Stardust by Neil Gaiman

Title: Stardust

Author: Neil Gaiman

Publisher: HarperCollins 1997

Genre: Fantasy

Pages: 250

Rating:  4/5 stars  Movie:   5/5 stars

Reading Challenges: Neil Gaiman; ebook; Blogger Recommendations; Book to Movie

How I Got It: iPad read

Among the wondrous, beautiful, and strange literary offspring conceived by Sandman creator, multi-award winner, and #1 New York Times bestselling author Neil Gaiman, his magical 1997 fantasy novel, Stardust, remains a top favorite. An enchanting adult fairy tale about a young man who travels beyond the boundaries of his small village to find a fallen star and win the heart of the woman he loves—the basis for the hit motion picture starring Michelle Pfeiffer, Sienna Miller, Claire Danes, and Robert DeNiro.

One of those "I saw the movie before reading the book" books...  Even with loving the movie, I really enjoyed the book.  I don't think it's Gaiman's best offering, but it's a nice little action adventure love story.  At many times, I wanted to slap Tristran, but maybe that's just me.  The book has a great fantastical world in Faerie.  Loved the setting, even if some of the characters annoyed me.

Movie Review:

Don't get me wrong, I love Gaiman's writing, but the movie version is just amazing and gorgeous.  The sets are to die for.  The actors are way too gorgeous.  I even liked the changes they made to the storyline.  Somehow the changes don't make me cringe.  They make the story different, but a good different.  I am such a fan of this movie.

Top Ten Tuesday -- Fave Pre-Blogging Books

Top Ten Tuesday is an original feature/weekly meme created at The Broke and the Bookish. Each week we will post a new Top Ten list complete with one of our bloggers’ answers. Everyone is welcome to join.  If you can’t come up with ten, don’t worry about it—post as many as you can!

This is a really hard topic.  I can only think of I few books.  I know there are more, but these are my absolute favorites, my rereads, my go to books.

1. Lewis Carroll's Alice's Adventures in Wonderland

2. Novels of Jane Austen -- Or the ones I haven't reread and reviewed on my blog so far.  That is Pride and Prejudice and Emma.

3. The Host by Stephenie Meyer -- I will be rereading this one during this month. I hope to finish in time to see the movie in theaters.  I am intrigued...

4. The Awakening by Kate Chopin -- My all time favorite.  I think it's about time for a reread...

Pregnancy Journal -- First Trimester

I'm starting a pregnancy journal to chronicle the ups and downs of trying to have another child.  This post is a large wrap-up for my first trimester.  I just revealed my pregnancy last week, so I guess this is my big post.  I'm going to try and keep the pregnancy info to a minimum but still making sure to share.

February 8th

We've been trying to conceive since last October, but nothing had come of it.  I didn't want to stress too much, so we weren't really tracking ovulation.  It was more-or-less just a go-with-the-flow attempt.  I was getting a bit frustrated that I wasn't pregnant yet.  Last time, I conceived less than two months after starting to try.  This time it took a little more than 3 months.  I was hoping to be pregnant before Christmas, but nothing.  About a week ago, I started feeling odd.  I was still a few days from my period, but took a test anyway.  It was one of those "one control line, another line for pregnant."  I had one and half lines.  Weird!  I took a pregnancy test today as my period was supposed to start on the 5th.  It's a positive positive positive!  This is super exciting, but at the same time I am scared to death.  My miscarriage happened at 11 weeks after multiple appointments and ultrasounds where everything was just perfect.

After taking the test, I immediately told Josh, but we kept our excitement to basically nothing.  I also informed my mom and called to make an appointment (Feb. 26th was the earliest available).  So I guess I have to wait until then to see what's actually going on...

February 16th -- 6 weeks along

I am exhausted!  I don't remember being this tired with the boys or with the last pregnancy.  Every fiber of my body is tired constantly.  I feel a bit better after eating, but not a huge amount.  I lay down to sleep, but sleep does not come.  As tired as I am, I have insomnia. I also have almost constant headaches.  These seem to be similar to last time.  Lastly, I have lots of gas and stomach pains.  The baby sites say that constipation and gas are very common symptoms.  I've never had to deal with that before, but it seems to be a big symptom this time.  I haven't had much nausea, but haven't ruled that out coming soon.  I hope some of these symptoms clear up in the next few weeks.

As to my general feelings, this pregnancy doesn't seem real at all.  I intellectually know I'm pregnant, but I feel nothing.  I think I've put myself in this mindset because of the previous miscarriage.  Every time I go to the bathroom, I look for blood.  I take most symptoms as the beginnings of another miscarriage.  I don't think I'll be completely involved until after 12 weeks.  I have to make it past the previous pregnancy's end.  Josh knows of course.  But the only other person who knows is mom and she's been sworn to secrecy.  I have given her orders to keep quiet until at least 12 weeks.  Once I feel more confident about getting to the end, I will announce to others.  I just feel too uncomfortable at the prospect of dealing with others in the case of another miscarriage.

February 18th

The nausea has begun! (cue dramatic music)  I have been hit with all day nausea for two days now.  It only abates during and right after eating.  And I am constantly hungry.  Nausea and hunger at the same time is a odd feeling.  Josh doesn't get my crazy, but has been dutifully supplying me with food.  I'm also starting to get some food aversions. Anything too cooked/greasy makes me extra queasy.  I've been gravitating towards lots of Thai and Japanese dishes with rice and sandwiches.  While pregnant with the boys I basically ate salads and Subway for nine months.  I don't really want that to be same this time, but it may be starting.  Who knows?  I could also lose all nausea in a few weeks and be perfectly fine.  Pregnancies are tricky things.  I blame the fickle nature of the growing parasite.

February 23rd

The nausea has not let up.  In fact, it's gotten worse in the past week.  I've tried many things, but nothing seems to work well.  I finally broke down and took a Zofran (left over from my miscarriage and surgery).  The medication helped somewhat, but only to take the edge off.  The past two nights I've gotten a bit more consistent sleep.  But I still have issues of getting to sleep.  My first appointment is in three days.  I can't wait to get some reassurances/clarifications.  I'm just so worried about what the scans will find.  Mom says that the nausea and other symptoms are a good sign.  Looking back, I was very sick with the boys and hardly at all with the last pregnancy.  Maybe there's something to the sickness theory.  I hope so...  else this just sucks.

February 26th

I had my first prenatal appointment today.  I was nervous, but thankfully my doctor is just amazing and reassured all my fears and doubts.  After the requisite general questions, we got on to the business of an ultrasound.  A few tense moments later, the doctor proclaimed everything looking great.  By his calculations, I am 7 weeks along.  My due date is October 15th.  I have another appointment scheduled for March 25th and the required pregnancy class on March 13th.  Right after, I made sure to let mom know, but she's sworn to secrecy until after my next appointment.

March 11th

I had a glass of wine last night.  Oh how I miss it!

March 13th

I had my prenatal class today.  For the most part they just reiterate what's in the informational booklet.  Pretty boring...  But they do order your labs.  So I went downstairs to get my blood drawn and they couldn't find a vein.  It happens every time.  The lab tech finally settled for a vein in my hand.  Ouch!  Of course, the blood took forever to come out.  In that eternity, I started to lose it.  I almost passed out right there in the lab.  I have a huge aversion to needles, but they was extreme even for me.  I'm thinking it was combination of my phobia and low blood sugar.  With the ongoing nausea I find it hard to eat at any regular times.  This morning my nausea was horrid and I didn't really eat breakfast.  Hence, problems.  At least I don't have to do more blood tests until the second trimester.

April 8th

I've made to the end of the first trimester.  Woohoo!  I've made it to the next stage.  The nausea is still here, but it has been lessening over the last two weeks.  Last week I had my 11-14 week checkup.  The doctor did an extra ultrasound to calm my fears of another miscarriage.  Everything looked amazing and was growing perfectly.  I won't be back to the doctor until May 21st (for the big ultrasound!).  Looking forward to the second trimester and more energy.

Music Monday -- 101 Get Up and Dance Edition

As part of my ongoing Day Zero Project, I've made a list of my favorite 101 songs of all time.  To help cut down on the possibilities, I took songs only from my iTunes account.  Each edition will include ~5 songs with a theme.  Enjoy!

Gorillaz "Dare" -- The boys really enjoy this song while driving in the car.  Great beat!

Arctic Monkeys "I Bet You Look Good" -- Love the Arctic Monkeys and this song gets me moving every time.  Two different live versions for you to enjoy!

The Killers "Somebody Told Me" -- I was working at Best Buy when this was released and it was constantly on rotation in the store.  Every time it came on, all the cashiers started dancing.  Plus, they were awesome in concert.  The live video sounds like what I heard when I saw them this past December.

Sunday Sunset #13

Overall, a not very exciting week.  I did a ton of things with the boys, but nothing crazy or out of the ordinary.  Just spent time with Indiana people.  I do have a big announcement for the week:  I am pregnant!  I wanted to wait until I made it past the danger zone (because of last time) and to tell my family first.  I'm feeling very blech, but it seems to be getting better.  I just can't believe how tired I get...  Oh well, it's the price of growing another human.  Updates will follow.

Listening To: Local radio...  I completely forgot how much I hate regular (non-satellite) radio.  Unfortunately that's all we listen to in the car.  Blah!  I need my Alt Nation back.

Book finished: Kitchen Confidential

Reading: A Clash of Kings; Stardust

On the Nightstand: P.S. I Love You by Cecelia Ahern, The Secret Garden by Frances Hodgson Burnett

Making Lists: Starting my Amazon baby registry.  Lots of basics and gender neutral stuff.

On the Web: I am completely obsessed with The Lizzie Bennet Diaries.  I know, late to the party...  but they are so amazing.  I have been marathoning through them this past week.  I finally reached the end on Friday and immediately wanted to go back and start it again.  Amazing!

Watching: The boys and I saw Oz while I was in Indiana.  I really enjoyed it, but thankful that I opted for the 2D version instead of 3D.

From Nature: It wasn't as cold in Indiana as I thought it would be.  We had decent weather, even some sunshine.  I lucked out.

Shopping Scores: The local Archiver's is closing so I took advantage of their storewide 25% off sale.  I snapped up a paper pack, some Washi tape, a cute dates stamp set, and some jewels.  I didn't go crazy but made sure to grab some supplies I can always use.

Now I'm off to drop the boys at their dad's and visit the casino with mom.  You'll find me reading my iPad by the horse track...

Kitchen Confidential by Anthony Bourdain

Title: Kitchen Confidential

Author: Anthony Bourdain

Publisher: HarperCollins 2007

Genre: Memoir

Pages: 486

Rating: 5/5 stars

Reading Challenges: Nerdy Nonfiction -- Food; ebook; Blogger Recommendations; 52 Books -- W14

How I Got It: iPad read

A New York City chef who is also a novelist recounts his experiences in the restaurant business, and exposes abuses of power, sexual promiscuity, drug use, and other secrets of life behind kitchen doors.

This is one of those "I've been meaning to read this forever" books.  I enjoy watching No Reservations.  I love Bourdain's style.  I even saw a few of the episodes of the television series based on the book (starring Bradley Cooper pre-super stardom).  And yet I never read the book.  A long plane ride to Indiana was the perfect time to correct that oversight.

Overall, I really enjoyed this book.  It's part memoir, part tell-all, part guidebook.  We see the world of restaurants from the inside, but often with a very particular perspective.  I loved meeting the crazy characters in each restaurant and kitchen.  I loved hearing about his journey from royal screw-up to famous and respected chef.  The book is loud and crude, just like Bourdain himself.  But to clean up his writing would destroy the essence of the story.  While I may not have known all the food words, I loved hearing about the creation of good food.  I love good food, and am willing to try just about anything.  I love Bourdain's philosophy of quality ingredients instead of fancy presentation.  I have a feeling I would love eating at any restaurant he cheffed at.  My only issue with the book: it made me hungry!  Reading about all this amazing food, I was constantly craving something!

FF #7: Summer in Cali

Summer in Cali

I love the freshness of this outfit.  Summer in my part of California is warm, but not scorchingly hot.  We love our layers around here.  The pants look so comfortable.  The sweater is the perfect layering element in case the temp drops a bit.  And I especially love the combo of mint and pink.  It adds some great color pops for the eye.

Top Ten Tuesday -- Crushing of Fictional Characters

Top Ten Tuesday is an original feature/weekly meme created at The Broke and the Bookish. Each week we will post a new Top Ten list complete with one of our bloggers’ answers. Everyone is welcome to join.  If you can’t come up with ten, don’t worry about it—post as many as you can!

Loving this topic today.  I choosing based on my love of the characters.  I didn't pay much attention to age.  If the character is a teen, I aged them up in my head.  Okay...  now that that's out of the way.  Here's my list:

1. Lord Maccon from Gail Carriger's Soulless series -- As the rugged handsome warrior crush

2. Robb Stark from George Martin's Song of Fire and Ice series -- As the rugged handsome almost warrior crush

3. Shaun Mason from Mira Grant's Newsflesh series -- As the zombie killing warrior crush

4. Dodge from Frank Beddor's Looking Glass Wars series -- As the boy next door warrior crush

5. Arthur Dent from Douglas Adams' Hitchhiker's Guide series -- As the ordinary, but hilarious, boy next door crush

6. Constantine from Robin McKinley's Sunshine -- As the way to mysterious and sexy crush

7. Cas Lowood from Kendare Blake's Anna Dressed in Blood series -- As the persistent lovelorn warrior crush

8. Lewis from Rachel Caine's Weather Wardens series -- As the powerful mysterious crush

9. Percy Jackson from Rick Riordan's series -- As the hilarious warrior crush

10. Puck from Julie Kagawa's Iron Fey series -- As the hilarious mysterious crush

I think I have a thing for the warrior type.  Or maybe it's the books I've been reading lately.

Music Monday -- "Across the Universe"

Something a bit different for Music Monday today.  Instead of a single song or a group of songs for 101 Faves, I decide to feature the music of Across the Universe.  If you've never seen it, Across the Universe is a movie musical based on the music of The Beatles.  I love these covers so much.  In fact, I think the cover of "I've Just Seen a Face" is better than the original.  Here are some of my favorites from the movie.

I've Just Seen a Face:

With a Little Help from My Friends:
