Bout of Books Readathon 2.0

From On a Book Bender:

Due to popular demand, we are going to have another Bout of Books read-a-thon.  I took the feedback that I received after the first Bout of Books read-a-thon, and have made some changes to see if they work better.

  • Bout of Books will run from 12:01am 10/24 through 11:59 pm 10/30 (your time zone)
  • Read as much as you can whenever you can.  I know that this Bout of Books is close on the heels of the Dewey Read-a-Thon; this was an oversight on my part, but if you plan on reading AT ALL, please sign up.  The only person you are competing against here is yourself.  There is no pressure.
  • Bout of Books should be about networking with fellow bloggers in addition to reading.  You were going to read that week anyway, right?  Bout of Books gives you the opportunity to share your reading experience with other readers.
  • Use #boutofbooks on Twitter to update people on your progress and what you are reading.  Feel free to follow me (@BookBender) and your co-hosts (links to follow) for Bout of Books information, but please do NOT @ me (or the co-hosts) with all your updates.  This happened during the last Bout of Books, and it was unnecessary and flooded people’s timelines.  Using #boutofbooks should suffice.  I will try to repopulate the Bout of Books Twitter list.
  • Sign-up (beginning 10/6), the master list of participants, official schedule (up by 10/20?), and wrap-up post will all be here on my blog.  I will also give people the opportunity to post their read-a-thon goals and possible books to read.  My Bout of Books “starting line” post will go up on 10/22.
  • Each day during Bout of Books has a different co-host.  They are in charge for the day, and will offer you a place for you to share your daily progress if you wish as well as a challenge.  Please note that co-hosting is an experiment and I am hoping you will give me feedback at the end of the Bout of Books regarding your experience.
  • Your co-hosts (with blog and Twitter links) and the tentative challenge schedule are as follows:

10/24: Shirley @ Creative Deeds (@creativedeeds) — Guess the Love Triangle Challenge

10/25: Darla @ D for Darla’s Definite Reads (@DforDarla) — Dream Cast: Book to Movie Challenge

10/26: Joli @ Actin’ Up with Books (@ActinUpwb) — Book Spine Poetry Challenge

10/27: Erin @ Let’s Evaluate — Guess the Cover Challenge

10/28: Jen @ Not Now…I’m Reading! (@NotNowImReading) — Match the UF sidekick with the hero/heroine challenge

10/29: Christi @ Smitten with Reading (@ChristiSnow) — Bout of Books Babble Challenge (creating a haiku)

10/30: Vivienne @ Muse Books (@musesong) — Witchcraft in Popular Fiction Challenge

I'm so excited to do this readathon again.  I loved it the first time.  I'm going to love it the second time around.  I participated in the Dewey readathon, so anything I didn't finish for that it going on my list for this one.  I will probably be slow to start, but hope that the end of the week is productive.  I know I won't top my record from last time (13books!) because I am now working full time.  But I'm going to try anyway.

My goals:

  • Read at least 5 books
  • Read at least 1 Net Galley book (TBD)
  • Review all books read
  • Participate in at least 2 mini challenges
  • Complete at least 1 reading challenge
  • Read at least 2 hours a day

Dewey Update #5 (Final Update)

This is it.  I am beat.  I really didn't plan all that well and am ready to be done reading.  I've developed a headache in the last two hours which hasn't helped.  I haven't felt awesome all day.  I wonder if I'm coming down with something.  Anyway, I've decided to throw in the towel.  I've been up for many hours, reading for 8.  I finished three books.  Three books that took 5 spots in my reading challenges.  I participated in 3 mini challenges.  I think I have a respectable showing for my first 24-Hour Readathon.  I want to do this again in April.  But before then I seriously need to think about my game plan a bit more.  See you then!

Dewey Update #2

Second update.  Only a few hours in for me (7 for the readathon), but I've made good progress.  I finished my first book and reviewed it with updates to my reading challenges page.  I've also participated in two mini challenges.  Here's my second one from Lisas's World of Books:

Top 5  What are the 5 books you are looking forward to in the next few months or really into next year?

  1. Reread of The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy by Douglas Adams -- Can't wait to laugh again the reidiculousness.
  2. Miss Peregrine's Home for Peculiar Children by Ransom Riggs -- Just won the book from a previous contest.  I've been wanting to read it since it came out!
  3. Timeless by Gail Carriger -- I started the Parasol Protectorate series last month and own the rest.  I can't wait for Timeless to be released so I can grab that one too.
  4. Hand of Isis by Jo Graham -- I loved the Black Ships and can't wait to read the second book set in that world.
  5. The Magicians by Lev Grossman -- J has been bugging me to read this one for awhile. It's sitting here waiting to be picked up.

Dewey Update #1

Late start to the readathon.  I overslept!!!  Oh well, got started a bit ago.  This is my first check-in.

1) Where are you reading from today? Trying to first finish Brave New World that I started two days ago.  It's a reread, but I haven't revisisted it in awhile.

2) Three random facts about me… I love pickles, have a fear of clowns (and really anything human like but not human), and hate my first name (hence the moniker TFrances).

3) How many books do you have in your TBR pile for the next 24 hours? Too many... 13.  I know I won't get to all, but it's nice to have options.

4) Do you have any goals for the read-a-thon (i.e. number of books, number of pages, number of hours, or number of comments on blogs)? Just to read as much as I can.  Hopefully J keeps himself occupied.

Number of books I’ve read: 0

Dewey's 24-Hour Readathon 2011

What is Dewey’s 24-Hour Read-a-thon? For 24 hours, we read books, post to our blogs about our reading, and visit other readers’ blogs. We also participate in mini-challenges throughout the day. It happens twice a year, in April and in October.

It was created by the beloved Dewey (her blog has since been taken down, so the link won’t work). The first one was held in October 2007. Dewey died in late 2008. We’re still saddened by her absence, but the show must go on. The read-a-thon was renamed to honor its founder in 2009.

I'm very excited to enter my first 24-hour readathon.  I have a pile of books, food in the house, my laptop with power cord, a blanket, and music.  I think I'm ready to jump in.

My goals:

  • Read 3 books
  • Read at least one Net Galley book
  • Review all books read
  • Participate in mini challenge

My TBR pile:

  • Brave New World by Aldous Huxley
  • The Boys: Vol. 6
  • Take a Chance on Me by Jill Mansell
  • The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy by Douglas Adams
  • Penelope's Daughter by Lauren Corona
  • Night World Vol. 1 by L.J. Smith

Thoughts/Comments: I had an all day training, so no reading today.  The training wasn't as bad as I thought it would be, but it still was a long 8 hours.  At some point I developed a headache.  I might do some reading tonight.  Hopefully.  We'll see.

Frightful Fall Readathon Update 4

Time Read Today:  3 hours
Time Read Total: 11 hours 9 minutes

Pages Read Today: 276
Pages Read Total: 1247

Books Read Today: 1.3
Books Read Total: 6.3

Thoughts/Comments: I finished The Boys: Get Some and started Accidentally Dead.  I'm only 60 pages into Accidentally Dead, so I haven't really decided what I feel about it yet.  Slow reading day.  Work was a big crazy (lots nd lots of meetings and people coming in) and I had a baby shower to attend after work.  Tomorrow I have an all day training but get off work early.  I plan on finished Dead and at least one more Boys volume.

Mini Challenge from The Book Retreat:

1. My mini challenge is for you to choose a character from a book you have read or are reading during this read-a-thon, and pick a Halloween costume for them. What would they want to dress up as for Halloween? A vampire? A superhero? A sexy pirate? Think about the character and what you think they would want to be if they were heading off to a Halloween party.1. Identify the character and the book they appear in.

2. Tell what kind of costume they'd choose.

3. Explain WHYyou chose that costume: What is is about the character that makes you think they'd want that type of costume? For an extra point toward winning the prize, share a picture you've found online that shows what you think the character would look like in their costume (or create your own picture if you're so inclined). You can only enter one character per book, but if you read multiple books during the read-a-thon, you can enter a character for each one you read.

My answers:

  • Marty Andrews from The Accidental Werewolf would be a fairy princess.  As she has now been turned into a werewolf, she misses her blond hair and pastel color wheel.  She would want to be able to live that etheral beauty of a fairy princess at least for one day.
  • Wee Hughie from The Boys would be a ninja.  Hughie has just joined the band of superhero police.  He's very innocent and insecure and having a hard time using his genetically altered strength and reflexes.  If he could hide behind a ninja mask, I'm sure it would make him feel more confident.
  • Angela from The Elephant Mountains would be an angel.  Early in the book, Angela's entire life has been taken from her.  She professes that everything that has happened is part of God's plan.  If she dresses up for Halloween, it would be as an angel to show her devotion to God.
  • Jack from Jack of Fables would definitely be a well-dressed gangster.  He always wants money and power, but doesn't want to get them through legal means, so a gangster is perfect.  And I could totally see him a pinstriped suit with fedora and cigar as accessories.

Time Read Total: 8 hours 9 minutes

Pages Read Today: 252

Books Read Total: 5

Thoughts/Comments: I finished The Elephant Mountains by Scott Ely and The Boys: The Name of the Game.  Two great reads... but work got a little crazy and I had a headache.  So it ended up not being the best reading day.  Never fear, I have big plans for Thursday. That is, until I have to go to a baby shower.

Frightful Fall Readathon Mini Challenge #1

From Castle Macabre:
First of all, I want to apologize for the late posting of this mini-challenge.  Hosting a read-a-thon is a lot of work.  No wonder Dewey's 24 hour needs so much help! I know why now.  =O)  Anyway, since it is so late, I'm going to make this relatively simple.  Also, since I'm doing three mini-challenges this week (and I had more prize donations, so I might be throwing in a little scary trivia contest.  We'll see!), each one will run for two days.  This one will kind of overlap with the next one because I posted so late.  So this mini-challenge will be open until Wednesday at 10pm CST.

All you have to do is go online to an image site (Google images, photobucket, etc.) and find the scariest image you can.  Post the link in the comments and as they come in, I will put the images up in the post so everyone can see them (a nod to vvb32 reads...she does this on her blog all the time).  If you want to also do a blog post with the image, that is totally up to you.  All I ask is that you leave the link in the comments.  At 10pm tomorrow night, I will choose 3 winners randomly and each of the winners will pick a prize from the prize page.  Fun, fun, fun!!!

Once I post these, I will never be able to look at my post again.  Notice that they are all related.  Can you guess my phobias?  My scary pics:

Thoughts/Comments: Finished The Accidental Werewolf.  Great fun read.  Have some good looking books on tap for tomorrow.

So here goes the deets:

**Look to the left...the first item that you see is your only weapon during the Zombie Apocalypse*** (Don't cheat and try to find something cool! If the first thing you see are socks then that's what you got!)

The only thing I see to my left is a plate.  A small salad plate.  I could possibly use it to hit a zombie upside the head, but I really don't think it's going to be a very good weapon.  To survive, I really need to find some good blunt objects.  A cricket bat would be awesome!  I now have the urge to go online and buy a cricket bat to have on hand.  Just in case!

Frightful Fall ReadaThon Oct. 3-9

From Castle Macabre:

It's almost that time again...my next seasonal read-a-thon! I usually host these at my main blog, The True Book Addict, but, as promised to the participants of my summer read-a-thon, I am doing a spooky theme in honor of the scariest time of year--the Halloween season.  So I decided that hosting it here on my new horror blog would be quite appropriate.

Details

  • Dates:  Monday, October 3 at 12:00am through Sunday, October 9 at 11:59pm (your time zone).
  • To go along with the scary theme, this time I will have a requirement.  You must read at least ONE scary book during the read-a-thon.  If you are not a horror fan, then make it a thriller or a mystery, as long as the book has some kind of spooky premise to it.  Those of you who fulfill this requirement, and sign in at the starting line, will automatically be entered in the participant giveaway.
  • Read as much or as little as you want.  You do not have to join in all week.  Start during the week or just do the weekend.  It's your decision.  Just be sure to sign in at the starting line when you start reading.
  • I will be hosting a scary themed mini-challenge and hopefully we will have other mini-challenges and/ or giveaways (see note above).
  • Our hashtag for Twitter will be #frightfall
Excited to start another readathon.  I haven't done one in a few months.  Unfortunately I have work all next week, but I'm hoping to get some reading done each night and during my lunch breaks.  I also have a baby shower on Thursday night and an all day crop on Saturday.  This will put a dent in my reading time.  But still, I am hopeful!
My goals:
  • Read at least 5 books
  • Review all books read
  • Update once a day
  • Participate in the mini challenges/contests
TBR List:
  • Jack of Fables: Americana
  • Fables: Wolves
  • Heat Wave by Richard Castle
  • Accidentally Dead by Dakota Cassidy
  • Accidentally Catty by Dakota Cassidy
  • The Affinity Bridge by George Mann
  • Night World Vol. 1 by L.J. Smith
