Winter Bucket List Update #1

Winter Bucket.png

Christmas is over! Time to jump into the bleak season of winter here in the Midwest. This list was a bit of a struggle to create due to the weather constraints, but I think I’ve come up with some goodies.

  1. Read 45 books (in progress) — I’m up to 17 books so far this year.

  2. Eat at 5 new-to-me restaurants

  3. Go sledding

  4. Attend a hockey game

  5. Attend two theater performances

  6. Bake some bread ✓ — I made a long of Hungarian White Bread with Fennel for one of our grilled cheese nights. Very yummy!

  7. Make winter crafts

  8. Create a table centerpiece ✓ - Nothing super special, but I did buy some flowers and arrange my center table tray.

  9. Get our fireplace working

  10. Movie Month January (in progress)

  11. Weekly Game Day/Night with Arthur (in progress) — Arthur got a few card games for Christmas. We’re currently enjoying Go Fish.

  12. Make Valentine’s

  13. Try 3 new hot chocolate recipes/mixes

  14. Visit two new-to-the-boys museums

  15. Have an indoor picnic.

  16. Swim at the gym 5 times

  17. Host a tea party!

  18. Make a snow globe

  19. Make a seasonal door hanger/wreath

  20. Complete a jigsaw puzzle ✓

  21. Find a great coffee shop for me!

  22. Spend an afternoon at a local bookstore

  23. Buy some new cozy pajamas

  24. Explore an area of Omaha

  25. Travel to Indiana for Nick and Alex’s 16th Birthday!

Life Right Now #1

On my bedside table: Whiskey in a Teacup by Reese Witherspoon; Code Girls by Liza Mundy

On my TV: The Good Place S3; Letterkenny S2; Riverdale S2; Lots of movies for January Movie Month

Listening to: Catching up on some podcasts, specifically Reading Glasses, Apocalist Book Club, NPR Politics, Pod Save America, What Should I Read Next

On the menu:

  • Monday - Honey Garlic Salmon

  • Tuesday - Leftovers

  • Wednesday - BLT Grilled Cheese

  • Thursday - Hawaiian Pulled Pork Nachos

  • Friday - Broccoli Beef

  • Saturday - Pesto Stuffed Shells

  • Sunday - Kielbasa Skillet

On my to do list: Insurance and driver’s license. Those are my two big tasks for this coming week. Not looking forward to it at all.

Happening this week: Beside the usual preschool, errands, and Romp n Roll Classes, I have a couple of card classes scheduled. Let’s see if anyone actually comes.

What I am creating: Working on some card kits for a friend’s retreat in March. I’ve got my design down, just need to get cutting and putting kits together.

My simple pleasures: When the kids are not crying. Seriously, it’s been a rough couple of days around here. I would really love some peace and quiet for a few minutes.

What I’m planning: Looking at March’s activities and travels. I should get started on that. Also, a friend and I need to look into hotels for April’s Stampin’ Up! conference.

Looking around the house: Argh! We’ve had multiple light bulbs go in the past week. Still need to replace the ones in the TV room. The installed lighting in this house isn’t great.

Looking forward to: Finishing my current read (The Fifth Season); so very good!

From the camera: Apparently we needed ice cream on this ridiculously cold day.

Reading Challenges: Finishing the Series

Max, Leon and Matthew - together at last for Christmas at St Mary's - a time of conspicuous consumption, riotous misbehaviour and the traditional illegal Christmas jump. And this time, it's inter-generational.

Donning her unfamiliar mother hat, Max takes Matthew back to 19th century London, where they plan to deliver a parcel of Christmas cheer to his former friends, but find themselves confronting the terrifying Old Ma Scrope in the process.

'Tis the season to be jolly.

It's also the season of goodwill towards all mankind.

Pity no one told Max.

Oh my! This short story brought me to tears. I loved that this story focused on Max and Matthew. I loved that we got to see more personality from him. And we get to visit a new time period for the historians. Loved this one so much! Plus the ending was priceless.

The Wife Between Us by Greer Hendricks and Sarah Pekkanen

Title: The Wife Between Us

Author: Greer Hendricks and Sarah Pekkanen

Publisher: St. Martin’s Press 2018

Genre: Fiction

Pages: 352

Rating: 3/5 stars

Reading Challenges: Library Love; Popsugar - Two Female Authors

When you read this book, you will make many assumptions.
You will assume you are reading about a jealous ex-wife.
You will assume she is obsessed with her replacement – a beautiful, younger woman who is about to marry the man they both love.
You will assume you know the anatomy of this tangled love triangle.
Assume nothing.

Twisted and deliciously chilling, Greer Hendricks and Sarah Pekkanen's The Wife Between Us exposes the secret complexities of an enviable marriage - and the dangerous truths we ignore in the name of love.

Read between the lies.

One of the book club selections for January. This one definitely kept my attention in terms of wanting to find out what happened. I sped through to the ending. Immediately I was interested in Vanessa’s story as well as Nellie’s story. I had sympathetic thoughts towards each women through the first half of the book.. And the twist happened and I was slightly disappointed, but stuck with it. I still wanted to see how the story played out. And then the coincidences and twists kept coming and I started to lose interest. I don’t mind a twist, but there were just too many in this book. And the whole reveal from Emma and her origin family just made me want to put the book down. No thank you. Too much.

Winter Storms by Elin Hilderbrand

Title: Winter Storms (Winter #3)

Author: Elin Hilderbrand

Publisher: Little, Brown and Company 2016

Genre: Romance

Pages: 246

Stars: 4/5 stars

Reading Challenges: Library Love; Finishing the Series; Seasonal Series - Series Completely Published

Some of the stormy weather of the past few seasons seems to have finally lifted for the Quinns. After a year apart, and an ill-fated affair with the Winter Street Inn's old Santa Claus, Mitzi has returned to rule the roost; Patrick is about to be released from prison; Kevin has a successful new business and is finally ready to tie the knot with Isabelle; and best of all, there's hopeful news about Bart, who has been captured by enemy forces in Afghanistan.

That doesn't mean there aren't a few dark clouds on the horizon. Kelley has recently survived a health scare; Jennifer can't quite shake her addiction to the drugs she used as a crutch while Patrick was in jail; and Ava still can't decide between the two lovers that she's been juggling with limited success. However, if there's one holiday that brings the Quinn family together to give thanks for the good times, it's Christmas. And this year promises to be a celebration unlike any other as the Quinns prepare to host Kevin and Isabelle's wedding at the inn. But as the special day approaches, a historic once-in-a-century blizzard bears down on Nantucket, threatening to keep the Quinns away from the place--and the people--they love most. Before the snow clears, the Quinns will have to survive enough upheavals to send anyone running for the spiked eggnog, in this touching novel that proves that when the holidays roll around, you can always go home again.

Still enjoying this series a lot. I loved checking back in with the Quinns after the tumultuous events of the last volume. We finally get more of Bart’s story and even a bit more of Norah (turns out she’s actually an interesting character). I loved the big events of this book and seeing the happy moments. I’m still annoyed with Ava, or I should say that I was very annoyed with her until about halfway through the book. Finally, we get to see some growth from her! I can’t wait to dive into the final book in the series.

P.S. It was very weird for Hilderbrand to namedrop herself and another of her books during the scene of Isabelle’s bridal shower. I seriously had to reread the paragraph, but yep it was there…

Title: The Ideal Wife (Stapleton-Downes #1; Dark Angel #5)

Author: Mary Balogh

Publisher: 1991

Genre: Romance

Pages: 339

Rating: 5/5 stars

Reading Challenges: UnRead Shelf; Finishing the Series; Romance

When Abigail Gardiner knocks at the door of Miles Ripley, Earl of Severn, the last thing she expects is a marriage proposal. Desperate, she’d come to this charismatic stranger’s home to plead for her future. Instead she shocks them both by saying yes. Her impulsive decision will have consequences neither she nor her new husband can foresee. For Miles has his own reasons for marrying her. And Abigail is harboring a secret of her own. As distrust gives way to desire . . . as, together, they give in to the pleasures of the marriage bed, a devastating scandal threatens their future. Now these two wary hearts will risk ruin and disgrace for a love that has changed them both forever—the kind all seek, but few ever find

I might be reading the Dark Angel series out of order, but this was written first, so I’m starting here… Also, it’s been on my book shelves for a few years now. Time to read and get rid of it.

I loved this story! Abby and Miles are such great characters. The plot uses a common trope in Regency romances, but I loved how the story evolved from there. We get to know the two main characters very well in just a short amount of time. I loved see how Abby and Miles grew both in their own person and within their marriage. Seriously loved it!

Odds and Ends

Odds and Ends.png

Here's my randomness for the week:

  • My amazing plan to take Quentin to the gym pool on Wednesday was thwarted by an epic 40 minute tantrum. Maybe next week. Le sigh.

  • Speaking of, I’m really craving some gym time (last time was Sunday morning). I am willing to go at 7pm, but I really hope we can find another earlier time that works.

  • January’s reads are turning out to be a mixed bag. Some great. Lots of middling reads.

  • Digging some Regency romance and cozy mysteries this week.

  • On the other hand, January movie month is going much better. Some great movies so far!

  • Attempting to navigate the Nebraska DMV site is giving me a headache.

  • I moved all the random crap so I can park in the garage again! (Just in time for Friday-Satruday’s storm) It’s a tight squeeze, but the van fits. I have to pull all the way in and pull in the mirrors. Fun fun!

  • Downloaded the Me and White Supremacy workbook from Layla F. Saad. Need to find some dedicated time to dive in, but looks very interesting.

For Max, what starts off as a perfectly normal week is about to degenerate into a quagmire of egotistical film producers, monumental pub crawls, unsigned contracts, exploding rocks, Professor Rapson and his megaphone, the world’s biggest bacon butty – and Angus – the third component of the most notorious love triangle since Menelaus, Paris and Whatshername – the one with the face they launched ships off.

Oh another great short story from the crew at St. Mary’s. I loved that was get more from Markham and the antics of the R&D department. But of course things get out of hand and something blows up. Loved it so much!

No one knows quite how, but Max and her baby are safe at last. No one knows quite how, but  Peterson has persuaded Dr Foster to marry him. No one knows quite how, but Markham's marital status remains unknown. Certainly no one knows quite how a twelve-foot-high teapot has mysteriously materialised on the South Lawn, but it has. But they do know that Clive Ronan is back. They do know that he hates them and that this time he has good cause. And they do know that he will bring death and destruction in his wake. Follow the disaster magnets of St Mary's from the Egyptian desert to the Battle of Stamford Bridge, and from Hastings to the Sack of Constantinople...

Oh my. This volume killed me, seriously killed me. I was devastated in the middle of the book and then even more devastated by the end. But don’t let that statement make you think that I didn’t like this book. I loved every single page of it. I have come to really feel like the characters of St. Mary’s are part of my friend circle. Plus this volume sees the historians finally visiting Hastings in 1066. Woohoo!

P.S. I also read the super short (i.e. 4 page) short story Desiccated Water featuring a science experiment gone wrong. And I read the other super short (i.e. 7 page) short story Markham and the Anal Probing right after reading this book. Oh so much fun!

I am at a loss of what to say about this volume. I was in tears and angry by the end, but it was amazing! The story has taken quite a turn in the last few issues and I’m truly afraid at where it’s going to end up. I am very sad that the creators are taking a long hiatus, but hopeful that they will come back and complete this story with an amazing ending!

Publisher: Del Rey 2011

Genre: Graphic Novel

Pages: 224

Rating: 3/5 stars

Reading Challenges: Graphic Novel

Diana Gabaldon’s brilliant storytelling has captivated millions of readers in her bestselling and award-winning Outlander saga. Now, in her first-ever graphic novel, Gabaldon gives readers a fresh look at the events of the original Outlander: Jamie Fraser’s side of the story, gorgeously rendered by artist Hoang Nguyen.

A bit of a disappointing read for me. I loved the first Outlander book and hoped this prequel comic would add to the series. Unfortunately I wasn’t a huge fan of the art style or how they portrayed some of the characters. I read it, but wasn’t really a favorite.

Coffee Talk by Morton Satin

Title: Coffee Talk: The Stimulating Story of the World’s Most Popular Brew

Author: Morton Satin

Publisher: Prometheus Books 2011

Genre: Nonfiction

Pages: 368

Rating: 3/5 stars

Reading Challenges: Library Love; Nonfiction Bingo

This entertaining yet comprehensive book describes how, in recent times, coffee has become the magnet that draws people together for spirited interchanges of information and ideas. In the intellectual capitals of the world, coffeehouses have been and continue to be the venues where the great minds flock to discuss the latest developments in the arts, sciences, and social philosophies. The author also traces the rich and intriguing history of coffee and even goes on to reveal the best techniques for home brewing. Moreover, he enlivens his narrative with stories of the fine art of the barista, which includes the World Barista Championship where rival barmen from around the globe display the highest artistry of coffee brewing. Lavishly illustrated, this delightful and informative book is the perfect complement for your next coffee break.

I had high hopes for this book. I had heard good things. Unfortunately the chapters in this book were a mixed bag. I loved learning about the history of coffee and the science behind the plant. My favorite part was following coffee around the world. A wonderful history. And then the chapters start to go down hill. There’s interesting content, but I didn’t particularly need an entire glossary of terms or a chapter detailing different ways to brew coffee. I start skimming the second half of the book until I got to the end. Oh well.

In the past: awful stuff. In the present: awful stuff. But, increasingly: answers. Collects THE WICKED + THE DIVINE #34-39

Seriously love this series! The twists and turns in this trade took me for a ride. I didn’t know what was going on and had to reread a few issues. But seriously in a good way. It was such a great volume. The two years are almost up and I’m waiting on pins and needles to find out how it’s going to end.

January Movie Month Update #1

A few years back, we used to celebrate the new year by watching a month of movies. We decided to resurrect the idea for 2019. I went through a huge list of movies and made a slightly shorter list for us to pull from every night. There’s a little bit of everything on the list. Let’s see what we watched:

#1 Snowpiercer — Been on our list for a long time. Very intense. Good, but intense.

#2 True Grit (1969) — J had me watch the newer version last year and I loved it. The original is also really good. Although every once in a while a scene was played very strangely, but I have to remember it was made in 1969.

#3 The House with a Clock in Its Walls — For a family adventure movie (slightly spooky), I loved this one. I need to read the book!

#4 Ocean’s Eight — Eh. Not great. Not terrible. Just okay.

#5 Isle of Dogs — Gorgeous looking. A lovely nod to Kurosawa. Typical Wes Anderson weirdness.

#6 Picnic at Hanging Rock (1975) — Very atmospheric. Definitely stripped out many of the extraneous scenes from the book. Now I want to watch the documentary about the making of…

#7 Kung Pow: Enter the Fist — J’s stupid movie choice. So dumb. And yet I laughed a lot.

#8 Venom — Better than I thought it was going to be. I loved the little bits of banter between Eddie and Venom.

#9 Quartermass II — Really enjoyed the first one. This one was also interesting.

Author: Kate Morton

Publisher: Atria 2018

Genre: Fiction

Pages: 485

Rating: 5/5 stars

Reading Challenges: UnRead Shelf; Women Authors; Dancing with SciFi and Fantasy - Ghosts

In the summer of 1862, a group of young artists led by the passionate and talented Edward Radcliffe descends upon Birchwood Manor on the banks of the Upper Thames. Their plan: to spend a secluded summer month in a haze of inspiration and creativity. But by the time their stay is over, one woman has been shot dead while another has disappeared; a priceless heirloom is missing; and Edward Radcliffe's life is in ruins.

Over one hundred and fifty years later, Elodie Winslow, a young archivist in London, uncovers a leather satchel containing two seemingly unrelated items: a sepia photograph of an arresting-looking woman in Victorian clothing, and an artist's sketchbook containing the drawing of a twin-gabled house on the bend of a river.

Why does Birchwood Manor feel so familiar to Elodie? And who is the beautiful woman in the photograph? Will she ever give up her secrets?

I’ve enjoyed a few of Morton’s previous works, so I had to have this one when it came up for Book of the Month last October. I finally picked it up to dive in last week and immediately fell into another world. I love how Morton creates an entire atmosphere surrounding her setting. The house is just fantastic and beautiful and mysterious and enchanting. I love how Morton connects all the different characters and ad time periods to create one epic story. The murder mystery was actually one fo the least interesting aspects. I really wanted to hear more about many of the other characters like Ada and Leonard. In fact, I think Ada was my favorite character. Overall, I took my time with this book and loved every page of it.

  3. In the general sections you can use both fantasy and sci-fi books but not other genres.

  4. Graphic novels, comics, audiobooks and novella’s are allowed. It is all reading in my book.

  6. You can move the books around throughout the year if things fit better elsewhere and all.

  7. You can step into this reading challenge at any point. I’m starting it in January 2019 but in reality this is a reading challenge you can fit for yourself in anyway you like. If you want to start in May and end April the year after, that is totally fine.
