Still need to go see Beauty and the Beast...
As part of my ongoing Day Zero Project, I've made a list of my favorite 101 songs of all time. To help cut down on the possibilities, I took songs only from my iTunes account. Each edition will include ~5 songs with a theme. Enjoy!
Today's theme is song's with "She" in the title. After listing my 101 favorite songs, I found four songs with "She" in the title. Weird! So they get their own day.
The Fray "She Is" -- As much as I love "Cable Car," I really love this track.
Panic at the Disco "She Had the World" -- Am I the only one that actually liked his Panic album? I loved the oddness of the songs. It reminded me of The Killer's Sam's Town album.
Third Day "She Sings in Riddles" -- Always love singing this song.
Josh Groban "So She Dances" -- Yes, I like Josh Groban.
It's December. Time to pull out the holiday music. I thought I would share my all-time favorite Christmas carols. I've even pinpointed my favorite versions of my favorite carols. Part 1 of 3.
She and Him "Baby, It's Cold Outside"
Point of Grace "Carol of the Bells / What Child is This?
Jason Mraz "Winter Wonderland"
Michael W. Smith "Christmas Waltz"
Josh Groban "Ave Maria"
It's been two weeks since I did a Music Monday. And there was a gap before that one. I'm slacking. I admit. When I first started writing this post, I thought of reasons why I hadn't written: I just moved, it's been nonstop since I got here, I have been job searching. But then I realized, those are all excuses, not reasons why. So, I'm recommitting myself to my blogging. And exciting news: I have a job interview tomorrow! Finally!
I feel like this an appropriate song for my mindset of the last year. I have been in a funk. It's been hard to have hope. It's been tough going. Yet, I keep trying to tell myself that someday things would get better. And so one of my favorite songs of all time. Beautiful, haunting, inspiring...
Lyrics (my favorite lines in bold):
Somewhere over the rainbow Way up high, There's a land that I heard of Once in a lullaby.
Somewhere over the rainbow Skies are blue, And the dreams that you dare to dream Really do come true.
Someday I'll wish upon a star And wake up where the clouds are far Behind me. Where troubles melt like lemon dropsAway above the chimney topsThat's where you'll find me.
Somewhere over the rainbow Bluebirds fly. Birds fly over the rainbow. Why then, oh why can't I?
If happy little bluebirds fly Beyond the rainbow Why, oh why can't I?
Versions and ratings:
The Classic: Judy Garland -- Of course I have to include the classic. She's just so amazing. I love this scene in the movie. Definitely #1
A more modern version: Israel Kamakawiwo Ole' -- An island feel. Gorgeous. #3
Eva Cassidy: #8
Katharine McPhee: #7
Glee version: A fun version. I had to add something from Glee! #4
Me First and the Gimme Gimmes: Of course we needed a punk version to add to the mix. #5
Josh Groban: I do love Josh Groban. #6
Jewel: I adore this version. #2
I may get some crap for this Music Monday, but I'm going to do it anyway. I love Josh Groban. Cheesy? Maybe. But such an amazing voice. It has rained almost all weekend. I needed some good soothing music to deal with the grey. I turned to Josh Groban. When did I stumble upon him? Probably around 2000 when he appeared on Sarah Brightman's La Luna tour. I love Sarah Brightman (the original Christine from Phantom of the Opera). I found this video from one of the concerts. Such a baby face. But listen to that voice!
Sarah Brightman and Josh Groban "There for Me" from 2007
After that, I really started listening to him. I bought his self-titled cd and the follow-up: Closer. And then I kind of stopped following him. I didn't get the next cd, Awake. In 2008, he played Anatoly Sergievsky in "Chess in Concert." Watching the performance, Adam Pascal and Idina Menzel definitely blow him away in the acting category, but I still love his voice.
Anthem from Chess
Now he has a fifth album out, Illuminations. I never bought it, but I absolutely love this song. Enjoy!
For all the times I tried for this And every chance at you I missed I've been known to go my way, but I confess It made me miss you more
I drew my line across the sandAnd set my flag in no man's landBut here I am the one man bandWith a song that's meant for two
And there is a light, from a higher window Shining down on you tonight And the music floats on the breeze Bringing an easier time And all of our cards are on the table Tell me what you want to do Just don't tell me that it's too late For me to love you
How perfect we were meant to be Our warm and silent symmetry It's times like these when all, all we need Is to be reminded
And I have flown a thousand miles To empty room and crowded aisles And we went from cathedral bells To show and tell and wish you wells And I, I still look at you and I am blinded I am blinded
Because there is a light, from a higher window Shining down on us tonight And the music floats on the breeze From an easier time
And all of our cards are on the table Tell me what you want to do Just don't tell me that it's too late Don't tell me that it's too late now Just don't tell me that it´s too late for me to love you
