Based on the first chapters of this book, I didn’t think I was going to like this pairing of Olivia and Cillian. Honestly I thought that Cillian was too good for her. Thankfully, these two characters have some good conversations and the reader can see their growth throughout the pages. This one was much more of the Katee Robert style that I so love. We get some good conversations. We get some spicy scenes. And we get some great action sequences. I am really enjoying this older series.

Hallorans vs. O'Malleys-that's how it's always been. James should be thinking more about how to expand his family's empire instead of how silky Carrigan's skin is against his and how he can next get her into his bed. Those are dangerous thoughts. But not nearly as dangerous as he'll be if he can't get what he wants: Carrigan by his side for the rest of their lives.

This series is fast becoming my fun romance series that I read in between much more dense or serious books. For the second book, we get another enemies to lovers storyline. I mostly knew where this one was going, but I still enjoyed the ride. Carrigan isn’t my favorite of the O’Malleys, but she does fit nicely with James. He is much more interesting character, taking over the family after his brother was killed and father went to jail in the first book. I wanted to see more from the innerworkings of the Halloran family. Maybe we will get to see a bit more later in the series.

I finally started reading one of Robert’s earlier series. This is contemporary mafia romance is it not my usual genre. Still, I will try anything Robert writes. Overall we get a good spicy enemies to lovers romance with added suspense and action. I enjoyed getting to know the O’Malleys although I mustt say that Teague isn’t my favorite so far. I did enjoy Teague and Callie’s dynamic as they navigate their families. I think this will be one of those series that doesn’t stay with me forever, but is entertaining to read in between other books.

Art historian Bridget Quinn delves into the lives and careers of 15 female artists from around the globe in text that's smart, feisty, educational, and an enjoyable read. Replete with beautiful reproductions of the artists' works and contemporary portraits of each artist by renowned illustrator Lisa Congdon, this is art history from the Renaissance to Abstract Expressionism for the modern art lover, reader, and feminist.

An online bookish friend recommended this book and I immediately got it from the library. I took two amazing Women Artists in History classes in college, and this book brought me right back to that space of learning. I knew about a few of the women profiled here, but not others. I loved the conversational style of writing highlighting these women’s lives and accomplishments. I loved seeing some of their work in the pages. And I especially love bringing history out of the closet. This would be the perfect gift book for someone interested in women and art.

And we come to the end of The Illuminae Files! After a slight dip in book two, I’m back to another 5 star rating for this volume. I loved seeing all three of our main couples come together to repel the BeiTech fleet on Kerenza and get the truth out there. I probably didn’t really need the added “twist” about Frobisher (seriously, who didn’t see that coming?), but loved all the other turns of the plot. We get a big massive science fiction action adventure story with some great lively characters. I loved seeing Kady and Hanna really take charge and lead the entire crew. I loved seeing Ezra, Nik, and everyone else support them. We get happy endings, while also acknowledging all of the losses. This entire series felt like the best of the Battlestar Galactica television series. No “plan” from the beings here. Just action and survival. I will miss this series greatly.

I am totally in with this series. Kicking myself for not reading it sooner! For the second book, we switch to Heimdall to meet two new characters and follow them through a harrowing action story. Hanna and Nik are fun characters (arguably Nik is way more fun than Ezra from Illuminae). We get another badass young woman who takes the rescue of the station very personally. We follow Hanna and Nik as they go up against an elite extermination squad and some unwanted newborns. I know that some people will be very grossed out by the aliens, but I loved the horror fun. This is my book series! I cannot wait to see what happens in the third book.

After reading Shepherd’s later book, The Cartographers, I wasn’t sure that I would like this one. But a ton of people thought I might, and they were right. This is a very thought provoking and moody tale. It reminds me of The Road and The Walking Dead but without the absolute bleakness of those stories. The story starts out pretty straight forward, but becomes weirder and weirder as we go along. At some point, the reader just has to accept the weirdness and keep moving forward. Many aspects of the shadowless are not explained, but that’s not really the point here. The point is an examination of how memories make us, how memories create our identities and allow us to live in the world. I found myself wondering about all the things that make up me. A much more thought provoking book than her later works.

Emma hadn't planned that her next assignment as a traveling nurse would be in Minnesota, but she and her best friend agree that dating Justin is too good of an opportunity to pass up, especially when they get to rent an adorable cottage on a private island on Lake Minnetonka.

It's supposed to be a quick fling, just for the summer. But when Emma's toxic mother shows up and Justin has to assume guardianship of his three siblings, they're suddenly navigating a lot more than they expected--including catching real feelings for each other. What if this time Fate has actually brought the perfect pair together?

Another satisfying contemporary romance. Abby Jimenez is one of my go-tos for the simple fact that she writes real people. I feel like I could go and get coffee with any of her characters and it would feel real. I thoroughly enjoyed the romance between Emma and Justin. They are an effortless couple when together. I loved seeing them connect and then work through the hard parts. I loved Sloane’s friendship with Maddy and seeing them grow as friends. I absolutely hated the way that Emm’a mother treated her throughout her life. Truly not a good person at all. I had to take off a point for the absolutely bonkers twist/connection to other books. I thought it was very clunky. Still, I’ll try another Jimenez publishes.

In my reading of all of Larson’s books, I somehow his first big book. A reader can tell that this is one of his earlier books. We don’t have quite as robust of a story weaving together plot lines and bringing everything together. As to the story itself, this is a fascinating look at a natural disaster. I loved finding out more about the 1900 Galveston hurricane. Apparently, I have a thing for natural disaster books. I do wish that we had got a bit more insight in Isaac, but I was with all the people of Galveston as they dealt with a horrific tragedy.

That is, until their pilot is discovered gruesomely murdered. Is this Ophelia’s worst nightmare starting—a wave of violence and mental deterioration from ERS? Or is it something even more sinister?

Terrified that history will repeat itself, Ophelia and the crew must work together to figure out what’s happening. But trust is hard to come by…and the crew isn’t the only one keeping secrets.

Another proper space horror adventure! I really enjoyed Barnes’s previous book Dead Silence and was hoping with would be another good horror adventure. Thankfully it completely delivers on the promise! Right away we’re introduced to our main characters and have to decide whether or not to trust them. As the plot slowly unravels, we learn more about the characters, their motivations, and their secrets. I really fell for Ophelia and found myself really hoping that she would be a truthful main character. And obviously Severin was positioned as a mysterious and yet intriguing counterpoint. I loved seeing the characters respond to the events on the station. The last 60 pages or so were a wild ride. I was very much there for it until the end. Really enjoyed this adventure.

I spied this on a library featured shelf and immediately snatched it. I was hoping of a creepy fun ghost adventure. And that’s exactly what I got! We dive right into the adventure with a group of ghost hunters with a YouTube channel. Of course I had to keep in mind that this is a young adult novel. There were a few times when I got very annoyed by the character’s reactions to things, but then remembered that they are teenagers. This was much like the R.L. Stine novels of my early teen years. The plot was fast moving. The creepy scenes wee sufficiently creepy. I finished this one in two days and enjoyed the time. I am definitely going to read the sequel.

Always happy to help a lady in distress, Max thinks he’s saving Evie from her dull spinster’s life. He’ll help her find a husband and congratulate himself on a job well done. But as shy Evie becomes the shining star he always knew she could be, she somehow steals his heart. And when her reputation is threatened, can Max convince her to choose a glittering, aristocratic life with him over the cozy comfort of her bookshop?

I needed a Cinderella retelling and just loved this cover so much (Check out that dress) that I had to check it out. Thankfully this was a good historical romance for the week. Evie is a great foil for the Duke and his high and mightyness. There's a lot of fun back and forth in this story with some great banter. The actual romance bits came a bit too late for my tastes, but were decent. I just wish we would have gotten more of Evie and Max after they start a relationship.

One of our choices for book club discussion at the retreat. Kate Quinn is always a crowd-pleaser and I was hoping this new one would fit the group. Overall, I really enjoyed this book. Right away we meet three women attempting to navigate life in early 1900s San Francisco. I loved Alice and was intrigued by Suling. Gemma was my least favorite of the women. Despite being “worldly,” I felt that she was the most naive of the women. I wanted to spend more time with Alice and her studies. And I wanted to see the city through Suling’s eyes even more than we get. The big earthquake is coming (they of course do not know) and there is a sense of dread in every chapter. More so than Quinn’s other books, this one has a suspense feel to it. I wasn’t opposed, but it was a different tone. Chang’s voice comes mainly through Suling and her discussions of Chinese Americans and Chinatown. I would have love more information about the Phoenix Crown itself and more discussions about the theft of artifacts. Alas, those sections fall a little short. I throughly enjoyed my reading time, but this one doesn’t quite reach the heights of The Alice Network.

With wedding planning underway and a short timeline, my best friend, Lia, has recruited me to help her battle the snarly beast that is Mrs. Beaver. Not scared at all, I accept the challenge as her man-in-waiting--aka, man of honor--and take matters into my own hands.
The only problem is, with every second we draw closer to the wedding, I'm starting to see my best girl in a different light.
She's always been beautiful to me, but now . . . I find myself staring a touch too long. My hand lingering for one more minute. And when she's upset? Allowing her to sleep in my bed.
And before I know what's happening, it hits me like a ton of bricks. I'm in love with my best friend. Not just in love, but infatuated.
No one compares to her and nothing seems to distract me from that realization.
Not the girl I try to date while I help plan Lia's wedding.
Not her angry fiancé who thinks I'm growing too close.
And not the looming deadline of her nuptials.
Which means, there's only one thing left for me to do. Prove to Lia I'm the one she should be with instead. But with the pressure of her engagement, the stress from her soon-to-be mother-in-law, and the breath-stealing nerves running through me, I'm finding it a lot harder to claim the girl than I would like to admit.
Say a little prayer for me . . .

Thankfully a strong showing for the ending of this contemporary series. Breaker is a terrible name for our MMC, but I did love him. His friendship with Lia was delightful. I completely bought the idea of their friendship. And I completely bought their progression to a romantic relationship. I usually don’t like Friends to Lovers as usually there’s a big unrequited love aspect to the story. This one avoids most of that and focuses on their growing attraction. There were a few sections that dealt with Brian and Lia where I just really wanted to see Lia punch him. Thankfully this is a good contemporary romance with a Happily Ever After, so no worries. Light, fluffy, and with some great steamy scenes. I enjoyed this one.

Finally we reach the conclusion of the Legend of the Four Soldiers. We get to see the return of Reynaud and his fight to regain his title. I was hoping for a beautiful romance. It falls a little short of that. I could never truly buy the romance between Reynaud and Beatrice. I never really got to see a meeting of two people in a partnership. I did really love all the appearances of the other characters and the conclusion of the mystery of the traitor. I loved seeing Beatrice find a place with the other wives. And seeing the men rekindle their friendships. Overall a really enjoyable historical romance.

Ever since the start of this series, I had wanted a book focused on Alistair. Thankfully this volume focused on his romance. I do love a dark and broody hero in my romances, and Alistair was just the ticket. We get to see a women out of options fall into a precarious position and find her strength. We get to see a man scarred (not just physically), and yet find his happiness. Hoyt really loves winding together a larger mystery with a swoon romance. I really do enjoy her series.

I actually enjoyed this volume much more than the first one in the series. I think I really latched onto Melisandre and her entire plan for life. While being hesitant in many areas of her life, she makes a plan and started to initiate it. We see her pursue her dreams and her husband in equal fashion. I loved seeing a much more confident heroine to balance out our rake hero. While I wasn’t very excited about Jasper in the first book, he really shines here. While not every action is laudable, by the end of the book we really understand him and his actions. There’s a great romance at the heart of this book. But we also get more pieces to the mystery of what happened at Spinner’s Falls. I’m still very into this series and wanting to learn more. I’m extra excited to read Helen and Allistair’s story in the next book.

Someone (I truly cannot remember who now) said that this was one of the scariest books that they have ever read. Of course, I had to pick this one up and read it immediately. While the book doesn’t live up to the hype, I still enjoyed this horror novel. I got a lot of reminders of The Magicians and Narnia with a splash of The Wind in the Willows and Watership Down. Once the second part started, I knew exactly what was going to happen in the storyline, but I was still interested in reading the rest of the novel. We follow our main trio as they explore a childhood inspiration from a favorite book. Of course, things are not all that they seem. We know that things are much more dire and dangerous than should be. Once the story truly gets going, it doesn’t let up until the end. Fascinating look at the nature of humanity and conquest. A solid horror book to pick up.

I first met Tristan Miles at a meeting where he was trying to take over my late husband’s company. He was powerful, arrogant, and infuriatingly gorgeous, and I hated him with every cell in my body. In the shock of the century, he called me three days later and asked me on a date. I would rather die than date a man like him—though I do have to admit it was good for the ego. Turning him down was the highlight of my year. Six months later, he was the guest speaker at a conference I attended in France. Still arrogant and infuriating—but this time, surprisingly charming and witty. When he looked at me, I got butterflies. But I can’t go there. He’s just a player in a hot suit, and I’m just a widow with three unruly sons. I just need this conference to be over. Because everybody knows that Tristan Miles always gets what he wants…and what he wants is me.

Somehow I keep falling back into the contemporary romance genre as my comfort reads. I get pulled into the drama and the intrigue but end up being able to just put it to the side when I’m done. For this one, I wasn’t a fan of the first book in the series, but this one was much better. I really really loved Tristan. He’s so incredibly great. And while I know that Claire had her issues, I couldn’t understand most of her life. I did want her to gain a bit more confidence when it came to tackling her children. Thankfully Tristan was the perfect compliment to her brand of chaos. I think that I’m back into this series.

Meanwhile, Ollie is trapped in the world behind the mist, learning the horrifying secrets of the smiling man's carnival, and trying everything to help her friends find her. Brian, Coco and Phil will risk everything to rescue Ollie—but they all soon realize this game is much more dangerous than the ones before. This time the smiling man is playing for keeps.

And the end of this fun and spooky series! I have really enjoyed the fun creepy bits here and there and this one really amped up the spook factor. I was all for the carnival setting and the return of the smiling man. Plus we get some very creepy minions. The mystery of how Olivia and friends can ge3t out of the situation was extra fun. The storyline kept moving and progressing quickly just how I liked. My biggest problem was how quickly the ending happened. We don’t get to see Brian and Coco get through the carnival to save Olivia. They just show up and everything happens super quickly. I wanted to see more. sStill, it was a great ending to the series.
