Spring 2012 Dewey Readathon -- Starting Line

The original plan was that J would be in San Jose until tomorrow.  So I would be free to read, read, and read some more.  Well, he came back early.  And a coworker decided to throw me a going away party at noon.  And we have more packing to do.  So my original plan of read, read, and read some more has become maybe squeeze in some reading here and there.  I still want to commit to some reading today.

TBR Pile:

  • The Walking Dead Book 4
  • Bad Doings and Big Ideas
  • Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire

Here we go!

  • Take your current read and pick one sentence from three of the following pages:  page 1, page 77, page 179, page 255, page 360, or one from the 5th page from the end
  • Take the three sentences and make them into a short paragraph.  If it makes sense as is, fine.  If not, you can add your own words or sentences to make it romantic, funny, scary...whatever.
  • Be sure to bold and/or italicize the original text from the book or, if you leave it in the comments, put quotes around the original text.

My current read is Autumn: Disintegration...  here goes:

"I found her a couple of days later when she'd just started to move," he said.  Jas almost allowed himself to think about the body of the child again before he struck the match; almost, but not quite. "The bodies are falling apart.  They're going to be become less of a problem, not more," Ginnie said, helped herself to more food.

A Winter's Respite Readathon -- Starting Line

From Michelle at The True Book Addict:

The Winter's Respite Read-a-Thon is on January 23 through January 29! It will start at 12:00am Monday and end at 11:59pm on Sunday.  Times are central standard time so adjust your times accordingly.  I plan to host a mini-challenge (or two or more) and there will be a giveaway for every one who signs in at the starting line and completes a wrap up post at the end.  Of course, like most read-a-thons, the books read must be novels or novellas, adult or young adult are fine, but no children's books.  You DO NOT have to participate the entire week.  Join in when you can, start in the middle, end early...whatever works best for your schedule.  As long as you sign in at the sign-in post and do some kind of wrap up post, you're in for the giveaway.  As with my previous read-a-thons, it will be a week of relaxed reading during which we can personally challenge ourselves and whittle away those ever looming TBR piles/shelves/libraries.  I hope you will join me!

You do not have to have a blog to participate. You can sign-up, sign-in, and wrap-up...all from Facebook, Twitter, or Goodreads. You can also do updates from those locations, if you do not have a blog. Also, to chat or update during the read-a-thon on Twitter, use hashtag #WintersRespite.

I know I already completed one readathon this quarter, but it's so cold and nasty out that a readathon just sounds amazing.  So here I go again.

My goals:

  • Read 5 books
  • Review all books read
  • Finish The Great Gatsby and A Midsummer Night's Dream readalongs
  • Get back on Twitter to tweet my progress (@TFrances)
  • Read at least 2 library books (and return them, but not check any new out)

TBR Pile:

Comments:

Overall I did very well this readathon.  I read 5 complete books, plus sections of  Gatsby, Midsummer Night's Dream, and Hatter M Volume 1.  I thought I would get a lot of reading done over this weekend, but it turns out I was mistaken.  Being at home, I became very distracted with house chores and movies and television.  Turns out I read most of my hours at work during lunch time and right when I got home.

I did have fun completing a few of the mini challenges and reading others' updates.  Can't wait until the next Bout of Books.

Mini Challenge #5: Picture and Snack Time

From The Reading Housewives of Indiana:

This challenge is very simple. I did it this way on purpose. Sometimes for read-a-thons, you just want an easy challenge you can complete rather quickly so you can get right back into reading. So, I came up with a very simple picture that has you just taking one single picture.

All you have to do for this challenge is post a picture of your current read (physical book or ebook on your ereader) and your snack & drink all together in one shot. Feel free to also include yourself in this photo, it isn’t required, but it could be fun!

I got the chance to read a bit at work today, so here you go...

I read my sections of The Great Gatsby and A Midsummer Night's Dream for my readalongs and continued Mockingjay.  My snacks are my usual that I stash in my desk drawer.

Mini Challenge #2: Paranormal Book to Movie (Picked by Poison)

Disclaimer: I am participating in this challenge on my blog only.  The prize is a book from The Hunger Games, and as I own all three, I didn't want to enter myself into the contest and take away a prize from someone who desperately wants them.  But I did want to have a little fun and chose my perfect picks.

My Book: The Parasol Protectorate series by Gail Carriger

My Characters:

Alexia -- I chose Monica Bellucci.  She's gorgeous, but definitely wouldn't fit the traditional Victorian England ideal for women.

Lord Maccon --  Gerard Butler.  Scruffy, buff, Gerard Butler.  Perfect fit for the slightly overbearing, but very delicious Lord Maccon.

Lord Akeldama -- I always see Tom Cruise as Lord Akeldama, well Tom Cruise playing Lestat from Interview with a Vampire.  A bit effeminate, very well dressed, but with an undertone of violence (and a bit crazy).

Professor Lyall -- I see James McAvoy as the perfect Professor Lyall.  He can be intimadating, but can also play the dignified and refined Englishman.  And so yummy!  He's my favorite of the werewolves.

Madame Lefoux -- I'm going with Gail Carriger's own choice... Audrey Tatou.  Lefoux is French, she's quirky, she's fesity, beautiful yet enigmatic.  I think Audrey would play the perfect Lefoux.  And she would looo great dressed in men's Victorian clothes.

Mini Challenge #1: TBR Pile Pic

I'm cheating a bit with this one.  My actual TBR pile is way too big to try and photography in any real sense.  So instead, I am just including my TBR pile for the readathon.  The only books not pictured are Brains (which I finished today) and Fables: Rose Red (up next).

Bout of Books Readathon 3.0 -- Starting Line

From Bout of Books:

  • Bout of Books will run from 12:01am 1/9 through 11:59 pm 1/15 (your time zone)
  • However, all posts on this blog and the challenges at the co-hosts' blogs will publish at midnight CST (or UTC-6).
  • Read as much as you can whenever you can. The only person you are competing against here is yourself. There is no pressure.  Commit to the entire week or a few hours - whatever works best for your schedule.
  • Bout of Books should be about networking with fellow bloggers in addition to reading. You were going to read that week anyway, right? Bout of Books gives you the opportunity to share your reading experience with other readers.
  • Use #boutofbooks on Twitter to update people on your progress and what you are reading. Feel free to follow me (@BookBender) and your co-hosts (links in the side bar) for Bout of Books information, but please do NOT @ me (or the co-hosts) with all your updates. Using #boutofbooks should suffice. I will try to repopulate the Bout of Books Twitter list.  For ideas for using Twitter to your advantage during the read-a-thon, visit our Twitter Tips page.
  • All challenges and giveaways are separate, meaning you can participate in any challenge even if you are not interested in the prize that day.  All giveaway information can be found on the Giveaway page.
  • Help spread the word!  Grab the button in the side bar and post it on your blog.  Tweet.  The more people we have participating, the more fun it will be.

Round3: I'm ready for it.  My first readathon of 2012 and I get to start with one that I've come to love.  I especially love that I'm competing against myself, not some readathon wide target or against other bloggers. It's just me.  I've got some great books lined up for this one.  My previous records were 13 books for 1.0 and 7 books for 2.0.  I don't know if I can beat 1.0, but that's my big goal...

My goals:

  • Read at least 5 books
  • Read my required (for readalongs) sections of Gatsby and Midsummer
  • Review all books read
  • Participate in at least 2 mini challenges
  • Read at least 2 hours a day

My TBR pile:

  • The Hunger Games by Suzanne Collins
  • Catching Fire by Suzanne Collins

Bout of Books Readathon 2.0 Finish Line

Update

Number of books I’ve read today: 2.5
Total number of books I’ve read: 7.5

Pages Read Today: 472
Total Pages Read: 1962

Hours Read Today: 3 hour 33 minutes
Total Hours Read:  15 hours 15 minutes

Today #insixwords: Crazy Jack and Feisty Alexia = Fun!

Mini Challenges: None Today

I'm very happy with my showing for this Bout of Books Readathon.  I knew I wouldn't be able to accomplish as much as last time (full time job), but I think 7 1/2 books and over 1900 pages is quite a respectable accomplishment.  Plus I had fun with a few mini challenges.  And finally, I knocked out two of my 2011 Reading Challenges.  At this rate, I just might reach my reading challenge goals this year.  My one failing this time was the Net Galley book.  I just didn't get around to it.  I still have a fondness for physical books that the iPad just can't shake.  One of these days I will just have to take the iPad to work.  Then I would be forced to use it...  possibility.  Overall, I enjoyed this readathon for the second time and look forward to the next one!

My goals:

  • Read at least 5 books (7.5 done) √
  • Read at least 1 Net Galley book (TBD)
