Honestly, I think that my expectations for this book were too high. The House in the Cerulean Sea was an absolutely amazing book. I loved every page. And then we waited years for the sequel. I think I was too excited and built this one up too much to truly enjoy it. In this book, we focus on Arthur’s history. I was intrigued about his mysterious past while reading the first book. This one just doesn’t seem to have enough content to actually fill out a 400 page book. I found the pacing to be very frustrating. Long stretches of the book could have been edited out as they do nothing to development characters or the plot. Really I wanted more and more from the relationships between Arthur, Linus, and the kiddos. A pretty big disappointment for me.

Okay… the premise of thus series is just silly and yet I was very intrigued by it. I was wanting something a bit more lighthearted and fun after my focus on horror manga. We dive into a book within a story and follow Eunha as she inhabits Raeliana’s body and life. The first volume was pretty slow, but that was to be expected. We needed to meet all the characters and acclimate to the world. Still I was entertained and cannot wait to keep reading.

So incredibly boring. That’s my review…

I was so very excited to get this from BOTM last year. I was hoping for a magical fantasy mystery with great characters. Instead, I got a very very very slow moving story with just a little bit of magic and no interesting characters. Luzia wasn’t going to be that interesting, but I hoped that she would be the entry point for the readers to get involved in a great expansive mystery. Most of the book is so incredibly slow and and boring. I kept wanting the plot to actually pick up. When it finally does, it includes a romance that I really never bought at all. Why include that part? No need. I finished this reluctantly.

Of course, there’s nothing Samantha loves more than proving an asshole wrong . . . unless, of course, he can admit he made a mistake.

But after one incredible and seemingly endless date, Samantha is forced to admit the truth, that her family is in crisis and any kind of relationship would be impossible. Samantha begs Xavier to forget her. To remember their night together as a perfect moment, as crushing as that may be. Only no amount of distance or time is enough to forget what's between them. And the only thing better than one single perfect memory is to make a life—and even a love—worth remembering.

I have really enjoyed all the Jimenez romances that I’ve read before this one. But this one just really did not work for me. In general, I appreciate about Jimenez balances romances and real life obstacles and difficulties. Unfortunately, this one leaned too much on the serious plot lines. I didn’t feel that there was enough romance. Our main characters spend almost the entire book apart. I want to read romances where we get to see the main characters interact in person with each other. We didn’t get that here. Instead, there’s a lot of crying about money and Samantha’s mom’s condition. Important stuff. But this read more as a women’s lit selection than romance. A rare disappointment for me.

Okay a bit of slow volume as we get more acquainted with Night Raven College. We get a little adventure involving some crystals, but overall this volume dragged a bit. I get it Ace and Deuce are fuck-ups and Riddle is a tyrant. My favorite parts involved Cater and Trey.

Bio House - Weird murdery story. Not my favorite.

Face Thief - Another weird story that I wasn’t a huge fan of.

Where the Sandman Lives - Okay this one was kinda interesting and fun.

The Devil’s Logic - Meh

The Long Hair in the Attic - My absolute favorite from the collection. Just the right amount of suspense in this one.

Scripted Love - Very forgettable.

The Reanimator’s Sword - Not a big fan of the religious bent to this story.

A Father’s Love - Nope. Not for me.

Unendurable Labyrinth - Decent

Village of the Siren - Very weird premise. I was definitely intrigued. Kinda wish that this one was longer.

Bullied - Not very excited about this one at all.

Deserter - I’ve somehow read this one before. I liked it, but not my absolute favorite.

This book started out strong. I was hoping for an interesting deep dive into women in archaeology and the issue of artifact provenance. I wanted to get into a philosophical discussion. Instead, we quickly turn to a melodramatic family conspiracy featuring a meek main character, an overbearing mother, a potentially bad husband, a tragedy, and a caricature of a real person. It just all felt very cliche by 50% of the book. I keep reading hoping that we would get back into the interesting parts of the artifacts. But nope. And then we get the reveal about Charlotte’s husband and child and I just couldn’t care any less. Blergh. I think I really need to step away from historical fiction books for awhile. They are just feeling very tired lately.

A woman walks alone at the foot of Mount Sengoku. A man appears, saying he’s been waiting for her, and invites her to a nearby village. Surprisingly, the village is covered in hairlike volcanic glass fibers, and all of it shines a bright gold. At night, when the villagers perform their custom of gazing up at the starry sky, countless unidentified flying objects come raining down on them—the opening act for the terror about to occur!

I loved the beginning of this story. The strange village and the visitor was a great setup for a creepy, otherworldly story. I loved following along as the story got stronger and stronger. But somewhere along the way, I started to lose interest. Really it was probably after the destruction of the cult, and the then the cult leader returned. It turned out that I didn’t actually care about this story or the characters. Weird turn I must say.

This collection didn’t quite work for me completely.

All of these stories were connected focused on a mysterious fog filled town full of fortune seekers. The middle really dragged, but I did like the ending.

The Mansion of Phantom Pain - Definitely my favorite! I loved the existential horror in this story.

The Rib Woman - Another great story, this time focused on body perfection.

Memories of Real Poop - Um, what did I just read? That’s going to be a no for me.

Face - Creepy creepy body horror that I love!

Library - Cute little ghost story.

From the Sea - Lacked the horror factor that I wanted.

Festival of the Dead - Low on horror, but a lovely take on ghosts.

The Play - Anything with marionettes is creepy to me.

Folk Dance - Meh.

The Kimono - Creepy kid ghosts are always great.

Snow Day - Not enough horror.

Lips - Weird and lacking a point.

Bonus Manga: Summer Graduation Trip - Actually my favorite story in the collection. This manga story was full on creepy and lovely.

A masterwork of horror from Junji Ito, unfolding on a universal scale.

Not my favorite of Ito’s stories. This one started interested, but quickly devolved into one long chase scene. I wanted more suspense and creep factor in the story. Instead, I found Remina herself to be a blank piece of paper and Remina the planet was not horrifying enough. I would have liked more time spent exploring the surface of the planet. So not my favorite.

Futon - Very creepy with a fun twist at the end.

Wooden Sprit - Meh. Not a fan of the weird sexual nature to this one.

Tomio * Red Turtleneck - Fun and gory, but the ending was weak.

Gentle Goodbye - Very sorrowful story.

Dissection-chan - Jumbled and weird, but not in the good way.

Blackbird - My favorite from the collection, very trippy and creepy.

Magami Nanakuse - Not sure what we were going for with this one.

Whispering Woman - Slow descent into madness.

And I dislike a lot of the exposition dumps. We are planning on trying to watch the anime version, but I think I am done reading the manga.

While the first JoJo was arrogant at times, he also understand honor and responsibility. His grandson is just annoying and I found it hard to root for him. The only parts that saved this volume involved Caesar. Loved him!

When started JoJo, I didn’t realize that we would be switching main characters between the parts. Once I recalibrated, I dove into this second part story and hoped to see some fun adventure. I must say that Joseph Joestar was a very arrogant and grating character in this volume. I wasn’t super excited about him, but was interested to see Pillar Man and how he is connected Dio. But the first volume was a bit more lackluster.

PhD candidate Phoebe Walsh has always been obsessed with true crime. She's even analyzing the genre in her dissertation—if she can manage to finish writing it. It's hard to find the time while she spends the summer in Florida, cleaning out her childhood home, dealing with her obnoxiously good-natured younger brother, and grappling with the complicated feelings of mourning a father she hadn't had a relationship with for years.
 
It doesn't help that she's low-key convinced that her new neighbor, Sam Dennings, is a serial killer (he may dress business casual by day, but at night he's clearly up to something). It's not long before Phoebe realizes that Sam might be something much scarier—a genuinely nice guy who can pierce her armor to reach her vulnerable heart.

I grabbed this at the retreat last year hoping for a great witty, steamy, slightly dark romance. Instead, we got a very slow-moving, low-steam, traditional romcom romance. I couldn’t really connect to the pairing of Phoebe and Sam. They started out with a silly meet cute, but then went into a holding pattern for most of the book. The story is really focused more on Phoebe and her unease with her life than the romance aspect. It read more like women’s fiction than romance. And Phoebe grated on my at many points in the story. She was just a fairly unlikeable character. I really got bored about halfway through the book. I pushed through, but even the ending did not bring it back up for me.

And we close out the Phantom Blood story arc. I enjoyed how the story went overall. It was a fun big adventure story between good and evil. But I must say the confusing art panels during action pulled me out of the story sometimes. My biggest complaint is actually that many times throughout the story, the author tells instead of shows. There was weird exposition panels mostly narrated by Speedwagon. With the ending in this volume, I wonder where the bigger story is going to go next.

Finally this story wraps up and I am just really nonplussed about the entire thing. I loved the conceit and setup of the story, but then it just felt like we wandered around for many many issues. I just couldn’t seem to care about the characters. Oh well, I finished the series.

I don’t exactly know what I was expecting with this series. But it shows up on all the greatest manga series lists and I had to put it on our list. The first volume was slightly disappointing. I realize that we had to set up the entire series and main characters. But I was expecting the supernatural and the bizarre to have more of a presence. Instead, we get a very slow moving story at first. By the end of the volume, I am still going to keep reading, but I really hope that it gets better.
