Just for the Summer by Abby Jimenez

Title: Just for the Summer (Part of Your World #3)

Justin has a curse, and thanks to a Reddit thread, it's now all over the internet. Every woman he dates goes on to find their soul mate the second they break up. When a woman slides into his DMs with the same problem, they come up with a plan: They'll date each other and break up. Their curses will cancel each other’s out, and they’ll both go on to find the love of their lives. It’s a bonkers idea… and it just might work.

Emma hadn't planned that her next assignment as a traveling nurse would be in Minnesota, but she and her best friend agree that dating Justin is too good of an opportunity to pass up, especially when they get to rent an adorable cottage on a private island on Lake Minnetonka.

It's supposed to be a quick fling, just for the summer. But when Emma's toxic mother shows up and Justin has to assume guardianship of his three siblings, they're suddenly navigating a lot more than they expected--including catching real feelings for each other. What if this time Fate has actually brought the perfect pair together?

Another satisfying contemporary romance. Abby Jimenez is one of my go-tos for the simple fact that she writes real people. I feel like I could go and get coffee with any of her characters and it would feel real. I thoroughly enjoyed the romance between Emma and Justin. They are an effortless couple when together. I loved seeing them connect and then work through the hard parts. I loved Sloane’s friendship with Maddy and seeing them grow as friends. I absolutely hated the way that Emm’a mother treated her throughout her life. Truly not a good person at all. I had to take off a point for the absolutely bonkers twist/connection to other books. I thought it was very clunky. Still, I’ll try another Jimenez publishes.

Dr. Briana Ortiz’s life is seriously flatlining. Her divorce is just about finalized, her brother’s running out of time to find a kidney donor, and that promotion she wants? Oh, that’s probably going to the new man-doctor who’s already registering eighty-friggin’-seven on Briana’s “pain in my ass” scale. But just when all systems are set to hate, Dr. Jacob Maddox completely flips the game . . . by sending Briana a letter.

And it’s a really good letter. Like the kind that proves that Jacob isn’t actually Satan. Worse, he might be this fantastically funny and subversively likeable guy who’s terrible at first impressions. Because suddenly he and Bri are exchanging letters, sharing lunch dates in her “sob closet,” and discussing the merits of freakishly tiny horses. But when Jacob decides to give Briana the best gift imaginable—a kidney for her brother—she wonders just how she can resist this quietly sexy new doctor . . . especially when he calls in a favor she
can’t refuse.

CW: Anxiety, depression, cheating, miscarriage, pregnancy

As with all of Jimenez’s books, this one deals with some tough subjects. Check out those CWs before reading. I was hoping for an epic real-life romance where the leads have real problems and learn to support each other. This one did not disappoint. We get a sweet story of two slightly damaged adults finding love after pushing each other and everyone else away. I loved getting to hear Briana’s story after she was featured in Jimenez’s previous book, Part of Your World. But the star of the book for me was definitely Jacob. I don’t have quite the same level of anxiety that Jacob does, but I could see so much of me in him. I understand every single thing he did (and didn’t do). I was right there with him for every hard experience and every joy. After reading this, I am reminded of the many things that J does for my anxiety that are just a regular part of our relationship. I really think I found a keeper there. By the end of the book, I was crying happy tears. And then I read the author’s note, and I was full on sobbing. Absolutely perfect book for the perfect time. Definitely going onto my Top 10 of the year! I cannot get over how much this one really hit me. So great!

After a wild bet, gourmet grilled-cheese sandwich, and cuddle with a baby goat, Alexis Montgomery has had her world turned upside down. The cause: Daniel Grant, a ridiculously hot carpenter who’s ten years younger than her and as casual as they come—the complete opposite of sophisticated city-girl Alexis. And yet their chemistry is undeniable.

While her ultra-wealthy parents want her to carry on the family legacy of world-renowned surgeons, Alexis doesn’t need glory or fame. She’s fine with being a “mere” ER doctor. And every minute she spends with Daniel and the tight-knit town where he lives, she’s discovering just what’s really important. Yet letting their relationship become anything more than a short-term fling would mean turning her back on her family and giving up the opportunity to help thousands of people.

Bringing Daniel into her world is impossible, and yet she can’t just give up the joy she’s found with him either. With so many differences between them, how can Alexis possibly choose between her world and his?

CW: Domestic Violence, Abuse

Look at that Content Warning. Usually I immediately put a book down if it deals with those topics, and yet I wanted to read this one. I think my ability to attempt it is due to previous success with Jimenez’s books. She deftly handles very difficult topics within her contemporary romance books. In this one, we meet two very different people that eventually realize just what they are missing in life. Alexis is a great character, but Daniel is the real favorite of the couple. I loved his commitment to his town and the people within his life. Seriously, so attractive! There’s a happy ending, but it definitely takes a while for our characters to get there. Along the way, we get very serious events and discussions. I found myself working through the some of my past. Strange cathartic book for me. It’s not super steamy, but a very satisfying contemporary romance.

Reading Challenges: Seasonal TBR - Winter

When Vanessa Price quit her job to pursue her dream of traveling the globe, she wasn't expecting to gain millions of YouTube followers who shared her joy of seizing every moment. For her, living each day to its fullest isn't just a motto. Her mother and sister never saw the age of 30, and Vanessa doesn't want to take anything for granted. But after her half sister suddenly leaves Vanessa in custody of her baby daughter, life goes from "daily adventure" to "next-level bad" (now with bonus baby vomit in hair). The last person Vanessa expects to show up offering help is the hot lawyer next door, Adrian Copeland. After all, she barely knows him. No one warned her that he was the Secret Baby Tamer or that she'd be spending a whole lot of time with him and his geriatric Chihuahua. Now she's feeling things she's vowed not to feel. Because the only thing worse than falling for Adrian is finding a little hope for a future she may never see.

I wasn’t sure how much I was going to love this volume as we meet Adrian for literally five minutes in the previous book. Thankfully, this was much more of a stand alone book where we get to really know our main characters and the characters from the previous book only make an appearance in one chapter. Right away, I really fell for Adrian and his entire outlook on life. And then get to meet Vanessa and everything stars to change. At times, I was a bit annoyed with Vanessa and wanted her to be more honest with Adrian, but thankfully she grew by the end of the book. And Adrian eased up on his control of life and learned to live. I did have two issues with the book: 1. Jimenez does not write steamy scenes at all. They are very perfunctory when I really wanted something more descriptive. 2. The amount of times they randomly left the baby with the Yoga Lady down the hall was unbelievable. They somehow had an amazing support system and didn’t even realize it. Such privilege. Otherwise, I really did enjoy this addition to the series.

Reading Challenges: Modern Mrs. Darcy; Fall TBR

Two years after losing her fiancé, Sloan Monroe still can't seem to get her life back on track. But one trouble-making pup with a "take me home" look in his eyes is about to change everything. With her new pet by her side, Sloan finally starts to feel more like herself. Then, after weeks of unanswered texts, Tucker's owner reaches out. He's a musician on tour in Australia. And bottom line: He wants Tucker back.
Well, Sloan's not about to give up her dog without a fight. But what if this Jason guy really loves Tucker? As their flirty texts turn into long calls, Sloan can't deny a connection. Jason is hot and nice and funny. There's no telling what could happen when they meet in person. The question is: With his music career on the rise, how long will Jason really stick around? And is it possible for Sloan to survive another heartbreak?

I didn’t absolutely love the first book in this series. Kristen just wasn’t my favorite character, but I really loved Sloan. So it was really nice to read Sloan’s story after the terrible tragedy from the first book. Right away, I was suck into the story and fell for Sloan and especially Jason. I absolutely adored Sloan and Jason’s growing relationship. And then they hit some pretty big obstacles. If I was reading any other style of book, I would have been really concerned. As this was a contemporary romance, everything ended up just right and Sloan and Jason got their happily ever after. So don’t been too sad in the middle of the book, everything will turn out okay.

Reading Challenges: Ebook

Kristen Peterson doesn't do drama, will fight to the death for her friends, and has no room in her life for guys who just don't get her. She's also keeping a big secret: facing a medically necessary procedure that will make it impossible for her to have children.
Planning her best friend's wedding is bittersweet for Kristen -- especially when she meets the best man, Josh Copeland. He's funny, sexy, never offended by her mile-wide streak of sarcasm, and always one chicken enchilada ahead of her hangry. Even her dog, Stuntman Mike, adores him. The only catch: Josh wants a big family someday. Kristen knows he'd be better off with someone else, but as their attraction grows, it's harder and harder to keep him at arm's length.

CW: Infertility, death

I read this one as I friend warned me not to read Jimenez’s newer book (The Happily Ever After Playlist) before reading this one for spoilers. I didn’t realize it was a series. Thank goodness I didn’t read the summary of the number two before reading this book. Spoilers abound!

As for this volume, I was disappointed. The first and second halves of this one feel like different books. The tone becomes very serious in the second half and I was not prepared for the switch. The cover deluded me into thinking this was a lighthearted romance story. Nope! There are serious events and issues in this book. I was not prepared at all. And the two biggest themes (infertility and death) could really mess with a person who was not prepared to encounter those in the book. Beyond the tone, I was not on board with Kristen as a main character. She was very immature and selfish throughout most fo the book. I just wanted someone to knock some sense into her at many moments. And the way she treated Josh was so not fair. It was very bad behavior indeed. (I even felt sorry for Tyler who didn’t seem like a terrible guy, just different than Kristen wanted.) One last gripe: the big event in the second half of the book really felt like a device to get Kristen and Josh together. It’s devastating to at least one other character, but most of it gets brushed over so we can see Kristen and Josh get their HEA. Not a book for me.
