UnRead Shelf Plans

For April, the prompt is the book you most recently acquired. I’ve gotten a few books in the past month; it was my birthday month. I decided to choose one of those books and I’m going with All the Stars and Teeth by Adalyn Grace. And here’s my ambitious UnRead Shelf TBR pile for April:

IMG_9194.jpeg

Movies watched

  • Little Monsters - Delightful zombie movie!

  • Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker - The more I think about it, the less I like this movie.

  • The Gentleman - Thankfully this was a return to the good Guy Ritchie movies.

  • Birds of Prey - This was a lot more fun than I thought it would be.

TV Shows watched

  • Last Week Tonight - We caught up before the show had to change format.

  • The Magicians S5 - Last season… it has gutted me.

  • Doctor Who - Decent season finale.

  • Broadchurch S2 - Finally getting this season started.

  • Superstore - We caught up.

Comments - Being forced to stay at home has definitely helped my reading life, but has been a detriment to my mental health. I need a better balance. Hoping to focus on picking books that I will enjoy (not “required” reading) and get myself in a better place.

UnRead Shelf Plans

For March, the prompt is the book that’s been on your unread shelf the longest. That would probably be 1776 by David McCullough.

Movies watched

  • The Spy Who Dumped Me - This was much funnier than I thought it was going to be.

  • Knives Out - Oh so good! Loved this one.

  • Jojo Rabbit - Very touching movie.

TV Shows watched

  • Decline and Fall S1 - We love our Jack Whitehall.

  • Doctor Who S12 - So close to the end of the season!

  • Broadchurch S1 - We finished the first season finally. Oh so intense!

  • The Magicians S5 - This season has been so good so far.

  • Outlander S2 - I finally restarted this season. I will finish it at some point.

  • Last Week Tonight S7 - Yeah! John Oliver is back!

Comments - It was a weird month with prepping to move houses, but I ended up reading 15 books. Decent showing… Next month I need to do some clean up of the books I meant to read in January and February.

UnRead Shelf Plans

For February, the prompt is a book gifted to you. I’m putting Children of Blood and Bone by Tomi Adeyemi as my choice. As for the strategies, February is all about weeding out books you don’t want anymore. This is perfect as this month is our moving month. I’m hoping to unload at least 5 books from my currently Unread Shelf.

Movies watched

  • Zombieland 2 - Such a delight to watch!

  • Strangers on a Train - Great classic Hitchcock movie!

  • Double Indeminity - Another great classic movie.

  • Freaks - Pretty interesting scifi movie.

  • Burglar - J’s pick. I had never seen this one. Funnier than I thought it was going to be.

  • Last Christmas - The entire plot was super spoiled in the trailer, but I still enjoyed it.

TV Shows watched

  • The Bachelor S24 - Ugh! The manufactured drama this season has been dialed way up. Not sure I like this.

  • Doctor Who S12 - Jodie as the Doctor is really growing on me.

  • His Dark Materials S1 - Finally! We get to where everything was leading to. So good…

  • The Mandalorian S1 - My my that was quite a season ender.

  • Below Deck S3 - Guilty pleasure show

  • Below Deck: Med S1 - Ditto

  • The Good Place S4 - Oh Goodness! I can’t believe this show is over. Love it so much.

  • Superstore S5 - Continue to enjoy this little sitcom.

  • Letterkenny S8 - Thank you for returning to comedic gold for the second half of the season!

  • War of the Worlds BBC 2019 Mini series - I really liked that this one was sent in Edwardian times. Not such a fan of the weird timeline for the present sections.

  • The Magicians S5 - I’m really intrigued about where they are going this season.

  • The Witcher S1 - We sped through the 8 episodes of this season. Loved it! I can’t wait for season two.

Comments - Thankfully I started out the year strong with my reading. I often top 20 books in the first month, but I’ve slowed down my reading in favor of larger books and specific ones I want to read. Moving to mood reading again will hopefully results in a better reading year in terms of quality if not also quantity.

UnRead Shelf Plans

For January, the prompt is to read any unread book from my shelf. I imagine something will strike my fancy. As for the strategies, there were three tasks for this month.

  1. Count your books - Currently there are 120 unread books sitting in the theater room bookshelf. I’m not counting any ebooks or the books currently residing in the attic. Figure I will focus on those books first.

  2. Library and book buying ban - I’m excepting my book club books and anything I already have on hold for the library.

  3. Make a Top 10 to read for 2020 - I spent some time and make my short list:

    1. Alexander Hamilton by Ron Chernow

    2. Uprooted by Naomi Novik

    3. Across the Universe by Beth Revis

    4. In the Hurricane’s Eye by Nathaniel Philbrick

    5. Scandalous Women of the Ton Series by Nicola Cornick

    6. Children of Blood and Bone by Tomikas Adeyemi

    7. The Invisible Library by Genevieve Cogman

    8. Well Met by Jen DeLuca

    9. Swamplandia by Karen Russell

    10. Nothing to See Here by Kevin Wilson

Movies watched

  • Ready or Not - Love love loved this movie!

  • Christmas at Pemberley Manor - So dumb, but I do like my Holiday romances. I just couldn’t get over the male lead. I kept conflating him with his not-so-nice character on UnReal.

  • Hail Satan - Very interesting documentary. I am fascinated.

  • 6 Underground - Terrible movie. Even Ryan Reynolds could not save it.

TV Shows watched

  • Daybreak S1 - We finished this season and loved every minute of it! And oh that cliffhanger was brutal! Really hoping we get a season 2.

  • American Gods S1 - Slowly making our way through this first season.

  • Below Deck S1-2 - My mom keeps begging me to watch this one. Finally started after catching a few episodes at the gym.

  • A Discovery of Witches S1 - Finally got around to this one! Oh so good!

  • The Mandalorian S1 - Yes!

Comments - Wooo!!! What a reading year! I ended up reading 255 books in 2019. Hoping to carry some momentum into 2020.

Movies watched

  • Set It Up - A very enjoyable romantic comedy.

  • Echo in the Canyon - Awesome music documentary.

  • The Dark Tower - Ooof. Not great. Very confusing… and I read the books.

  • Bedazzled (1967) - Never saw this one. Really enjoyed Peter Cook in this one.

  • Fyre Fraud and Fyre - We watched both documentaries to compare and contrast. I think Fyre Fraud was more effective.

  • London Has Fallen - Oof. That was terrible.

  • Angel Has Fallen - Slightly better than London Has Fallen, but still terrible. Goodness. We need pick some better movies.

  • Pride, Prejudice and Mistletoe - Silly Christmas romance. I do enjoy these some days.

  • Dealt - Fascinating documentary about a card mechanic.

TV Shows watched

  • Letterkenny S7 - A bit of an uneven season, but there were definitely some great jokes in there! And we finally got to see them play hockey!

  • His Dark Materials S1 - I’m so excited about this one… So far, so good.

  • Superstore S5 - It’s our light and fluffy show.

  • The Good Place S4 - Oh goodness! This season is really coming together.

  • A Chef’s Life S1 - I went back to rewatch this series from the beginning. I think I stopped somewhere in S3.

  • The Mandalorian S1 - Getting so excited about this series.

  • American Gods S1 - Finally got this show started after J finished the book awhile back.

  • Daybreak S1 - Wow! Really enjoying this series so much!

Comments - Such a killer reading month! I read a ton, some good, some not so good. But at least I knocked off some titles from my TBR pile. And I even clarified my reading goals for next year. Now on to December and my last chance to read for this year.

  • Paper Towns - Finally watched this John Green adaptation. I think this was my favorite of his books.

  • Downtown Abbey - AHHH!!!!! I got to see the new movie at a special early screening. So much fun!

TV Shows watched

  • Game of Thrones S6-8 - We finished the last three seasons of the show! Not happy about the ending, but overall I’ve really enjoyed this series.

  • Big Little Lies S2 - Finally started the second season. Not really wanting to binge it, but it’s good so far.

  • Chilling Adventures of Sabrina S1 - Finally started this series and I don’t understand why I waited so long. The first few episodes have been so much fun!

  • Superstore S5 - One of the few sitcoms we watch.

  • The Good Place S4 - It’s back finally! And for the last season. I’m so excited to see where this goes.

Movies watched

  • The Grinch - I took the kids to a Wednesday morning showing. Cute expansion of the book.

  • Levitated Mass - Interesting documentary about an art installation.

  • The King of Kong - J has been wanting me to watch this documentary for awhile now. I was no expecting all those twists and turns.

  • John Wick 3 - Finally got to see this one. So good! But the real stars of the movie were those dogs!

  • Shadow - The set design of this movie is just amazing. And the last 40 minutes are bananas!

  • The Nutcracker and the Four Realms - Meh… I loved the ballet interlude, but the rest of the movie seemed a bit disjointed.

TV Shows watched

  • The Boys S1 - We were concerned, but this adaptation was amazing. Can’t wait to see what they do for S2.

  • Stranger Things S3 - Loved that they amped up the horror this season.

  • Game of Thrones S2-4 - We’ve finally made it past the Red and Purple Weddings. I think we are now caught up to where we stopped watching.

  • Legion S3 - Slowly working our way through this season.

  • Wu Assassins S1 - Hmmm.. mixed feelings about this series. The action scenes are incredibly. The exposition and pacing was very off.

  • Lucifer S4 - I finally caught up and now have to wait until S5 airs.

  • The 100 S6 - Another cliffhanger ending of course.

Comments - Wow! I thought August would be a huge slowdown for my reading, but that did not happen. Instead, I had a huge reading month knocking off a ton of titles from my TBR.

Movies watched

  • The Perfect Date - Pretty cute YA Rom Com

  • Shazam! - DC actually got this one right! Very entertaining.

  • Lego Movie 2 - Not quite as cute as the first one, but decent kid’s movie.

  • Mary Poppins Returns - Hmmm… I liked it, but it’s a big disconnect from the first one.

  • Wine Country - Loved loved loved this one. I think I might be Amy Poehler’s character…

  • Always Be My Maybe - A breath of fresh air romantic comedy. Really good one!

TV Shows watched

  • The 100 S6 - I’m finally caught up and watching in real time. Man, this season really took a turn!

  • Lucifer S1, S2, S3 - I started binging this show right before traveling to Indiana. In three weeks, I’ve finished three seasons! My current obsession!

Comments - A slight dip in reading momentum (as I knew would happen with traveling and prepping the twins for school). But I did have a stellar month of reading. Unfortunately there was a few duds in my reads this month. Very mixed bag…

Movies watched

  • MCU - We are officially caught up with all the MCU movies out. I need to go watch Captain Marvel, but otherwise we are ready to see Endgame.

TV Shows watched

  • The Tick S2 — I figured out the Duke twist towards the end, but still loved this series so much!

  • Letterkenny — We are completely caught up with the series. Goodness! This better come back sometime this year. At any rate, this is going to be a series that we will probably rewatch many many times. Hilarious!

  • Superstore — Keeping up with the current season.

  • The Magicians S4 — Holy crap! This season was bonkers, but I loved every minute of it!

  • Veep S7 — Still funny.

  • Umbrella Academy S1 — We finally started this series and I’m really loving all the changes they made from the comic. Especially love Klaus!

Comments - Such a great reading month! I thought things would slow down, but amazingly I kept it up. Plus I met my Unread Shelf goal of four books. I’m super ambitious for May, but I may just accomplish my reading goals.

  • Isn’t It Romantic — Pretty good, although I wish they would have leaned in a bit more.

  • The Beatles: Eight Days a Night — Interesting documentary. Love all the concert footage I’ve never seen.

  • Aquaman — Much better than I thought it would be…

  • Quartermass and the Pit — More horror and science fiction this time. Loved it!

  • Iron Man - We started rewatching all of the Marvel movies.

  • Iron Man 2 - I haven’t watched this one in years. Not as bad as I thought, but not amazing…

  • Thor - Oh goodness! This movie needed way more Loki…

  • Captain America - Good, but I think Winter Soldier is far superior.

TV Shows watched - Just the usual. Nothing too exciting.

Comments - Another amazing reading month! I really think I should up my GoodReads goal to 215 (up from the current 175). I knocked off a few from my TBR pile and a ton of library books. Hoping to read more from my own shelves in the next two months, but I need to reinstitute my library ban…

Comments - Another great reading month! I didn’t follow my library ban and read a ton from my shelves, but I did read a ton. And many of those books were ones that had been on my TBR list for awhile now. SO I’m calling it a good job! Having a ton of snow days helped. I’m super excited about March’s TBR pile. • Letterkenny S2 — This show makes me laugh so hard!

  • The Good Place S3 — This show continues to surprise us. Love it!

  • The Magicians S4 — Finally it’s back! And oh my, that was such a season opener.

Comments - I rocked my reading in January! Look at all those books I finished! Four of them were off my UnRead Shelf, so progress on my 50 book goal. Unfortunately I went a little library crazy which impaired my total. Looking for more reads from my shelves this February.

Movies watched

  • Sorry to Bother You — Wow! This was amazing and weird. Loved it.

  • They’ll Love Me When I’m Dead — Interesting documentary about Orson Welles.

  • Game Night — There were a few really funny lines, but the overall plot was lacking.

  • Ralph Breaks the Internet — I took the little boys to see a movie! We rarely (like never) go to the theater to see a movie. It was fun and the boys loved it. Even Q had minimal talking throughout.

TV Shows watched

  • Doctor Who S11 — Disappointed that this was such a short season, but I did really enjoy it. “It Takes You Away” was surprisingly touching.

  • Riverdale S1-2 — I finished the first season and started the second.

  • The Patriot Act with Hasan Minhaj — J and I started this series that’s the in-depth portion of Last Week Tonight but done with more flair. Loving it.

  • The Musketeers S3 — Finally finished this series.

Comments - Holy cow! I ended the year on a high note in terms of reading. I didn’t quite finish all my reading challenges, but I got so darn close. And I had a lifetime record high books and pages read. Go me! I can’t wait to see what great reads I pick up for 2019.

Movies watched

  • Mission Impossible: Fallout — A good action film to entertain me for the night.

  • The Meg — Very fun action film, just don’t think too hard about it.

  • Upgrade — We liked it while watching, but many aspects of this movie make no sense.

  • The Three Musketeers (1948) — Not a new to me movie, but one I haven’t watched in years. Very entertaining.

  • Better Starting Running — A very quirky little movie. Pretty entertaining.

TV Shows watched

  • Jack Whitehall: Travels with My Father S2 — Another fun romp with Jack and his father.

  • Stan Against Evil S3 — This show is just so much fun!

  • Full Frontal — Trying to catch up but we’re like 6 weeks behind.

Comments - November did not quite go how I was expecting reading-wise. I got waylaid from my original list by a ton of library reads. But that’s cool. I still read a ton. Hoping to end the year on a high note with the Christmas Spirit Reading Challenge and attempting to complete a few of my other Reading Challenges.

Movies watched

  • Incredibles 2 — Arthur and I went to see this at the theater while in Indiana. He was scared by the villain. I loved it!

  • Ant Man and the Wasp — Paul Rudd is a treasure! The rest of the movie was pretty good. That mid-credit scene just about killed me.

  • Peter Rabbit — Parts of this movie were really concerning…

  • Tag — Funnier than the trailers and reviews made it seem.

TV Shows watched — I didn’t really want anything the first half of the month as I was visiting family and then moving with no tv. We played catch-up for the second half of the month focusing on shows currently airing.

  • Food Truck Road Race S6 — Random watch while still at my mom’s house. I didn’t realize there were at least seven seasons out. I’ve only seen the first three.

  • Last Week Tonight — Playing catchup

  • The Good Place S3 — Playing catchup. Chidi’s breakdown was simply amazing!

  • Doctor Who S11 — Only two episodes in, but I’m loving Jodie Whittaker’s Doctor.

  • It’s Always Sunny S13 — Starting out strong with a fun episode featuring Mindy Kaling. I loved the “Time’s Up” episode.

  • Superstore S4 — The side characters are the best parts of this show.

  • Big Mouth S2 — This show surprises me with the serious topics and the big laughs.

Comments - We officially moved to Nebraska during the second week of the month. Everything has been thrown off due to the move, but I amazingly enough read a ton throughout. Looking to end the year strong.

October's TBR Pile: It’s going to be a weird month. We’re in Indiana right now and hope to be in our new Nebraska house within the next week. As such, my TBR pile is a bit nebulous right now. I did grab some books from the library here in Indiana to tide me over.

Movies watched

  • Jurassic World: Fallen Kingdom -- Super silly. A beat-for-beat remake of the first movie but without the heart. Oh well. I still root for the dinosaurs and Blue is awesome!

  • Solo: A Star Wars Story — This was a lot better than I was expecting. I really only watched it for Donald Glover’s Lando. And he was glorious! The rest was pretty good.

TV Shows watched

Comments - I knocked out a decent amount of books before we packed up the house and travelled to Indiana. We’re still in a weird limbo area while visiting family in Indiana before we get into our new house in Nebraska. Hoping to get back into reading my own books soon.

Books I Gave Up On (0)

Books bought/received (1) -- I picked up The Eyre Affair for cheap instead of waiting for the library holds list.

September's TBR Pile:

  1. TBR Pile: An Object of Beauty by Steve Martin
  2. Reading Assignment: The Eyre Affair by Jasper Fforde
  3. Book of the Month Club (carry-over): The Dinner List by Rebecca Serle
  4. Book of the Month Club (carry-over): Spinning Silver by Naomi Novik

  11. Classics Pick: Their Eyes were Watching God by Zora Neale Hurston
  12. Young Adult Pick: Untold by Sarah Rees Brennan

Movies watched

  • The Avengers: Infinity War -- I was not ready for that emotional roller coaster.
  • Deadpool 2 -- So f*ing funny. Love it when they break the fourth wall.
  • Ready Player One -- Not as bad as I was thinking it would be, but a little too flashy.
  • The Trip -- A rewatch for us as we wanted to watch the other two movies.
  • The Trip to Italy -- Loved this crazy film featuring two crazy guys.
  • The Trip to Spain -- Loved the final movie. So good.
  • Absolutely, Anything -- Not quite sure why this has such a low rating on Rotten Tomatoes. It's not great, but it's also not a steaming pile of garbage as the rating implies.
  • Won't You Be My Neighbor? -- This has been on our list for awhile now. Very moving!

TV Shows watched

  • Bachelor in Paradise S5 -- So much more fun than the regular series.
  • Legion S2 -- We're slowing making our way through the season. Only a few more episodes to go.
  • Supernatural S5 -- Finishing the last season that I watched all the way through.

Comments - As expected, my reading slowed down this month but I still knocked out quite a few from my shelves.
