Am I friends with JP Cane?
Ha! That's laughable.
Besides the fact that he’s adopted some far-fetched notion from the movie When Harry Met Sally that says men and women can't be friends and work together, it’s safe to say we're not friends. He's annoyingly loud, obnoxiously handsome, and has made an art out of poking all my hot buttons . . . multiple times a day.
So you can imagine how disgruntled I am when I not only have to fly to San Francisco with him for work, but stay in the same penthouse. Yup, we're sharing the same air, twenty-four-seven. We're talking full-fledged working roommates.
The man doesn't know what it means to wear a shirt, thrives off protein bars, and you guessed it, moans loud enough for people to believe he's Meg Ryan in a restaurant.
Spoiler Alert: I WON'T be having what he's having.
Tack on his continuous flirting and his polished good looks, and I'm caught staring down the barrel of a seductive temptation that makes it hard for me to sleep at night.
But guess who can control herself? This girl.
Because if there is one thing I know for certain, it's that JP Cane and I are so not meant to be.

Enemies to lovers is my favorite romance trope, so of course, I picked up this series. I was into the first book and hoped I would love the second. Unfortunately, I really disliked JP and that fact really turned me of to the entire book. We start out strong with a fun slightly antagonistic relationship between Kelsey and JP. We get some good banter and ridiculous situations. But then, JP’s entire demeanor and personality really started to bother me. At a certain point in the book, JP tells the readers that he is completely in love with Kelsey and is going to attempt to get her to see that. But all of his actions are so hot and cold. She does one thing, such as go on a date with another man, and he completely shuts her out. Mind you, she has no idea that JP supposedly loves her. He just completely shuts down and then gets mad at Kelsey when she questions him. His inability to communicate or at least modulate his moods raised some serious red flags for me. I doubt that them declaring their love is going to eliminate his mood swings. Very scary behavior from the male lead. I just couldn’t root for them at all.

This smart-mouthed girl from Brooklyn may just be his downfall.

Another contemporary romance for me. I think I might need to lay off these for awhile. But before I do, I did end up enjoying this enemies to lovers story. The banter in the first half of the book was amazing. I loved Aiden and Francesca’s adventures in attempting to get the groom back. The book went downhill a bit after they started dating. It just wasn’t quite the same spark. My favorite parts were when Aiden interacted with Francesca’s family especially her brothers. It was fun and silly. The steamy scenes were pretty steamy, but not quite my favorite. There was a little too much aggression in those scenes for me to love them. But overall, it was a decent romance.

Oh this one was intense! We get a very dramatic and yet beautiful romance story wrapped around the larger political and fantastical storyline affecting Olympus. We move our action to the Lower City and find Eurydice attempting to find her new balance after the events in the first book in the series. I was very much into following her journey. At times, she is much too immature for my personal tastes. Enter Charon, the stabilizing force in her life. I have been wanting his story since the very first book. I was so very excited to see how he connected with Eurydice. As a bonus, we get to see how Orpehus fits into Eurydice and Charon’s relationship. And it was very spicy! I was so very into their relationship evolution. Even more, I’m very into the larger storyline featuring all the characters in the Dark Olympus series.

Oh this was such a disappointment… After the first book in the series, I was very exacted to read the next book featuring Kallum. And the first half of the book was great. I fell for Winnie and Kallum. I really enjoyed the discussion about purity culture and the after-effects of bad relationships and marriages. I was excited to see Winnie making strides in her own sexual growth and independence. I loved seeing the two main characters begin to open up to each others and their friends and families. It was delightful. And then we get tot he second half of the book and absolutely everything gets destroyed. Instead of continuing Winnie’s journey of growth, she becomes pregnant and everything goes off the rails. She tells everyone but Kallum. She doesn’t communicate or handle anything well. But my biggest complaint is that instead of continuing the journey, Winnie immediately becomes pregnant. In many ways, purity culture warns that having sex leads to degradation and immediate pregnancy. In this case, at least the second part becomes true. And it annoys me so much! This is not a good message.

At Christmas, I actually read the second one last month and really enjoyed it. So, I picked up the first one in the series for this month’s reading. The book had a lot more drama and serious conversations than I was expecting. I really did fall for Gannon and Paige as they navigate their undeniable attraction. The reality TV angle added just the right amount of other characters and background plot to continue the romantic storyline. The steamy scenes are very well done and steamy. I ended dup speeding through this one, but it was a lovely story. I just might have to read more from Lucy Score.

We danced and laughed our way around Boston and had a night of crazy passion that no woman would ever forget. That was twelve months ago, and I haven’t heard from him—until today. I started a new job and met the CEO. You can imagine my surprise to see those naughty blue eyes dance with delight when he saw me across the mahogany desk. But I’m not that carefree girl anymore. My life has changed, I have responsibilities. I just got an email. He wants to see me in his office for a private meeting at 8:00 a.m. Naughty blue eyes have no place in the workplace. What kind of private meeting does he have in mind?

I picked this one up as a contender for Dirty Book Month, but I realized that I just couldn’t handle the drama within the storyline. Jameson was much too much an arrogant alpha male for me to root for him. I couldn’t believe some of the things that he did to and around Emily. She was way too immature most of the story. I was very annoyed by her constant whining and need to argue with Jameson. In the end, I didn’t feel like the characters actually resolved any of their fundamental differences. Their big problems were just swept under the rug. I was much too stressed out after reading this story. Not my cup of tea at all.

I picked this one up as a possibility for Dirty Book Month. And while this book is not going to work for that theme, I still really enjoyed this one featuring an older protagonist and a great relationship. Lela is a great FMC who has dealt with a lot of shit in her life and finds her way. Donovan is a great match for Lela in her new life. I especially loved seeing Lela interact with all her friends and Donovan’s daughter. My biggest complaint was that there weren’t enough steamy scenes. I wanted to see more of Lela and Donovan together. Still, this was a good older protagonist romance.

A probably ultimately forgetful romance, but I definitely enjoyed reading it. Enemies to lovers is my top favorite romance trope and this book really leaned into that. We also get a bit of opposites attract and forced proximity throughout the book. Darcy and Reed are a fun couple to watch argue and make up. The sexy scenes are appropriately steamy while seeming very natural to their relationship. This one was a good read for the week, but sadly, not a good choice for February’s Dirty Book Club Month selection.

A note about the spice rating: I would consider this one a 5, but that 5-ness doesn’t come into the story until about 80% of the way through the book. There’s just a lot of romcom tension before that point.

This was a good romcom style romance story complete with meet-cute, different worlds, forced proximity, and a very sexy if confusing MMC. I grabbed this one off the library’s new releases shelf just wanting something light and fluffy for the week. It definitely fits the bill. We get a fun romp of a story with two interesting main characters. I do think the book does suffer from not having the other main character’s point of view. I’ve found that I really enjoy the back and forth narrative style. This one is strictly told from Alexis’s point of view. This is realistic fiction although I did have a hard time buying the political situation in Texas. Just not that realistic. Suspending that, I sped through this book rooting for Alexis and Logan the entire time.

Two can play the seduction game, however, and Hephaestus is all too happy to put his new wife in her place. Her ex, Adonis, seems like he'll do the trick. It doesn't hurt that he's gorgeous in the way of fallen angels, either.

The only problem with using seduction as a weapon? Hearts are all too quick to get involved. With Hephaestus and Aphrodite trading venomous strikes that feel a whole lot like foreplay, lines become blurred and emotions entangled. But a broken heart may be the least of their worries. With unrest in Olympus reaching new heights, these bedroom games may have deadly consequences for themselves, their city, and everyone they've come to love.

My biggest complaint about this book… it needed to be longer. We get a great setup with Eris’s forced marriage to Theseus alongside the complications of Pandora and Adonis. We get the larger storyline of the barriers failing and new player trying to take over Olympus. I was all for slowly untangling this mess and watching characters find themselves and each other. And they do, but the ending really seemed rushed to me. I wanted to sit with some of the revelations a bit longer. I wanted to see how the polyam groupings worked in everyday life, not just in the bedroom. I wanted more from these characters. The review is pretty negative, but I did really enjoy reading the book. I loved getting more insight into some of the characters that we’ve briefly encountered. Theseus was my favorite. I loved learning his story and seeing him finally become his own person and find love, in very unexpected places. I cannot wait until the next Dark Olympus book in January.

This book had been on my random TBR shortlist for awhile now. I had heard that it was good contemporary romance that was mostly closed door. That last part is probably why it say on my TBR for as long as it did. I’m usually not a fan of mostly closed door romance, but I picked this one up and was pleasantly surprised. The book is much more on the rom-com side of romances with a quirky meet-cute and more misses than hits. Everyone knows that Jack and Hannah should be together except for Hannah. It takes her the entire book to get there, but it was a fun journey. I did wish that we had less of Hannah’s coworkers, especially her ex Robby, and more of Jack’s family. And I’m always hoping for a bit more spice. Overall, I did enjoy this contemporary romance for what it was.

And we have come to the end of the Heartbreaker Bay series, or at least I assume it’s the end. I can’t actually find the two short stories that I haven’t read and I don’t think Shalvis has written any more with these characters. So we finally get a story featuring Ivy after being name dropped for the last few books. She gets a decent story involving Caleb’s cousin Kel. I did enjoy those two together, figuring out how to deal with their family dramas and learning to open up to each other. The overall action plot line wasn’t my favorite in the series, but it did add to the overall story. I did wish to see a bit more time between Ivy and Kel before they engaged in a relationship. I’m a sucker for tension and this book left me wanting more. But it was a fun breezy read for the week as I finish this series I started at Christmas last year.

Another volume in this good contemporary romance series. I still really enjoy how every book has some type of more serious themes. Sometimes I want a bit of substance along with my fluffy romance. In this one, I really liked Sadie as a character. She felt very real with all her hang-ups. I enjoyed her prickly manor especially as she sparred with Caleb. Speaking of, Caleb wasn’t my favorite main character, but he was a decent counterpart to Sadie. Somehow I only have one more completed book in this series? I cannot even imagine.

A random pick from my extensive Kindle library. And I really enjoyed this one. We get a contemporary retelling of Austen’s Emma (in my top half of Austen novels) with a few tweaks here and there. I enjoyed seeing a modern Emma deal with modern matchmaking obstacles. Thankfully our heroine, Cam, is not a wilting wallflower or a sheltered damsel. She’s an independent woman with baggage, but manages to work through most of that baggage inside these pages. We get to see her actually grow and change independent of the romance aspects. Focusing on the romance, I really loved Tyler’s point of view the best. He was a great modern Knightly. He had his own backstory to work through. I loved seeing the two of them together as a relationship unfolded. We didn’t have to wait until the end to get our main characters together. Thank goodness! After finding this one, I am definitely reading the rest of Hart’s Austen inspired modern romances.

I absolutely adored The Love Hypothesis and hoped that this one would be another winner. But, I apparently am a bit over Hazelwood’s romances. I was very annoyed with Elsie throughout most of the book. She was so oblivious to her issues that I wanted to shake her. I just really wanted to see more growth and acknowledgment throughout the book. The romance with Jack felt very one-sided. I loved Jack, but his feelings and issues were completely pushed to the back because of Elsie. I wanted more of a partnership in the romance. And I’m coming to realize that I don’t like Hazelwood’s sex scenes. They are very graphic, but not really well written and steamy enough for me. I keep reading her books and coming away with wanting more.

As with all of Jimenez’s books, this one deals with some tough subjects. Check out those CWs before reading. I was hoping for an epic real-life romance where the leads have real problems and learn to support each other. This one did not disappoint. We get a sweet story of two slightly damaged adults finding love after pushing each other and everyone else away. I loved getting to hear Briana’s story after she was featured in Jimenez’s previous book, Part of Your World. But the star of the book for me was definitely Jacob. I don’t have quite the same level of anxiety that Jacob does, but I could see so much of me in him. I understand every single thing he did (and didn’t do). I was right there with him for every hard experience and every joy. After reading this, I am reminded of the many things that J does for my anxiety that are just a regular part of our relationship. I really think I found a keeper there. By the end of the book, I was crying happy tears. And then I read the author’s note, and I was full on sobbing. Absolutely perfect book for the perfect time. Definitely going onto my Top 10 of the year! I cannot get over how much this one really hit me. So great!

Why did I pick this one up? Oh yeah, the Bookstagram got me on this one. I should have known that I wasn’t going to lovely a college romance book between a prickly figure skater and heart-of-gold hockey player. I could have gotten past that if the book had had substance to it. But alas, this is just full of parties, drama, and hookups. I wasn’t a fan of how their relationship progressed (seriously, hookups in the back of Ubers? no thank you, I am too old for that shit). I wasn’t a fan of how Anastasia and Ryan (her former FWB) continued on even after he supposed started to exclusively date another woman. I wasn’t a fan of how shallow all the characters seemed. I just need to scratch this series off my list of future reads. Not a fan.

Only this year, Harriet and Wyn are lying through their teeth while trying not to notice how desperately they still want each other. Because the cottage is for sale and this is the last week they’ll all have together in this place. They can’t stand to break their friends’ hearts, and so they’ll play their parts. Harriet will be the driven surgical resident who never starts a fight, and Wyn will be the laid-back charmer who never lets the cracks show. It’s a flawless plan (if you look at it from a great distance and through a pair of sunscreen-smeared sunglasses). After years of being in love, how hard can it be to fake it for one week…in front of those who know you best?

Another solid contemporary romance from Emily Henry! I have enjoyed all four of her novels. This one wasn’t my favorite, but I still really enjoyed it. Her romances are not light and fluffy. They have a lot of substance and serious conversations. In this one, we get a possible second-chance romance happening. One half of the story is told in the present when we know things between Wyn and Harriet are not great. In flashback chapters, we get to see their love story (and breakup). I wanted to absolutely fall in love with the two main characters. Actually, I was conflicted throughout most of the book. I didn’t know if I wanted for them to get back together or not. It sounds like I didn’t like this book, but I really did. I love how Henry writes very realistic characters. These could be my friends. There is not completely unrealistic situation and friendships. Sometimes I want super fluffy romance and sometimes I want something with more substance. Henry is definitely my go to for substance.

I have enjoyed this series, but this particular volume just didn’t quite land with me. There was something about the pacing and the character interactions bothered me throughout the entire book. I finally figured out that my big problem was that the two main characters spend most of the book not even longing, but just as work colleagues. I got a bit bored throughout the middle. There was just too much back and forth, but not the great banter that I love. Overall there just wasn’t enough fun and steam in this one to really get me too excited.

What starts as a ploy to escape quickly spirals into genuine interest. But it doesn’t matter that they’ve finally found something special together. Athena will have her blood, and this time not even crossing the River Styx will save them…

Meh… There just wasn’t enough here for me to really enjoy. We learn just a tiny bit about Medusa and Calypso. We get some insta-love and light banter, but it wasn’t enough. My favorite part was the reveal of Hades of at the end. That bumped this novella up in my opinion. Now I have to wait for the next actual novel in the series…
