maybe I'm too busy) busy being yours to fall for somebody new Now I've thought it through

Crawling back to you

(Do I wanna know?) If this feeling flows both ways (Sad to see you go) I've started hoping that you'd stay (Didn't we both know) That the nights were mainly made for saying things that you can't say tomorrow day

(Do I wanna know?) Too busy being yours to fall (Sad to see you go) Ever thought of calling darlin'? (Do I wanna know?) Do you want me crawling back to you?

Sunday Sunset #37

Listening To: Random songs from my iTunes account.  Sometimes the juxtapositions kill me.

Book finished: The Billionaire Wins the Game; Saving Wishes

Reading: 100 Days in Deadland; The Count of Monte Cristo (still...  slowly getting through it)

On the Nightstand: The Lace Reader by Brunonia Barry; Vanity Fair by William Makepeace Thackeray

Crafting: Besides doing my weekly Project Life Pages (check out October's pages), I managed to squeeze about 20 minutes in on Saturday morning for Christmas cards.  I've signed up for two Christmas card classes, so I decided to finish up my own random cards.  I knocked out three cards using lots of scraps (hurray for supply reduction!) and managed to organize my Christmas supply drawer.  I have about 45 Christmas cards done.  I think I will stop there and wait for the class cards. I may have to finish a few more before the holidays, but I don't want to overdo it this year.  Here's two of my random scrap cards.  I took these images from some cut up scrapbook pages.  I added the sentiment and the washi tape and striped scrap.  I love the washi tape on the Santa card.  Overall, I really love how these two came out and I used two large scraps that have been in the box for two years!

IMG_4563 (1920).jpg

Watching: All the usuals... Arthur and I are really enjoying the crazy campiness that is Dracula.  Okay, so I am enjoying it.  Arthur could care less, but I'm usually watching it while he's sitting with me.

From Nature: Beautiful weather like usual.  I love being able to enjoy fall and still wear sandals.  Arthur and I went on a few walks this week taking advantage of the mild temperatures.

Shopping Scores: My order from H&M came in the mail this week.  I bought a dress for me (very forgiving for post-pregnancy bodies) and some pants for Arthur.  The tag says 4-6 months, but good graciousness the pants are huge...  Well, he'll grow into them someday.  Now I need to buy another pair of pants for his Christmas outfit.

Picture: Baby yawns are too adorable!  And he makes the cutest sighing sound afterward.

This movie looks to be exactly something I would pick up...

OMG!!!  I do so love my Wes Anderson movies.  And this one looks like so much fun!

Facts about candy.  A little late for Halloween, but still interesting.

I can always rely on Honest Trailers for a bit of fun.  I have two for your today: Pacific Rim and Thor.

Fascinating answer to a deceptively simple question...

FF #38: Coffeehouse Time

Coffeehouse Time

I used to spend loads of time in coffeehouse to blog or read or just enjoy some quiet time with a cup of coffee.  The key to this outfit is comfort.  I wanted to create an outfit that I would genuinely wear to go grab coffee.  Unfortunately, it remains too warm in my area to fully wear this outfit, but I do want to mimic this for my trip back to Indiana for Christmas.  It just looks so comfy!  I really want to find some colored jeans and a nice plaid shirt to add to my existing boots and old man cardigan.

Genre: New Adult

Reading Challenges: Eclectic -- New Adult; Mount TBR; Bingo -- 4 from 2013 releases; Fall into Reading

How I Got It: Free Kindle read

For Charli Blake, being seventeen is a tough gig. She's been branded a troublemaker, her reputation is in tatters and she's stuck in Pipers Cove, a speck of a town on the coast of Tasmania. Thankfully, it's temporary. Her lifelong dream of traveling the world is just months away from becoming reality. All she has to do is ride out the last few months of high school, which is easier said than done thanks to a trio of mean girls known as The Beautifuls. When Adam Décarie arrives in town, all the way from New York, life takes an unexpected turn. His arrival sets off a chain of events that alters her life forever, convincing her of one thing. Fate brought him to her. Saving Wishes is the story of a girl who doesn't quite fit the life she's living, and the boy who helps her realise why.

This isn't a bad book, but it isn't a good one either.  I am completely neutral when it came to this novel.  I liked the premise and storyline.  I liked the idea of having Charli find out what she wants from life.  I even liked the idea of Adam helping her do it.  But I didn't really liked how it was executed.  I felt like we spent way too much time reiterating how Charli always flees and her various defense mechanisms.  It become all too repetitive.  I kept waiting for the real story to get moving, but it just kept dragging and dragging.  I finished it, but probably only because I have been reading it during the middle of the night feedings and didn't want to switch books.  Overall, I'm just "meh" about this book.

Project Life October

With my new method of scrapping, I journal and lay out the spreads every Sunday, but don't print pictures every week.  Instead, I will be printing them monthly for convenience and hopefully to use some of the printing deals at Snapfish and Walgreens. I started the weekly spreads with Arthur's birth.  Overall, his and the family album are very similar.  I usually only have a few minor differences (I don't think he will care what I was blogging about in any given week or what I was reading).  I think I'm going to stay pretty constant week to week with the family album.  I love the idea of having inserts for each day that I can use to jot down what we did.  I can always change the format, but this seems really appealing right now.

Oct. 14 - 20

The big highlight of the week was that Arthur arrived, of course!  The first two photos are the weekly spread from Arthur's album.  I added the week's dates stamped onto an insert card (I will continue to do this for every week, I love the look!).  I also added some informational cards about his birth our journey home.  The second two photos are the weekly spread from the family album.  I used many of the same pictures, but instead of random inserts, I did a card for each day.  I wrote a quick list of what we did each day to remember the week better.  I love the colors on the Sunshine kit inserts and went with a fun collection of colors for this week.  Plus, I added some baby related stickers to one of the inserts to give it some more character.

Oct. 21 - 27

The highlight of the week was lots of visitors!  Arthur met his first people outside of mom, dad, and hospital staff.  He looks like he's crying in the picture with Auntie Cecilia, but he's actually yawning.  They caught us right before nap time.

Again, I did a bulleted list of weekly happenings.  I also added Arthur's inked footprint.  The ones they did in the hospital were horrible and the ink bled throughout the entire paper.  I did mine using the standard Stampin' Up ink and paper.  They're not super dark, but I still got them.

Oct. 28 - Nov. 3

It's Halloween!  Not that we actually did anything with a two week old baby, but still I had to add some Halloween themed inserts.  I bought the PL Holidays Mini-kit.  I love the insert designs and the fact that you get two large inserts and eight small inserts for each of the holidays.  I added the three dimensional Halloween themed stickers and the Happy Baby sticker from my scrapbooking stash.  For the 3x4 pictures, I just printed a regular 4x6 and cut it down to the right size.  Thankfully I had a few pictures that could be cropped to fill the slots.

Quote Wednesday -- Lamott

"For some of us, books are as important as almost anything else on earth. What a miracle it is that out of these small, flat, rigid squares of paper unfolds world after world after world, worlds that sing to you, comfort and quiet or excite you. Books help us understand who we are and how we are to behave. They show us what community and friendship mean; they show us how to live and die." - Anne Lamott

Wow!  Check out the power in this quote.  This is too beautiful...  I'm sure all book lovers can relate to this one.

Arthur: 3 Weeks

We're still in the midst of a crazy growth spurt.  All he seems to want to do is eat...

IMG_4441 (1920).jpg

Likes: Being held all the time.  During this growth spurt he has really attached himself to us. Also, he now loves staring at the patterns in his crib, the Enterprise mobile, and my chair, which is a gray and white floral pattern.  He's starting to notice more of the world around him.

IMG_4444 (1920).jpg

Dislikes: Gas.  I have one gassy baby and he gets so upset when he has it. Burping can only take care of so much.  The rest comes out the other end very loudly.

IMG_4449 (1920).jpg

Sleeping: With this growth spurt, our good 4 hours stretches of sleep are long gone.  Now he only goes 2-3 hours if we're lucky.  He's making it harder to get back to sleep after waking.  Lots of fussing and general crankiness.  Plus, he wants to sleep on us instead of in his crib.  And he was doing so well!

IMG_4456 (1920).jpg

IMG_4458 (1920).jpg

Eating: Since we've switched to formula only, Arthur and me have both had a better time.  Gone are the frustrating breast feeding and pumping sessions.  Instead, we have a bottle and a bit of burping and we're finished.  We have more time to play and generally be cute.  Volume-wise, he's eating 3 - 3 1/3 ounces in one sitting.  Unfortunately, that much formula isn't translating to longer sleep times yet.

IMG_4460 (1920).jpg
IMG_4464 (1920).jpg

Playing: Tummy time is less hated that it was, but he's still not a huge fan.  He hasn't played with any of this toys, but he has started to grab at things more.

IMG_4473 (1920).jpg

IMG_4475 (1920).jpg

Medical Milestones: We're experiencing more and more awake and alert time.  He's really getting interested in stretching out his body and especially pushing his legs against things.  I hope this doesn't mean he will be an early walker.  Don't know if I can take that...

IMG_4480 (1920).jpg
IMG_4482 (1920).jpg
IMG_4485 (1920).jpg

Schedule: Still kind of all over the place when it comes to schedule.  But I noticing that he is most alert in the mid morning hours (8-noonish).  That's when we have a lot of fun with tummy time and tempting him with toys.  I hope to start a bedtime routine this coming week to start getting our nights and days straight.

IMG_4488 (1920).jpg
IMG_4490 (1920).jpg

My Recovery: I've basically stopped my pain meds.  I still have some Motrin lying around just in case (I had to take one yesterday), but I'm not taking them on any schedule anymore.  Certain movements still cause a bit of pain and discomfort, but overall, I'm feeling pretty good.  Arthur and I have been on multiple walks this past week making it all the way to the post office and back (about 5 blocks round trip).  I also went out by myself on Sunday to run some errands and didn't get too tired.  Plus, I seem to have escaped the worst of the post-baby blues.  My mood is fairly stable although these headaches can go away any time now.

Bastille "Pompeii" -- Heavy rotation on Alt Nation lately and yet I still love it!

The Boxer Rebellion "Broken Glass" -- Random Pandora find.

Sunday Sunset #36

Listening To: Random songs from my iTunes account and the iTunes radio 3 of a kind: Mumford and Sons, Of Monsters and Men, and The Lumineers channel.  I love the mix of artists on the channel, but iTunes radio repeats songs a bit too much for me.  I think I'm going to have to stick with Pandora.

Book finished: None, still in the middle of a huge book...

Reading: The Count of Monte Cristo by Alexandre Dumas; I may also start Billionaire Wins the Game to read alongside Count.  I may need a break from Dumas...

On the Nightstand: Billionaire Wins the Game by Melody Anne, Boneshaker by Cherie Priest

From the kitchen: Just trying to make easy dinners.  Using all the food that I had stored in the freezer pre-baby.  It's getting to be a little sparse in there now.  I may need to take a day and make a few more freezer meals.

On the Web: Attempting to start to catch up on my blogroll.  I've been way behind since I took three days off from reading to have a baby.  Working through my blogs when Arthur is sleeping.  I sometimes even read them to him when he's being fussy.  He likes being read to...

Crafting: None this week except for my weekly Project Life spreads.  I'll be sharing our October pages later this week.

Watching: Along with all of our current tv shows, we finally watched Admission the other night.  Not the funniest movie, but it did have a few good lines.  During the day, I've been watching my soapy shows so J doesn't have to: Revenge, Once Upon a Time, Once Upon a Time in Wonderland, and The Voice.  And of course, we have our usual currently airing shows: Castle, The League, It's Always Sunny.

Wondering: When will these headaches go away?  Damn post-pregnancy hormone changes!

From Nature: For our area, the temperatures have been all over the place.  One day it's 73 and the next it's 66.  Crazy fluctuations!  I must say that I prefer the 66 degree days for taking a walk with Arthur.  I still get so hot, I like it to be a bit cooler.  And Arthur likes snuggling with his blanket.

Shopping Scores: After somehow missing the fact that it had been released, I rushed to Amazon and ordered Hyperbole and Half by Allie Brosh.  I love her blog so much!  I even ordered it in a physical copy to treasure all the pretties inside.

Project: Does taking care of a newborn count?  If so, them I am all over that project.

Picture: Not quite sure about his activity gym yet...

How I Got It: I own it

Joseph Anderson has decided it's time for his three successful sons to find brides. Joseph wants grandchildren to fill his mansion, and he wants them immediately. His eldest son, Lucas, is successful in all areas of his life, except love, and Joseph begins matchmaking. He finds Amy Harper and deems her the perfect daughter-in-law. He just needs to get her and Lucas to both realize they're made for each other.

Lucas Anderson is wealthy, sexy, and stubborn. He has no desire to have any woman enter his life, causing chaos, or using his family's name. Many women have tried, and he's been successful in finding out who they are beneath their false smiles.

Amy Harper was raised in tragic circumstances and doesn't like pampered, rich men who have been handed everything with a silver spoon. She spent years finishing her education and then received a job with the Anderson Corporation. She instantly doesn't like her incredibly sexy boss, who is arrogant and thinks every woman should fall at his feet.

I picked this up to take a fun romance break from the epic that is The Count of Monte Cristo.  Unfortunately, what I got was a poorly written tromp through every romance cliche and stereotype I know of.  We get the over-bearing, macho, pig-headed male lead who's very experienced in bed.  We get the cautious and yet willful and pig-headed female lead who's a virgin.  We get meddling parents.  We get instant attraction. We get lies and omissions. We get misunderstandings that could clear everything up in five seconds.  We get an accidental pregnancy.  We get a forced shotgun marriage that the female lead resists but submits quickly.  We get a 180 degree change in attitude without ever discussing anything.  And finally we get a happily-ever-after.  Ugh!  Too much crap shoved into one short book.  Plus, it is badly written with changes in scenes, narrators, and action with little or no warning.  I had to reread many paragraphs just to figure out what the hell was going on. I thought about DNFing the book many times and yet I finished it for some reason.  I blame the sleep deprivation.

This is one of those outfits that I went into thinking something very different.  The outcome was a complete surprise.  I started with the gorgeous unusual skirt.  In trying to find a top that wouldn't completely overwhelm the details of the skirt, I stumbled upon the lace top.  Very delicate and yet structured!  The addition of the jacket is mainly because I felt that the outfit needed a bit more to try everything together.  And the shoes and purse are just classics.
