Fall TBR Pile

Today I'm sharing my Fall TBR pile. Come October, I always feel the need to reevaluate my reading goals for the year. What books did I really want to read at the start of 2016 that have somehow fallen off my TBR pile? There's always a few.

  3. Drums of Autumn by Diana Gabaldon
  4. Prisoner of Heaven by Carlos Ruiz Zafon
  5. 2-3 Fairytale retellings (maybe library selections)
  6. Paper Towns by John Green
  7. Bossypants by Tina Fey
  8. Wild by Cheryl Strayed
  9. The Man in the High Castle by Philip K. Dick
  10. Bad Feminist by Roxane Gay

Top Ten Tuesday -- Beach Reads

Top Ten Tuesday is an original feature/weekly meme created at The Broke and the Bookish.

Each week we will post a new Top Ten list complete with one of our bloggers’ answers. Everyone is welcome to join.  If you can’t come up with ten, don’t worry about it—post as many as you can!

This week is a freebie week, so I'm going to cover a topic missed earlier this year. Today's list includes my beach reads for this summer!

  • East of West comics series -- Comics are perfect for the lazy summer days of summer. I love that I can finish a volume in one sitting. Currently, I'm diving into the East of West series.
  • The Handmaid's Tale by Margaret Atwood -- A reread is always a perfect choice for summer. I'll be rereading this for an upcoming book club.
  • Outlander series by Diana Gabaldon -- Diving into an epic story is perfect for summer. I hope to get to the third book in the series, Voyager, while lounging around.
  • Thunderstruck by Eric Larson -- I love narrative history and Larson is the master. Somehow I haven'[t read this one yet. Need to fix that this summer.
  • The Man in the High Castle by Philip K. Dick -- A classic I haven't read with an accompanying movie/tv adaptation sounds great for summer. And this one has been on my list for awhile now. Definitely adding it to my pile.
  • An Innocent, A Broad by Ann Leary -- A funny memoir seems perfect for the summer. Can't wait to dive into this one for an upcoming book club.
  • Variety of cooking books -- Something about summer draws me to the cooking section of the library shelves. I imagine I will be pulling a couple of these that include great pictures.

Today I'm sharing some of my most recent standout reads.

  1. Mr. Penumbra's 24-Hour Bookstore by Robin Sloan -- Our book club selection for March. Loved that it was set in San Francisco.
  2. Fables Vol. 22 -- The last volume in my favorite comics series. Did not disappoint.
  3. Station Eleven by Emily St. John Mandel -- Been on my list for forever. Amazing read!
  4. The House of Hades by Rick Riordan -- Really need to finish this series. Loved this installment.
  5. Dragonfly in Amber by Diana Gabaldon -- Very good sequel to Outlander. Now I can catch up with the television series.

Top Ten Tuesday -- Books I Didn't Get To

Each week we will post a new Top Ten list complete with one of our bloggers’ answers. Everyone is welcome to join.  If you can’t come up with ten, don’t worry about it—post as many as you can!

There was definitely a few books I didn't get to in 2015...

  1. A Dance with Dragons by George R.R. Martin -- Really wanted to get this one read in 2015... Now it will have to wait until sometime this spring.
  2. The Mists of Avalon by Marion Zimmer Bradley -- Been on shelves for years, I really want to read this in 2016.
  3. The Mortal Instruments series by Cassandra Clare -- I started the series in 2014 and never progressed beyond the first book. Maybe I'll get more of these read this coming year.
  4. The Magician's Land by Lev Grossman -- I loved the first two in the trilogy. And somehow I just never got to it.
  5. All the Romance series -- I've got at least 15 romance series just sitting on my floor. I really want to cut that pile down by at least a third by the end of 2016.

Top Ten Tuesday -- On the Syllabus: Intro to Science Fiction

Top Ten Tuesday is an original feature/weekly meme created at The Broke and the Bookish.

Each week we will post a new Top Ten list complete with one of our bloggers’ answers. Everyone is welcome to join.  If you can’t come up with ten, don’t worry about it—post as many as you can!

Today's class is all about introduction to science fiction. Have you wanted to dive into the science fiction world but found yourself hesitating? Did talk of Asimov or Clarke scare you? Never fear, here are 10 great books to dip your toe into the science fiction world. After wading in a bit, you may even become a huge scifi fan like myself.

1. The Time Machine by H.G. Wells -- A bit old fashioned at times, but look past it to see how science and fantasy are often intertwined. And if you're going to watch a movie version, please only watch the 1960 one.

2. Ender's Game by Orson Scott Card -- My 12-year-old loved this book for the great storyline and action. I love it for the characters and the philosophical questions about dealing with other species.

3. The Martian Chronicles by Ray Bradbury -- Also known for his fantasy novels, this slim novel of connecting stories tells a great story and brings out some great questions.

4. The Martian by Andy Weir -- A science heavy story released just this year. Don't let the science bog you down, it's a great look at the realities and risks of space travel and the main character has a great voice. I flew through this one in just a few days. After reading, you can compare to the movie they are making set to be released in November.

5. The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy by Douglas Adams -- My favorite book on the syllabus (so much so that my son is named after the main character!). The first book is slim, but packed full of comedy and adventure. You can't go wrong with any of Adams' work, but this one is my favorite.

6. Fahrenheit 451 by Ray Bradbury -- I'm not what to say about this book other than everyone should read it! It's a classic for a reason. Amazing look at a dystopian society that could be our future.

7. Ringworld by Larry Niven -- Another slim novel packed with interesting questions and adventure.

8. Brave New World by Aldous Huxley -- Another great dystopian classic. A must read for great discussions about society, structure, and government.

9. Snow Crash by Neal Stephenson -- I am not a computer geek, but I found this novel fascinating. I learned a lot about computers and philosophy. A must read!

10. Do Androids Dream of Electric Sheep? by Philip K. Dick -- I loved this thin volume so much.  Dick crafts a masterful look at what is means to be human. (While Blade Runner is amazing, the two are not the same story. Make sure to also read this book!)

Each week we will post a new Top Ten list complete with one of our bloggers’ answers. Everyone is welcome to join.  If you can’t come up with ten, don’t worry about it—post as many as you can!

2015 has been a good year of reading so far... I've read more than 10 5-starred books. So that means, I had to narrow down my choices.

  1. The Martian by Andy Weir -- My number one read so far! I could not put this book down.
  2. The Art of Asking by Amanda Palmer -- Palmer is a very polarizing character, but I love her and loved this book.
  3. Outlander by Diana Gabaldon -- A reread, but I loved it.
  4. Y The Last Man  -- A great complete comic series. I read all ten volumes in less than a month.
  5. Yes Please by Amy Poehler -- Poehler is hilarious hands down.
  6. Fables: Camelot -- After a large break, I finally caught up with the Fables series.
  7. The Manhattan Projects Book 1 -- A great introduction to a great series.
  8. Odd Thomas by Dean Koontz -- A book club suggestions from a friend. I really loved this volume and am thinking about continuing the series.
  9. Dead Wake by Erik Larson -- My second book back Larson. Love his writing style.
  10. Fire by Kristin Cashore -- A sequel that I like more than the first book.

  2. Bookish Products: I love branching beyond the actual books and listing some of my current favorite book related products. My last post here.
  3. Favorite Authors: Most of the authors on my list stay there year after year, but I also get some new ones on there. I love looking and seeing how my list changes. My latest list of favorite authors here.

Top Ten Tuesday -- Beach Bag Reads

Each week we will post a new Top Ten list complete with one of our bloggers’ answers. Everyone is welcome to join.  If you can’t come up with ten, don’t worry about it—post as many as you can!

I like to be pretty eclectic when if comes to my beach bag reads. I am not afraid to tackle big or heavy books, but I also need something lighter to balance it out. Here's my grab bag list:

  1. Historical Romances -- I always like to include some lighter romance fare to the bag. This summer I'm looking at some Mary Balogh and Candace Camp series.
  2. Paranormal Romances -- I love love to have a bit of paranormal romance in my bag. I'm thinking about finishing Kristen Callihan's Darkest London series.
  3. Nonfiction -- I have few choices for this summer. Right now I can't wait to dive into Dead Wake by Erik Larson about the last voyage of the Lusitania (yeah I'm a big history nerd) and everything by Gretchen Rubin (needing some uplifting self-help this summer.
  4. Epic Fantasy -- I love falling into big fantasy worlds during the summer. I'm hoping to finish out A Song of Ice and Fire.
  5. YA Fun -- I like the shorter fare of YA books. Maybe Paper Towns by John Green?
  6. Comics and Graphic Novels -- These are great for short time periods. I'm wanting to catch up with The Manhattan Projects and hopefully start Saga.

3. Who doesn't need a library card tote? The perfect choice to lug all my library books around.

4. This invisible shelf looks great. I would love to display my books like this.

5. Yes, these are books. But look how gorgeous they are. The set is like it's own work of art.

6. Personal library kit! I need this!

7. A perfect reading journal to collect all my thoughts.

8. A beautiful library charm bracelet. Must have for bibliophiles!

9. Cute little bookmarks! I always seem to be losing mine.

10. Very cute idea! I may not need to buy one, but I definitely need one in some form.

Top Ten Tuesday -- Books I'll Never Read

Top Ten Tuesday is an original feature/weekly meme created at The Broke and the Bookish.

Each week we will post a new Top Ten list complete with one of our bloggers’ answers. Everyone is welcome to join.  If you can’t come up with ten, don’t worry about it—post as many as you can!

1. Anything by John Grisham -- Just not my style or interest

2. Any political book from the far right -- Bet you can guess my place on the political spectrum.

3. Contemporary romance featuring the military -- No interest in this specific romance genre.

4. Werewolf erotica -- Weirdly specific I know, but it just doesn't interest me at all.

5. Amish/Mennonite romance -- Not going to happen.

6. The Casual Vacancy by J.K. Rowling -- Is it weird that I love Harry Potter but have no interest in reading this one?

7. Anything from Ernest Hemingway -- I've ready a few of his novels and cannot stand his writing. Definitely not on my TBR list.

8. American Sniper by Chris Kyle -- I know it's super hot right now, but I am so not interested in war stories at all.

9. Not That Kind of Girl by Lena Dunham -- I've watched a few episodes of Girls and I just don't get it at all. Don't think I'll ever pick up her book.

10. Any parenting book -- Yeah, just haven't had the urge to pick any of these up...
