Fleeing Seattle at the onset of the zombie outbreak, he was forced to leave his daughter behind. Yet now that silence has fallen over the city, he believes that she may still be alive. And his conscience serves up a constant reminder that to be human in this grim world is to have hope—and to keep fighting.

A good collection of the first three volumes of Zombies. A bit like The Walking Dead, but not quite as severe. It was a quick read and I did enjoy it. Some very good graphics and characters. And I do appreciate the twist at the end of Volume 3. I'll have to check to see if any new comics are out.

Every morning, Melanie waits in her cell to be collected for class. When they come for her, Sergeant keeps his gun pointing at her while two of his people strap her into the wheelchair. She thinks they don't like her. She jokes that she won't bite, but they don't laugh.

Our book club selection for March and it was my pick! The main character is a zombie, or is she? The central question is very intriguing. I love books that raise interesting questions and this one centers on a big one. What does it take to be human? My favorite parts of the book were the interactions between Melanie and Ms. Justineau. Their conversations add so much to the book. Instead of just a zombie book, we get an interesting examination of the human condition. Plus I loved the explanation of what caused the zombies. The reasoning was much more plausible than most zombie origin stories. Overall I really enjoyed the book.

The new era of peace and prosperity is interrupted by a new type of enemy. One that travels amongst the walkers. One that will turn whispers of their appearance to screams.

Happened upon this volume at the library two days ago. Definitely checked it out right then and there and read it today. A nice addition to the storyline even if it was very limited in scope. This volume shows more of the mysterious new enemy as well as more of Carl, but that's about it. We don't get much more from other characters. I liked the volume, but wished the story would progress a bit faster.

Wow! First I had remind myself of where the story left off since I last read a volume back in 2013. Once I refreshed my memory, I realized just how scary Negan was from the last volume. And in this volume he lives up to some of his threats. Scary dude. I like how the series is now more about different groups of people trying to get along instead of just about the zombies. That could have gotten boring really fast.

Obviously this volume is more of a prelude to the coming war with Negan. Although we do get some interesting insight inside some of the other character, especially Ezekiel. Very interesting guy...

The conclusion to the big war was epic. I think this might have even been better than the war with the Governor. Maybe... At any rate, it was a nice conclusion to a chapter in the saga.

This volume lures you in with a nice little storyline about new additions to the community. But somewhere in the middle you start to wonder if there isn't something else out there. That bit of dread stays with you throughout the rest of the volume. And then the reveal at the end shows you that the dread you felt was real, very real.  Quite an explosive volume to end on...

Once a zombie, always a zombie?

Dave and Sarah are pretty happy in the Middle-of-Nowhere, Montana. They’ve done their part in saving the world (kind of) and now they’re settling in for a long life of killing straggler zombies. Well, they think that’s what they’re doing until a helicopter lands on their front lawn with old friends Nicole Nessing and Robbie “The Kid” on board. They propose a dangerous plan: Dave and Sarah must return to Seattle and use Dave’s Superpowers to help with the final stages of a formula that will not only wipe out most of the zombies, but innocluate humans against the virus.

Going back to Seattle was never in the plan. Especially since Sarah has a few secrets of her own that could change her marriage, increase the danger they’re facing and even alter the future they’re so desperately trying to save.

A fitting end to the series, but it felt a bit rushed.  I would have like a bit more drawn out storyline and action.  Maybe a bit more character development.  It felt a little odd to see all the old characters in one place, but of course it's all a plot device.  I did like the idea of returning to the scene of the crime, so to speak.  And the big surprise... guessed it in about the first 5 pages.  Overall, I still love traveling the zombie filled west with David and Sarah.  I was just wishing for a little more something to give them a proper send-off.

A cute little zombie story to add to my Living with the Dead series.  I was super excited to snap this one up on Kindle for cheap.  Unfortunately, it is so short, I just couldn't give it 5 stars.  I did really love it.  The characters were fun.  The storyline had a ton of potential.  It just wasn't enough to really make me love it.

This was a creepy creepy little story.  I was expecting a steampunk adventure like Boneshaker.  Instead, I got a steampunk horror story.  This one definitely pushed my creep out buttons.  It involved something that looks human, but isn't human.  Holy crap!  Nice little story, but I really would have liked more...

Maternal love faces formidable challenges in this stellar steampunk tale. In an alternate 1880s America, mad inventor Leviticus Blue is blamed for destroying Civil War–era Seattle. When Zeke Wilkes, Blue's son, goes into the walled wreck of a city to clear his father's name, Zeke's mother, Briar Wilkes, follows him in an airship, determined to rescue her son from the toxic gas that turns people into zombies (called rotters and described in gut-churning detail). When Briar learns that Seattle still has a mad inventor, Dr. Minnericht, who eerily resembles her dead husband, a simple rescue quickly turns into a thrilling race to save Zeke from the man who may be his father. Intelligent, exceptionally well written and showcasing a phenomenal strong female protagonist who embodies the complexities inherent in motherhood, this yarn is a must-read for the discerning steampunk fan.

I had heard mixed things about this series, but I found that I really enjoyed the story of Briar and Zeke and their journey inside the wall.  Somehow I didn't realize that each book in the series is set in the same world, but doesn't follow the exact same characters.  My understanding is that characters overlap.  Once I understood how the story was structured, I liked this one even better.  I was afraid that there just wasn't enough story of Briar and Zeke to continue for six books and a novella.  Thankfully that is not the case.

As for this volume, it started off a bit slow, but once the action started, it never stopped until the last pages. While the rotters were a good villain, they stayed mostly in the background.  We quickly learn that the living inhabitants of the walled city are much more dangerous.  I loved the simultaneous paths of Briar and Zeke.  I loved when they eventually interacted with the same colorful characters.  I was rooting for their success throughout the entire book.  Overall, it was a very satisfying steampunk adventure novel.  I've got the novella on tap for my next read!

Still in her twenties, Cash has watched her friends die, only to walk again. An office worker with few survival skills, she joins up with Clutch, a grizzled Army veteran with PTSD. Together, they flee the city and struggle through the nine circles of hell, with nothing but Clutch's military experience and Cash's determination to live. As they fight to survive in the zombie inferno, they quickly discover that nowhere is safe from the undead...or the living.

I started this book mainly because I needed another break from The Count of Monte Cristo.  Plus, it was on my iPad which meant I could read during night feedings.  To my surprise, I really enjoyed the book.  It's a good fast paced zombie thriller with interesting characters.  I really loved Cash and Clutch and Jase.  The zombies were scary and the human villains even scarier.  I loved the progression of the plot and even how it ended.  There's a nontraditional ending, but it completely fits with the story and the situation.  I love that we don't get a cliche.  My only complaint is the "romance" between the two main characters.   I had hoped that the author wouldn't go there, but she did.  For the most part, it wasn't a huge turnoff.  Although the sex scene seemed very out of place with the rest of the novel.  I think that couldn't have been edited out and nothing would be lost.  Overall, I really enjoyed this free ebook.  I might even pick up (and even pay) for the next book releasing this coming year.

How I Got It: iPad read

It was the summer of 2014, and the true horrors of the Rising were only just beginning to reveal themselves. Fans from all over the world gathered in San Diego, California for the annual comic book and media convention, planning to forget about the troubling rumors of new diseases and walking dead by immersing themselves in a familiar environment. Over the course of five grueling days and nights, it became clear that the news was very close to home...and that most of the people who picked up their badges would never make it out alive.

Ran across this novella being reviewed on another blogger's site.  I loved the original Newsflesh trilogy, so I had to download this one right away.  And during the FrightFall Readathon seemed like a great time to read a little zombie story.  Those who have read the trilogy know how this story is going to end.  We know all about The Rising.  But the story is written so well that I kept seeing glimpses of hope and survival until the bitter end.  It's a great little short read to introduce you to The Rising or just as an extension of the original trilogy.  Love, love, love!

• During the last few weeks leading up to the film's release, Laika sent 49 packages to 49 people (including Neil Gaiman and Kevin Smith). Each package consisted of a wooden crate from "Blithe Hollow" full of "grave dirt" which recipients had to dig through to unearth a coffin. Inside the coffin was one of the seven cursed zombies, complete with background information and name.

Review: 

How did I miss this movie?  This is the cutest, most inventive animated film that I've seen in a long time.  I love the style, the storyline, the characters.  I loved everything about it.  I must caution that it is not for the faint of heart.  It may be animated, but it's rated PG for a reason.  There are some great scares in this one.  Plus you get witches, zombies, and ghosts.  What more could you ask for?

A random find from the library, but it turns out that I had originally had this book on my Goodreads TBR shelf.  Imagine that!  This is a bit of a run-of-the-mill zombie survival book.  Nothing too new or exciting, but it did keep my attention for a day.  The book started as a blog published in Spain in 2007.  It was translated into English and published as a novel in 2012.  While the action scenes are nice, some of the writing seems very detached.  I don't know if this is due to the translation or just how the passages were written in the first place.  I was not super impressed.

Oh my!  I grabbed this on a whim and I have been rewarded with an amazing little comic.  I love the idea of vamlpirism as a "cure" to a zombie apocalypse.  But this one has the added twist of class warfare and a secret bigger than everyone.  I loved the twists and turns of the story; not sure where it was all leading until the end.  And we are treated to some very interesting characters.  Loved Suttle and Sapphire was a real treat.  Definitely an interesting read for an afternoon.

I picked this up at the library largely due to the fact that I love the comic series.  But this book just didn't really do it for me.  It was too brutal, too full of villains, too much.  I just couldn't get past my utter revulsion at Philip, Brian, and Nick.  The only one I could feel for was Penny, but we all know how she ends up.  I thought this would be an interesting side story to the comic series, but turns out I really didn't want to know how The Governor became The Governor.

He may occasionally eat people, but he’d rather be riding abandoned airport escalators, listening to Sinatra in the cozy 747 he calls home, or collecting souvenirs from the ruins of civilization.

And then he meets a girl.

First as his captive, then his reluctant house guest, Julie is a blast of living color in R’s gray landscape, and something inside him begins to bloom. He doesn’t want to eat this girl—although she looks delicious—he wants to protect her. But their unlikely bond will cause ripples they can’t imagine, and their hopeless world won’t change without a fight.

Been meaning to pick this one up for awhile.  I finally snapped it up from the library and was pleasantly surprised.  I expected a fairly standard YA novel.  I expected sappy characters and ridiculous inner monologues.  Instead, I got a great quirky zombie novel.  Everything about the characters and storyline felt new and shiny.  Even the take on zombie lore was new.  I loved the dichotomy between the fleshies and the boneys.   I loved R and Julie and Nora and even M.  I read this book in one day sitting by the pool and it was a lovely afternoon.  Definitely a recommend.

Movie:

Usually I hate voice overs in movies, but for reason this one just works.  Right away, the movie dove right into the book with minor changes.  To be fair, there are changes, but they are small ones for the most part.  We lose some of the conversations and actions of M and the other zombies at the airport.  We also lose the piece with R's wife and children.  The big omission that I wished to see was more of the boneys.  I wanted to visualize the "church" and see the boneys with their Polaroids.  I wanted to witness the wedding.  But overall, I still really enjoyed the movies.

After the slightly less exciting Volumes 15 and 16, the story is back on track.  This volume contained actual surprises and action sequences.  People we cared about died.  New plans were formulated.  I feel like things are finally back on track.  I'm excited to be reading again.  Unfortunately, I have to wait until Volume 18 is released in June to see what happens.  Loving the big cliffhanger!

I'm still loving the series, although I will admit that some of the characters bug me.  For example, at times Andrea is strong and independent.  She knows exactly what to do and how to act.  At other times, she is just so darn insecure.  I want to have her killed off.  I much prefer Michonne, even with the look into her emotions.  But I still enjoy seeing what happens to the survivors.  I'm keeping with the series until the end, or at least for another couple of volumes...

I'm coming these two books as I read them back-to-back.  I do love my zombies.  And these two volumes did not disappoint.  I didn't know where the story would go after the events from the prison.  Thankfully new adventures await our survivors.  I love the addition of new acquaintances.  My favorite by far is Abraham.  He fills a void; I like that.  I sped through these books and I'm sure I will speed through the next two books.  I have those in my ottoman just waiting to be opened.

Fun fun!  I am really loving these quick action adventure reads.  I am extra excited that this series is all steampunky goodness.  Harper has the right mix of character and action to make me keep reading.  The characters are intriguing.  I especially loved the addition of Feng and Dodd to this volume.  Harper's characters expand and grow, but they still retain their core of being.  I loved continuing to follow Alice and Gavin (with Dr. Clef, Click, and Kemp) on their journey to China to bring about the end of the Clockwork Plague and a cure for Gavin.  Plus, we get great stopovers in Luxembourg, Berlin, and Kiev. The encounter with the Gontas and Zalzinaks was fabulous.  I can't wait to see what happens in the next volume.
