Macey Gardella is a typical young woman of the Roaring Twenties: she works a job, has her own flat, and loves to dance the Charleston. But when a mysterious man named Sebastian Vioget informs her she belongs to a family of vampire hunters, Macey is stunned and disbelieving.

Yet, strange and frightening things begin to happen, and when Macey comes face-to-face with one of the fanged creatures, she has no choice but to believe Sebastian. And when she learns his own soul depends on her willingness to carry forth the family legacy and hunt the undead, Macey capitulates and joins the fight.

As she begins to learn about her new life, Macey meets the handsome newspaper reporter known as Grady--who seems to know more about vampires than he should. When he begins to ask too many questions, she has to juggle her strong attraction to him with the need for secrecy.

I picked this up because of the strength of the first Gardella series.  I loved reading about Victoria, Max, and Sebastian's adventures.  This volume doesn't quite live up to the first ones, but I did enjoy reading it.  I loved the setting: 1920s Chicago.  The gangsters, the speakeasies, and the flappers all added a lovely atmosphere for the novel.  I loved the Sebastian and Wayren as they were great characters from the first series.  However, I an not completely sold on Macey and the other newcomers.  Macey is a bit too childish, at least in this first book.  I would like her have a bit more sense of the world.  I mean she lives in gangster era Chicago.  You would think she would know not to wander the streets alone after dark.  I am also not a huge fan of Chas and Grady.  They just seem to be very flat characters right now.  I hope that as the series progresses the character also grow and change.  Otherwise, I might just have to give this series up...

Started out a bit slow for my tastes, but got really good towards the end.  This book is a nice mix between a fluffy romance, a mystery, and an adventure story.  We get a couple of twists and turns that threw me for a couple of pages.  They were interesting twists that added to the fun of the story.  The characters are good, although I wished to see a stronger female lead.  Callie was a bit to much of a wilting flower until the last 100 pages or so.  Trevelyan was the stereotypical rogue male lead, but I still really liked him.  One of the best characters was Trevelyan's mother the Duchess.  She was interesting and always knew more than she let on.  Overall, I really enjoyed reading Lessons in French.  I will have to add Kinsale to my authors to watch for at clearance sales list.

A cute little zombie story to add to my Living with the Dead series.  I was super excited to snap this one up on Kindle for cheap.  Unfortunately, it is so short, I just couldn't give it 5 stars.  I did really love it.  The characters were fun.  The storyline had a ton of potential.  It just wasn't enough to really make me love it.

Hmmm... This is one of those free books that I happened to pick up on Kindle.  So glad I did not actually pay for this book. I was thoroughly bored the entire time I was reading.   The characters are not very entertaining.  The plotline is very predictable.  The sermons are seemingly out of place and awkward.  The ending is a complete "cliffhanger" but we all know how the story will end.  I can't believe I actually finished this one, but I did.  So, first book of the year completed.  Not starting on a high note.  Hope things get better...

In this groundbreaking, bestselling graphic memoir, Alison Bechdel charts her fraught relationship with her late father. In her hands, personal history becomes a work of amazing subtlety and power, written with controlled force and enlivened with humor, rich literary allusion, and heartbreaking detail.

Distant and exacting, Bruce Bechdel was an English teacher and director of the town funeral home, which Alison and her family referred to as the "Fun Home." It was not until college that Alison, who had recently come out as a lesbian, discovered that her father was also gay. A few weeks after this revelation, he was dead, leaving a legacy of mystery for his daughter to resolve.

Going in, I didn't really know what to expect from this novel.  I was expecting a straight forward memoir, but instead got a wonderful mix of literary insight and family memories. Following Bechdel's narrative feels almost like an intrusion on her private self. She bares all as we move from her early childhood to ruminations on sexuality and the complexities of family and identity.   In many ways, it reminded me of Persepolis.  Instead of making an entertaining version of life, the reader gets an honest brutal look at life and growing up.  Definitely a powerful read.

The Color Purple by Alice Walker

How I Got It: I own it

Alice Walker's Pulitzer Prize winning novel The Color Purple is a tale of personal empowerment which opens with a protagonist Celie who is at the bottom of America's social caste. A poor, black, ugly and uneducated female in the America's Jim Crow South in the first half of the 20th century, she is the victim of constant rape, violence and misogynistic verbal abuse. Celie cannot conceive of an escape from her present condition, and so she learns to be passive and unemotional. But The Color Purple eventually demonstrates how Celie learns to fight back and how she discovers her true sexuality and her unique voice. By the end of the novel, Celie is an empowered, financially-independent entrepreneur/landowner, one who speaks her mind and realizes the desirability of black femaleness while creating a safe space for herself and those she loves.

One of those "been on my list forever" books.  I finally picked it up even after being cautioned by many people that this book is very difficult to read.  They were right.  It was very difficult to read through Celie's struggles.  It was difficult to keep my emotions in check.  It was difficult to not hate many of the characters.  So, was it worth reading?  I have mixed feelings about this.  While I loved Walker's focus on themes and issues, I did not love the style.  I was very distracted by the style and language used (misspelling, bad word choices).  Because of all my distractions, I don't think I fully connected to the novel.  Interesting book, but it's not going to appear on any of my best of lists.

Movie:

The movie is even more difficult to get through than the book.  I had to force myself to watch until the end.  The themes are so serious, I can't say that I loved the movie.  In that way, I put this into the same category as Schindler's List.  I feel like I've added to my experiences by watching, but it's not something I would rush out and see again.  My only big critictism of the movie is it's elimination of all lesbianism.  The part of the storyline seemed extremely important to Celie's growth.

This series has been sitting on my shelf for at least two years.  I'm glad I finally got around to reading it.  Ill Wind was a great introduction to Joanne and the world of the Weather Wardens.  Right away, I knew I would like Joanne's no nonsense outlook and fierce determination.  It was refreshing from the damsels in distress women I have read in the past few months.  I needed a fierce warrior.  Sure she has her vulnerable side, but that's only shown to people she thinks she can trust.  (Of course, that doesn't always work out so well).  And the world of the Djinns and Weather Warden is just too fun.  I love the idea of people helping to control Mother Nature from wiping out us humans.  It's a great idea.  The side characters are all great, but I especially loved David.  I thought something was odd the minute he popped into her life.  I didn't realize how odd until much later.  I can't wait to read more in the next volume.

In truth, I read this because it was free in iBooks and I needed something short to read in between colossal books.  I didn't have very high hopes, but I was pleasantly surprised after reading.  This is an interesting erotic retelling of Beauty and the Beast.  Except in this one the roles are reversed.  Dex is a great knight in shining armor and Shelby has a wonderful back and forth nature.  I really liked the storyline.  It was a nice short read while traveling back home.

We are in Tehran in 1958, and Nasser Ali Khan, one of Iran’s most revered tar players, discovers that his beloved instrument is irreparably damaged. Though he tries, he cannot find one to replace it, one whose sound speaks to him with the same power and passion with which his music speaks to others. In despair, he takes to his bed, renouncing the world and all its pleasures, closing the door on the demands and love of his wife and his four children. Over the course of the week that follows, his family and close friends attempt to change his mind, but Nasser Ali slips further and further into his own reveries: flashbacks and flash-forwards (with unexpected appearances by the likes of the Angel of Death and Sophia Loren) from his own childhood through his children’s futures. And as the pieces of his story slowly fall into place, we begin to understand the profundity of his decision to give up life.

Interesting story...  I must admit that I liked her Persepolis series much better than this one.  But this volume does have some redeeming qualities.  I loved the look into the head of Nasser Ali.  Instead of a linear story, we get flashbacks and almost stream of consciousness.  It's an interesting choice of style.  I liked it.  And the drawings were amazing as ever.  The stark black and white with figures really lends powers to the story.
