RC 2019: Literary Escapes

2019-LITERARY-ESCAPES-CHALLENGE.png

From Escape with Dollycas:

Challenge – Try to read 1 book set in each of the 50 states + the District of Columbia. (51 Points). If you complete the challenge you earn 50 Bonus Points. You also can earn Bonus Points for books set in Counties around the world. 1 Bonus Point for each country. (No repeats – only 1 point can be earned for each country.)

Your books can be fiction or non-fiction and can be in any format, print, digital, audio.

So how do you decide what state a book is categorized under?

1.  In a fiction read it would be the State or Country that the book spends the most time in.  (Ie. If your main character is from Wisconsin but the book is all about his/her time in college in California – the books should categorize under California….)

2.  Non fiction reads categorize  in whatever State or Country it is about (Ie…. a book about fly fishing in Colorado is a Colorado point, and a book about women in Afghanistan is an Afghanistan point.

3.  If the book goes from one state to another… go with the state that most of the time is spent.

The way you keep track is up to you. I like making the map to visualize where I have been and where I need to go but I also keep a list on Reading Challenges Page. Here is directions on how to create a map. – http://www.wikihow.com/Make-a-Google-Map. You do not have to just use Google Maps, you can use a map program you choose.

I’m going to attempt this for 2019. Let’s see how far I get!

RC 2019: Monthly Key Word

Monthly Key Word Challenge.png

From My Reader’s Block:

Your task is to read at least one book for each month whose title includes one or more of the key words for that month. For instance, for January you might read Why Didn't They Ask Evans? by Agatha Christie. A full chart of all key words for the year may be found at the end of this post.

GUIDELINES
*The challenge runs from January 1 to December 31st, 2019. You may sign-up at any time until November 1, 2019. But to complete the challenge you will need to read (or have already read) books with keywords from any months missed by the time of sign-up.

*The object is to read one book each month--ideally during that month. However, I know that life can get in the way and some folks may not see this challenge until a couple (or several) months have gone by. So, if you get behind or if you sign up later in 2019, you are welcome to post any catch-up reads while the most current month's linky is open. Just be sure to identify your post appropriately. For instance, if posting January's key word (at any time): Bev (Why Didn't They Ask Evans?) January.

*However, our time machine only works one way--to the past. Please do not read ahead and post books for future key words until that month's linky is up or later.

*Key words may be tweaked. If the key word is dance, you may use dancing or danced. You may also be more creative and use "tango" or "ballet" or "waltz."

*Link up below to participate. I will also post a new headquarters site by the beginning of January where this original post and the monthly review links will be housed.

*No blog? No problem! If you have a Goodreads/Library Thing shelf or other link to post, you should be able to link that as well. You may also just add a comment telling me you'll be participating. When the monthly review post goes up, you may then comment with your book and keyword.

RC 2019: Alphabet Soup

2019-alphabet-soup-author-edition-button-1024x724.png

From Escape with Dollycas:

Details

This challenge will run from January 1st, 2019 until December 31st, 2019.

You can join anytime. You do not have to post a review of the book. Books can come from any genre.

You do not need to link up each spoonful.

Make a page or a post or a GoodReads shelf where you will keep track of your spoonfuls. I keep track of mine on my Challenge Page.

Crossovers to other challenges are allowed and encouraged!

It’s an alphabet challenge!!! The challenge is to read one book that has an author whose first name or last name starts with every letter of the alphabet.

So there are two different ways you can set up your own A-Z Reading Challenge.

A – How I plan to do it: Make a list on your blog from A-Z. Throughout the year, as you go along, add the authors with the book you read to the list. Towards the end of the year, you can check and see which letters you are missing and find authors/books to fit.

OR

B – Make a list now of 26 books, picking one for each letter of the alphabet.

For example:

A – Amanda Flower – Toxic Toffee (An Amish Candy Shop Mystery)

B – Lucy Burdette – A Deadly Feast: A Key West Food Critic Mystery

C – Sheila Connolly – The Lost Traveller: A County Cork Mystery

D – Denise Swanson – Leave No Scone Unturned (Chef-to-Go Mysteries)

Books can be read in any order and all formats – print – e-book – audio – are acceptable for this challenge!

Ready to join??

Bloggers grab the image below and make a post about the challenge to encourage others to join!

Non-bloggers you can join too! Just keep track any way you wish. You can even set up a special shelf on Goodreads.com to help you keep track!  It is super easy, Just click the MY BOOKS tab at the top of the page. When that page opens just click – ADD A SHELF in the left-hand sidebar. Title it Alphabet Soup Author Edition Challenge and you are all set.

Follow Escape With Dollycas Into A Good Book as there may be special announcements made about the challenge.

I have set up a group on Facebook for this challenge where you can share your books read and converse with others taking part in the challenge. Alphabet Soup – Author Edition – Challenge –  You can share your accomplishments throughout the year there.

I am asking everyone to sign up using Google Forms. Sign Up Here. This way I have your emails in case I need to contact you about any changes to the challenge or about special events.

I’m up for another try at reading one author from every letter of the alphabet. I’m not going to list out authors just yet, but hope to find all once I start reading.

Seasonal Series Readathon - Spring Update #1

I came across the Seasonal Series readathon from another blog that I follow. I love this fun idea and think I will be adding this to my reading challenges.  It’s a three-month long readathon running from March 20th to June 20th. The trick is that most of the books are to be a part of a series. I definitely I have series just sitting in my house reading to read. Let's check-in and see how I've done so far. I've completed 7 of the 25 tasks (28% done). I'd say that this is a great showing so far. I'm got a few more books from a series lined up and ready to be read next month.

library 2018.jpg

From Angel's Guilt Pleasures:

Welcome to the second annual Library Love Challenge hosted by Angel’s Guilty Pleasures & Brooke Blogs.

I hope you will join use in celebrating and support libraries.

If you are like use then you like to purchase every book you want to read. And, well that can put a hurt on your wallet. One way to help lessen the hurt is to check out books (prints, ebooks, or audios) from the library. If you do this then it will help save you LOTS of money $$.

Getting a library card in most places is FREE. So, if you love to read and/or listen to books then grab your library card and join the challenge.

Details:

Runs: January 1, 2018 – December 31, 2018. You can join any time.

  • Put a sign up post on your blog or (dedicate a Goodreads shelf or LibraryThing) and link it below. Make sure it’s public.

  • The goal is to read at least twelve (12) books from the library, but you can read more. While twelve is the minimum, there is no maximum limit. See the different levels below and pick the one that works best for you.

  • Any format will work for this challenge (prints, ebooks, or audios); as long as you checked it out from the library, it counts.

  • Books can be any genre (fiction, nonfiction, romance, fantasy, mystery, thriller, horror, etc.).

  • Crossovers from other reading challenges are allowed, including re-reads. The goal is to support your local library and save money.

  • Write a review to enter the giveaway – 2 sentences or an essay, whatever works for you, but there is a minimum of 2 sentences. Not sure what to write? How about something like, “The plot was a delight, but the characters didn’t capture me.” “I enjoyed the story and really liked the characters.”

  • As an added bonus: We are offering up a GIVEAWAY with this Challenge. Winner will be picked at the end of the year!! The entries are the direct links to your book reviews and you will have until Jan. 3rd, 2019to enter your reviews in the linky and then the Rafflecopter. Go here to enter the giveaway: 2018 Library Love Challenge Review Link-ups.

Please include a link back to this sign-up post, so others can join the reading challenge too. You do not have to be a book blogger to participate; you can track your progress on Goodreads/LibraryThing (as long as you have a dedicated shelf someplace).

I always frequent the library and this year will be no different. I'm going to sign up for the Overdrive Junkie level of 36 books.
