Mythos by Stephen Fry

Title: Mythos: The Greek Myths Reimagined

Author: Stephen Fry

Publisher: Chronicle Books 2019

Genre: Mythology

Pages: 352

Rating: 5/5 stars

Reading Challenges: Library

Mythos is a modern collection of Greek myths, stylishly retold by legendary writer, actor, and comedian Stephen Fry. Fry transforms the adventures of Zeus and the Olympians into emotionally resonant and deeply funny stories, without losing any of their original wonder. This stunning book features classical artwork inspired by the myths, as well as learned notes from the author.

I’m a sucker for retold Greek and Roman myths. There’s something very comfortable about revisiting stories that I first learned as a child. This collection is pretty extensive, covering so many stories and legends in a loose chronological order. I especially loved the stories about the Titans and before. Fry’s trademark snark comes through in random asides and sentences throughout. I really enjoyed this one!

Life Right Now #9

As I look outside my window: The snow from yesterday hasn’t melted yet… Very weird after last week’s high temperatures.

Right now I am: Taking a moment before the kids really get amped up for the day.

Thinking and pondering: How long is school going to be canceled. Here’s hoping it’s not the 6 weeks that I’ve heard…

On my bedside table: After the Flood by Kassandra Montag; The Jane Austen Project by Kathleen Flynn

On my tv this week: Nothing actually. But the theater was finally set up last night so we got to actually sit down and watch something.

Listening to: All the podcasts like usual. Really loving the Currently Reading podcast.

On the menu for this week:

  • Monday - Leftovers

  • Tuesday - Red Curry Noodle Soup

  • Wednesday - Cheesy Artichoke Pasta

  • Thursday - Ranch Cheddar Chicken

  • Friday - Spicy Thai Noodles

  • Saturday - Leftovers

  • Sunday - Pork and Green Chile Stew

On my to do list: All the house projects. Goodness!!!

Happening this week: Well, school is technically on spring break, but I imagine it would be closed anyway. So we’ve instituted a schedule of school-like activities to keep some routine. I put in an order for some extra activity books and some games to play while we are stuck in doors.

What I am creating: Nothing at the moment. Here’s hoping I can do some crafting this coming week.

My simple pleasures: Key lime pie, a good cup of coffee, my own bed.

Looking around the house: Slowly slowly we are getting things put away.

From the camera: Yesterday’s scene in the backyard.

On the day the government decrees that women are no longer allowed more than one hundred words per day, Dr. Jean McClellan is in denial. This can't happen here. Not in America. Not to her.

Soon women are not permitted to hold jobs. Girls are not taught to read or write. Females no longer have a voice. Before, the average person spoke sixteen thousand words each day, but now women have only one hundred to make themselves heard.

For herself, her daughter, and every woman silenced, Jean will reclaim her voice.

This is just the beginning...not the end.

I was intrigued by the set-up and the comparisons to The Handmaid’s Tale. Unfortunately, what I read was a book trying way too hard to be relevant in our current political climate filled with unlikable characters and a ridiculous thriller style plot. Shoehorned in there is very surface level commentary about sexism, religion, politics, and science. And don’t get me started on Jean and Patrick’s relationship, their relationship to the children, and Jean and Lorenzo’s relationship. Just no. But what irked me the most was the timeline. This is all supposed to have happened in a few short years and then is undone in less than a year. Um no. I don’t buy it without some catastrophic event like a plague or war. Girly Book Club has once again disappointed me with their science fiction selection. We only get one a year and last year’s was terrible (American War) and this year’s choice is just as bad…

The Secret, Book and Scone Society by Ellery Adams

Title: The Secret, Book & Scone Society (Secret, Book & Scone Society #1)

Author: Ellery Adams

Publisher: Kensington Books 2017

Genre: Mystery

Pages: 285

Rating: 3/5 stars

Reading Challenges: Library; Monthly Theme

Strangers flock to Miracle Springs hoping the natural hot springs, five-star cuisine, and renowned spa can cure their ills. If none of that works, they often find their way to Miracle Books, where, over a fresh-baked “comfort” scone, they exchange their stories with owner Nora Pennington in return for a carefully chosen book. That’s Nora’s special talent—prescribing the perfect novel to ease a person’s deepest pain. So when a visiting businessman reaches out for guidance, Nora knows exactly how to help. But before he can keep their appointment, he’s found dead on the train tracks . . .

Stunned, Nora forms the Secret, Book, and Scone Society, a group of damaged souls yearning to earn redemption by helping others. To join, members must divulge their darkest secret—the terrible truth that brought each of them to Miracle Springs in the first place. Now, determined to uncover the truth behind the businessman’s demise, the women meet in Nora’s cozy bookstore. And as they untangle a web of corruption, they also discover their own courage, purpose, and a sisterhood that will carry them through every challenge—proving it’s never too late to turn the page and start over . . .

Meh. After finishing this book, that’s my reaction. Just meh. It was a decent attempt at a cozy mystery, but everything really fell flat for me. I disliked the writing style (it felt very immature at times). The tone was all over the place but definitely too serious in parts. I couldn’t really figure out the motivations of the main characters in solving the murder (why did they care so much?). I felt like the murder mystery was really an afterthought to the main plot of the book. Finally, the book references felt very shoe-horned into the pages. They just didn’t land with me. I don’t think I will be picking up the second in the series.

Lumberjanes Vol. 9, 10, and 11

Title: Lumberjanes Vol. 9:

Author: Shannon Watters, Kate Levh, Noelle Stevenson, Grace Ellis, Brooke Allen, Maarta Laiho, Carey Pietsch

Publisher: BOOM! 2018

Genre: Graphic Novel

Pages: 112

Rating: 5/5 stars

Reading Challenges:

When the Yetis are kicked out of their treehouse, it’s up to the Roanokes to win their home back from the Sasquatches that took it over by beating them at roller derby.

You just gotta learn to roll with the punches! When the yetis are kicked out of their humble treehouse abode, it’s up to Jo, April, Mal, Molly and Ripley to get them back where they belong amongst the trees...and not leeching the camp’s power and making all the ice cream melt. To get the sasquatches to clear out, though, the Roanoke girls will have to challenge them to a roller derby match!

Another fun adventure with the campers of Roanoke cabin! I loved the little story at the beginning involving Diana and Barney. But the real action is definitely the roller derby fun.

Yetis, greek gods and grootslangs are old news to the Roanoke cabin but now the Lumberjanes face their most harrowing experience yet: their parents! It’s PARENTS’ DAY at the camp, and with all the fun they’ve been having, the Lumberjanes realize that maybe their parents might not understand! Now the Lumberjanes must try to keep their parents away from the supernatural, even as a mysterious force tries to intervene!

Oooohhh this volume was lots of fun! I loved seeing all the parents and getting a new adversary for the Lumberjanes. Super excited to see what happens next!

Time is freezing at camp, and it’s up to Roanoke Cabin to stop the nefarious and mysterious forces behind it.

When Molly makes a deal with a mysterious Voice in the woods surrounding Miss Qiunzella Thiskwin Penniquiqul Thistle Crumpet’s Camp for Hardcore Lady Types to slow down time, she isn’t hoping for an endless summer! All she wants is more time to spend with her friends at camp, hiking and doing crafts, and playing music and having fun. What she doesn’t bargain for is time starting to skip, and freeze, and make campers’ ages jump forward and back… It’s up to Roanoke Cabin to to set time right again, and save camp!

Finally we get more information (well sorta) about the mysterious thing in the woods. I'm so excited to learn more about what it going on in the forest. And the sentries were an interesting touch.

Reading: Vox by Christina Dalcher. It’s the Girly Book Club selection for March. About 1/2 through and I’m not loving it at all…

Watching: Just about to pull up last night’s episode of The Bachelor. Now that spoilers have been posted, I’m having a hard time staying away.

Listening: Lots of NPR Politics podcasts to catch up on this week.

Making: Pulled pork for dinner tonight. I went easy for today…

Feeling: So so tired. Quentin has been sick this week (a cold) and he’s been waking up in the middle of the night a lot. I’m just so tired today.

Planning: Trying to get the next house projects in line. I want to prep and paint the craft and library room so I can actually use that space. Beyond that, I need to think what to do next.

Loving: I spent yesterday afternoon organizing the hall linen close and the master bathroom closet. They are so organized and pretty right now! We have way more closest space than stuff, but it wasn’t organized yet. Now those spaces really make me happy.

Life Right Now #8

As I look outside my window: I see all the squirrels that love our collective backyards here. So much to watch…

Right now I am: Enjoying the view from our new house’s breakfast nook while I prepare to leave for my birthday day out. I have a big day of pampering planned including a massage, good lunch, book store browsing, and of course ice cream!

Thinking and pondering: Which house project to get started next? I may need to make a master list to help me decide.

On my bedside table: The Secret, Book, and Scone Society by Ellery Adams; Vox by Christina Dalcher

On my tv this week: Nothing actually. We’ve been TV all week while moving.

Listening to: Dungeons and Daddies. I’m finally completely caught up and current. Woot!

On the menu for this week:

  • Monday - Pulled Pork Sandwiches

  • Tuesday - Maple Bourbon Pecan Chicken

  • Wednesday - Maafe (West African Peanut Stew)

  • Thursday - Leftovers

  • Friday - Cheesy Artichoke Pasta

  • Saturday - Caribbean Salmon Quinoa Bowls

  • Sunday - Chicken Pot Pie

On my to do list: Oh so much! I want to prep my library/craft room for painting, finish getting the kitchen counters cleaned off, and ditto the living room furniture. I also need to place my Ikea order so other items can get here and be put away. And I’m sure I have lots of other little things to finish.

Happening this week: I have absolutely nothing planned for this week… It don’t think this has ever happened. To be fair, I left it pretty wide open because I thought that this would be the week we moved. I’m certain Q and I will be able to fill our days with house projects, errands, and a few activities.

My simple pleasures: A few minutes to read while sitting in my new chaise lounge chair. It’s so incredibly comfy!

Looking around the house: Things are slowing starting to be put away correctly. Boxes are being thrown away, bins are being emptied, drawers, cabinets, and closets are being organized.

From the camera: Checking out the tapir at the zoo this week.

An Unkindness of Ghosts by Rivers Solomon

Title: An Unkindness of Ghosts

Author: Rivers Solomon

Publisher: Akashic Books 2017

Genre: Science Fiction

Pages: 340

Rating: 5/5 stars

Reading Challenges: Library; Monthly Theme

Aster has little to offer folks in the way of rebuttal when they call her ogre and freak. She's used to the names; she only wishes there was more truth to them. If she were truly a monster, she'd be powerful enough to tear down the walls around her until nothing remains of her world.

Aster lives in the lowdeck slums of the HSS Matilda, a space vessel organized much like the antebellum South. For generations, Matilda has ferried the last of humanity to a mythical Promised Land. On its way, the ship's leaders have imposed harsh moral restrictions and deep indignities on dark-skinned sharecroppers like Aster. Embroiled in a grudge with a brutal overseer, Aster learns there may be a way to improve her lot--if she's willing to sow the seeds of civil war.

This book has been on my radar for awhile but I somehow never picked it up. I decided to add it to my short list for February and immediately started reading after finishing Kindred. The two books ended up being a great pairing. Both deal with racial issues by using science fiction to highlight the problems. I loved reading Kindred that mainly dealt in the past and how it relates to the modern, but this book took it further in dealing in the future to highlight the present. Plus we get commentary on power structures, gender divides, trans issues, class issues, and even education and knowledge. There are so many layers to this book! There are so many different topics being addressed that I don’t think I caught everything. I may have to reread this book in a few years. Beyond all the interesting topics, we get a great fast-paced plot centering on Aster’s uncovering the meaning behind her mother’s suicide and the overall mystery of the ship and where it’s headed. I was definitely along for the ride! I even loved the ending. I’m still thinking on many of the issues highlighted days later. So good!

2020 Soups and Stews from Around the World - January and February

Week 1: Poronkaristys from Finland

Basically this recipe was reindeer stew over homemade mashed potatoes with a side of lingonberry jam (we subbed with cranberry jam as the store was out of lingonberry jam). The combination of salty and sweet was perfect! We really enjoyed this dish! The original used a reindeer roast, but those are incredibly hard to find. We went with reindeer sausage and I think it tasted really good.

Recipe used from The Food Dictator

Week 2: Chorizo and Black Bean Soup from Venezuela

This one was a dud for us. Somehow it managed to be both too dry and wet at the same time. I could probably switch out the chorizo and beans to help it along, but we decided the flavors in the broth weren’t amazing anyway.

Recipe used from Closet Cooking

Week 3: Sega Wat from Ethiopia

This was so incredibly delicious! It’s definitely going into our Top 10 of the year and the regular rotation in Paprika. It might even take the top stop. I added more spice than listed in the recipe and so glad I did! This was so incredibly flavorful and full of spice. Those hard boiled eggs and the injera on the side elevated the dish so much. (Full disclosure: We bought the injera from an Ethiopian restaurant in town.)

Recipe used from The Daring Gourmet

Week 4: Jani Me Fasule from Albania

Another dud. This turned into a pastey mess with little flavor. Definitely didn’t want a second helping.

Week 5: Meatball and Couscous Soup from Morocco

Decent recipe but not amazing. I might try and make this again, but add more spice mix to the meatballs and kick up the broth a bit.

Recipe used from Little Spice Jar

Week 6: Mince Stew from New Zealand

Ehhh…. not amazing. This was like a lesser version of my sloppy joes.

Recipe used from All Recipes

Week 7: Asam Pedas (Spicy Tamarind Fish Stew) from Malaysia

This was very interesting… I loved the flavors but not the complete execution. I definitely want to try making this one again with some minor tweaks. All the ingredients besides the fish needed to be in smaller chunks and maybe simmered longer on the stove before spooning over rice. But it was good and we enjoyed eating it as is.

Kindred by Octavia Butler

Title: Kindred

Author: Octavia Butler

Publisher: 1979

Genre: Science Fiction

Pages: 287

Rating: 4/5 stars

Reading Challenges: Library; Monthly Theme - February

Dana, a modern black woman, is celebrating her twenty-sixth birthday with her new husband when she is snatched abruptly from her home in California and transported to the antebellum South. Rufus, the white son of a plantation owner, is drowning, and Dana has been summoned to save him. Dana is drawn back repeatedly through time to the slave quarters, and each time the stay grows longer, more arduous, and more dangerous until it is uncertain whether or not Dana's life will end, long before it has a chance to begin.

Such a powerful story! I’ve been meaning to read this one for years, but it kept getting shoved down my TBR pile. Finally picked it up and sped through it. It’s a fast paced plot with great characters. But more importantly, the book dives into very hard situations and questions what’s right and wrong in any given situation. I really found Dana’s inner turmoil over her place both in the 1800s and in 1976 challenging. The passages detailing violence were very difficult to read but important to confront past (and sometimes current) injustices. Even though the book was written 40 years, the topics touched upon feel very relevant to today.

The Night Country by Melissa Albert

51i6-CdBR0L._SY346_.jpg

Title: The Night Country (Hazel Wood #2)

Author: Melissa Albert

Publisher: Flatiron Books 2020

Genre: YA Fantasy

Pages: 352

Rating: 5/5 stars

Reading Challenges: Library

In The Night Country, Alice Proserpine dives back into a menacing, mesmerizing world of dark fairy tales and hidden doors of The Hazel Wood. Follow her and Ellery Finch as they learn The Hazel Wood was just the beginning, and that worlds die not with a whimper, but a bang.

With Finch’s help, Alice escaped the Hinterland and her reclusive grandmother’s dark legacy. Now she and the rest of the dregs of the fairy tale world have washed up in New York City, where Alice is trying to make a new, unmagical life. But something is stalking the Hinterland’s survivors—and she suspects their deaths may have a darker purpose. Meanwhile, in the winking out world of the Hinterland, Finch seeks his own adventure, and—if he can find it—a way back home...

Oh Yes! We finally get a followup to The Hazel Wood! I loved diving back into the world of the weird and the wonderful even if most of the story was set in New York City. I always gravitate to the slightly dark fantasy stories and this is no exception. Alice is good character, but I was really here for Ellery’s story. Oh so good! I’m glad we got answers to a lot of the questions posed in the first book. I look forward to next year’s release of Hinterland tales. It’s going to be oh so good!

UnRead Shelf Plans

For March, the prompt is the book that’s been on your unread shelf the longest. That would probably be 1776 by David McCullough.

Movies watched

  • The Spy Who Dumped Me - This was much funnier than I thought it was going to be.

  • Knives Out - Oh so good! Loved this one.

  • Jojo Rabbit - Very touching movie.

TV Shows watched

  • Decline and Fall S1 - We love our Jack Whitehall.

  • Doctor Who S12 - So close to the end of the season!

  • Broadchurch S1 - We finished the first season finally. Oh so intense!

  • The Magicians S5 - This season has been so good so far.

  • Outlander S2 - I finally restarted this season. I will finish it at some point.

  • Last Week Tonight S7 - Yeah! John Oliver is back!

Comments - It was a weird month with prepping to move houses, but I ended up reading 15 books. Decent showing… Next month I need to do some clean up of the books I meant to read in January and February.
