I always like levels in my challenges, so here are mine: Dilettante--Read 1-5 non-fiction books Explorer--Read 6-10 Seeker--Read 11-15 Master--Read 16-20

This challenge will last from January 1 to December 31, 2016. You can sign up anytime throughout the year.

I am not limiting the challenge to bloggers. You can also link to a review you wrote on another site, such as GoodReads or LibraryThing.

2016 Read My Own Damn Books Reading Challenge

From Estella's Revenge:

So the plan for 2016? #ReadtheDamnBooksYouAlreadyOwn is a hashtag that started thanks to a Twitter discussion...as most things do. When I mentioned wanting to shop my own book stash in the coming year, Adam from Roof Beam Reader suggested his long-running TBR Pile Challenge, but as it turns out, he won't be hosting it this year. I've failed miserably at this challenge in the past, so I was already a bit weary.

Several trusted blogger friends on Twitter suggested some alternative challenges like James Reads Books' final TBR Triple Dog DareorMy Reader's Block's Mount TBR 2016 Challenge. But....I kinda don't want to deal with any rules but my own.

The result: #ReadMyOwnDamnBooks. I'll be using this hashtag to talk about this personal challenge throughout the year. The rules are pretty nonexistent....

  • Read my own books

  • Try to knock off 100 in 2016 by either reading them or ditching the ones that are DNF

  • I can't buyyyy myself any books until I've read a significant amount of my own. Like maybe I can treat myself for every 5-10 of my own books I read. I'll be fairly flexible with this and see where my guilt leads me.

  • If I'm itching for newness...use the library. Even if it's the shitty local one.

I look at my shelves and there are SO MANY GREAT BOOKS waiting! And the ones that aren't great...be-gone-ya. The pic above is not all of my TBR, but it is the biggest chunk, nicely culled and organized.

I'm a big believer in keeping a manageable amount of things in the house, and when you live in a small house, the culling, cleaning out, and only keeping what you really need is IMPORTANT. Clutter messes with my head...a lot...so this is also an attempt to keep what I really love instead of collecting, collecting, collecting.

Wish me luck with #ReadMyOwnDamnBooks! If you'd like to join me, feel free to link up below. This is TOTALLY a choose-your-own-adventure, so don't feel beholden to my rules. You do you and holler with the hashtag on Twitter!

I definitely need to read the books from my shelf. And so I'm aiming for 40 books from my existing shelves as over flowing as they are...

2016 Graphic Novel and Manga Reading Challenge

Picture

From Graphic Novels and Manga Challenge:

The 9th Year of this Challenge starts in 2016 and will be my 5th year as host and I am thrilled to be here!!!!!  WOOOOHOOOO!!!

The button this year is designed by "moi". I had someone cancel on me at the last minute so decided to finally give it a shot myself for the first time.  The scary (perhaps interesting?) looking dude in the picture is my oldest son. I got that image from a photoshoot he participated in this year. No, he's not a professional model; he's a software engineer but can be found dressed like a comic book character in his spare time. Just kidding son, if you read this (LOL)

Anyway ....

It's time to start signing up for the 2016 challenge.  No changes this year, but if anyone has any ideas for the big 10-year celebration next year get in touch with me.

  • Please write a sign-up post on your blog and then sign-up below with a link to your specific sign-up post (NOT to your home page).

  • What counts:  graphic novels, collected trade editions, manga, comic strip collections, comic books or combinations of text and bubbles all in the same book. In print or digital. Anything else you feel is suitable.  My personal criteria is if it has either frames OR speech bubbles it counts.  I'm not going to be the comic police but if you are unsure, ask me in the comments any given month.

  • You must write a review and link to it for it to count towards the challenge. Reviews may be posted on your blog or goodreads or similar places. Several reviews may be gathered and posted in one link on your blog, but each book must be linked back here in the monthly linkies to count. Come back every month to record your progress.

Here is how the Challenge plays out:

runs from Jan.1 - Dec. 31, 2016

Levels

Modern Age: read and review 12 books during the year (that's only 1 book a month)

Bronze Age: read and review 24 books during the year (Can you handle 2 books a month.)

Silver Age: read and review 52 books during the year (Are you up to a book a week!)

You must sign up for a level, but once you complete that level you may move up and try for the next one.

After taking a year off from this challenge, I'm excited to jump back in. I'm going for the Bronze Age level.

2016 Finishing the Series Reading Challenge

2016, Finishing the Series, Reading Challenge, Bea's Book Nook

From Bea's Book Nook:

The details:

  • All books that are part of a continuing series qualify (i.e. Patricia Briggs' Mercy Thompson, Janet Evanovich's Stephanie Plum, James Patterson's Alex Cross, etc.)

  • It doesn't matter if you have 1 book or 10 books in a series to complete it, it qualifies (i.e. if you only need to read one more Mercy Thompson book to complete the goal, that's fine) The goal is to complete a series from wherever you are up to until the last published book.

  • The qualification period is January 1, 2016 to December 31, 2016. Books must be read during this time frame to count. Sign up is now until December 1, 2016.

  • Take the button above and post about it on your blog. Use the link below to sign up and make sure you link it directly to your post about this challenge, not to the home page of your blog.If you don't have a blog, that's fine. Just leave a comment to sign up and tell us which series you are reading. Or you can join the Goodreads group for this challenge by clicking here.

  • Each month there will be a post where you can link up your reviews. Write a review - 2 sentences or an essay, whatever works for you, but there is a minimum of 2 sentences. Not sure what to write? How about something like, "The characters were a delight but the story was slow and confusing. It was disappointing."

  • Any format and length of book counts - print, audio, ebook, etc.

  • You should choose the series you want to finish before the challenge begins, but it isn't necessary. It's fine to change series during the year - as long as you complete whichever series it is.

2016 I Love Libraries Reading Challenge

From Bea's Book Nook:

I Love Libraries was formerly hosted by Book Dragon's Lair. She's cutting back her challenge hosting for 2016 and passed the baton to me. This challenge is one of several library challenges I've done since started my blog so I'm delighted to be hosting.

It's no secret that I love my library and it's been a tremendous resource for me over the years, and not just for books. For this challenge, use your library to check out reading material - books, magazines, any sort of reading material that you are allowed to check out, physical or digital. The challenge runs January 1, 2016 to December 31, 2016.

The details:

Put a sign up post on your blog and link it below. If you don't have a blog, make a dedicated goodreads shelf (or LibraryThing), make sure it's public, and link it below. Any reading material that can be checked out of your library counts - print books, audio books, digital books, magazines, etc. As part of your sign up post, briefly write why you like using your library - free books, internet access, a quiet place to work, whatever draws you to the library. If you don't have a blog platform, post it in the comments below. Write a review - 2 sentences or an essay, whatever works for you, but there is a minimum of 2 sentences. Not sure what to write? How about something like, "The characters were a delight but the story was slow and confusing. It was disappointing." There will be a post each month where you can link your reviews. Each linky will run for the calendar year. Pick a level from the list below. You can move up as needed but you can't move down. Books may overlap with other reading challenges. ETA Dec. 17: There's a goodreads group for anyone interested in discussing libraries or books or for tracking your challenge. The group was an outgrowth of yet another library reading challenge that has since ended but the group is still active. The challenge host, The Geeky Blogger, added me as a mod to the goodreads group, come check us out! Levels: board book - 3 picture book - 6 early reader - 9 chapter book - 12 middle grades - 18 Young adult - 24 adult - 36 just insert IV - 50

I'm going for the Young Adult level of 24 books this year.

2016 Book to Movie Reading Challenge

books to movies
books to movies

From Ebook Classics:

Yes, it’s back! The Book to Movie Challenge is being rebooted in 2016 with more discussions, more monthly themes and more fun because let’s face it — the format last year probably bored all of you to tears! In addition, I’ll be giving away a few prizes throughout the year because bling is great motivation to participate.

GUIDELINES

♦  You can join at any time.

♦  Neither the book nor the movie has to be new in 2016.

♦  TV shows and mini-series count.

♦  Comic book and graphic novel adaptations count.

♦  Active participation in the challenge is required to qualify for prizes.

♦  Participation includes (but is not mandatory):

◊  Linking to a book to movie review on your blog

◊  Commenting on Book to Movie posts and participating in discussions

◊  Reading and commenting on the reviews of your fellow challenge participants

◊  Giving some of the mini-challenges a go

◊  Talking about the challenge on social media

♦  Prize winners will be randomly selected.

To sign-up for the challenge, post an introduction on your blog that names three (3) book adaptations in 2016 you’re excited about and tell us:

♦  Have you read the book and did you love/loathe it?

♦  Why are you excited about the adaptation?

♦  What do you think of the casting?

I'm going for 10 book to movie adaptations for this year. I'm leaving most of my list open for discoveries, but I do know that I want to read/watch:

  • Chocolat -- Watched the movie and loved it, but have never read the book. It's on for my TBR for January.
  • The Maze Runner -- Haven't read the book or watched the movie. Looking forward to it.
  • The Mists of Avalon -- I saw the mini-series years ago and have wanted to read the book for years now.

2016 What's in a Name Reading Challenge

What's In A Name 2016 logo

From The Worm Hole:

The basics

The challenge runs from January to December. During this time you choose a book to read from each of the following categories (examples of books you could choose are in brackets – I’ve included some from other languages, and translations most definitely count!):

  • A country

  • An item of clothing

  • An item of furniture

  • A profession

  • A month of the year

  • A title with the word ‘tree’ in it

Extra information

  • Books can be any format (print, audio, ebook).
  • It’s preferred that the books don’t overlap with other challenges, but not a requirement at all.
  • Books cannot overlap categories (for instance my example of Black Swan Rising for ‘an animal’ could be used for the ‘colour’ category or ‘animal’ category, but not both).
  • Creativity for matching the categories is not only allowed, it’s encouraged!
  • You don’t have to make your list of books beforehand, you can choose them as you go.
  • You don’t have to read your chosen books in any particular order.

Everything else

On January 1 I’ll publish 7 posts, one for each category and one for your wrap-up post. These posts will be published as WordPress pages and linked to from one main, ‘gateway’, post on the blog. You will be able to post your links to your reviews or leave comments, depending on whether you’re a blogging reader or a non-blogger reader. If you are a blogger, please leave one review per category. You’ll be able to find the gateway post through a link I’ll be adding to the navigation section of my sidebar. Alternatively, for ease, you might want to subscribe to this blog via Feedly or email so that the gateway post will be immediately available to you without you having to search the site. The non-Feedly feed link and also a Bloglovin’ link are on the sidebar.

Excited to once again participate in this challenge. I love finding titles that fit with the categories.

**Failures (Needs Improvement): My perpetual challenges are not going so well. I really need to focus on some of those books that I've been meaning to read for years. Working on it... I'm going to retool my reading plan for the coming months.

2015 TBR Reduction Extreme Reading Challenge

TBRreduction2015

For this year's reading challenges, I decided to do something very different and drastic.  I am going to read women authors.  I feel like I've been neglecting all those wonderful female authors sitting on my shelves.  I will be tailoring my challenge participation to account for this overall goal.  I do have a few exceptions.  I may read a male author if 1) I've already started the series and desperately want to finish it (i.e. Song of Ice and Fire) 2) It is a book club selection (out of my hands) or 3) If it is a male author writing nonfiction specifically about a women subject (e.g. a biography of Kate Chopin).  Other than those three exceptions, I want to discover some wonderful women authors.

From All About Books:

The goal of the challenge:

The goal of this challenge is to reduce your TBR (= books you own but have not read yet) by as many books as possible. To achieve this you set yourself a monthly goal = by how many books your want to reduce your TBR each month. We are going to give you a mini-challenge each month that is going to help you to achieve that goal. Or you can participate in a TBR battle.

Your TBR reduction is calculated by the books you read minus the books you got (everything counts, no matter how you got it, even presents).

IMPORTANT: Once you chose a goal, you can’t change it!

Collect points:

During the challenge you will be able to collect points which you can use to enter our giveaway at the end of the challenge. You can collect up to 3 points each month:

  • You get 2 points if you reached your TBR reduction goal
  • You can get another point with one of the following two ways
    • Pass the mini-challenge of the month
    • Win that month in the TBR battle

When you register for the challenge you have to choose one way to gain the extra point, but you will always be able to switch between the two after a month. You will only get the extra point though IF you reached your TBR reduction goal.

The TBR battle:

In the TBR battle you are going to compete against another participant. You are going to choose who you want to battle with. If you want to participate in the battle but haven’t found a partner yet, we’ll try to help you find someone! (You should choose someone who reads about as many books as you and has roughly the same goal)

The person who reduced their TBR by more books during a month wins the battle and gets the extra point.

We’ll provide you with a google doc that you can use to keep track of the books read and got and to see who is winning.

If you or your partner looses interest in the battle and you want to participate in the mini-challenges instead, you can switch at the beginning of a new month.

The procedure:

The challenge takes place from January 1st 2015 until December 31st. You can register until January 1st.

Partners and google docs for the TBR battle will be send out until January 4th.

A new mini-challenge and a link to submit your monthly values will be available in THIS document every 1st day of a month.

This sounds like a great way to motivate me to read from my own shelves instead of buying or even going to the library.  I've decided to challenge myself to 4 books from my TBR shelves a month.  That's only 48 books over the course of a year!  I think I can do that.  And I decided to participate in the mini challenges instead of the battle.

2015 New Author and OLW 2015 Reading Challenges

NAC.2015

From Literary Escapism:

Welcome back to the New Authors reading challenge! I’m hoping everyone is still enjoying this reading challenge as we head into our seventh year.

For those new to the New Author Challenge, the whole idea started when I first started reviewing and I didn’t know that many authors in my favored genre. So I went looking. I gave myself a goal of finding 50 new authors and ended up reading 56 that first year. I loved finding these new characters, worlds and cultures, so I want to help others find new ones as well. Since 2006, I’ve tried over 150 different authors I may not have tried otherwise and I have found some really great authors.

The idea behind this is to find new authors that you’ve never tried before, not necessarily ones that are debuting. They can be in your genre of choice or be brave and try something new. You never know what you’re going to like until you try it. If you’re looking for some suggestions, you can check out the Author page here at Literary Escapism or the 2009, 2010, 2011, 2012, 2013, and2014 Challenge pages. With over 1000 reviews posted, I’m sure there will be something there for everyone.

Here are the guidelines:

  1. The challenge will run from January 1, 2015 through December 31, 2015.
  2. Since this is an author challenge, there is no restriction on choosing your novels. They can definitely be from other challenges. However, the authors must be new to you and, preferably from novels. Anthologies are a great way to try someone new, but only a third of your new authors can be from short stories/novellas or anthologies.
  3. I want this to be an easy challenge, so you can pick to do either 15, 25 or 50 new authors. It all depends on how fast you read and how adventurous you want to be.  If you reach your goal halfway through the year, don’t stop. Any new author you try can be added to Mr. Linky. We all want to know about your new experience.
  4. After reading your new author, write your review and then come back here and add your link to Mr. Linky. Make sure you include your name and the author, but adding the title is completely up to you.
  5. Bloggers or Non-Bloggers alike are welcome. You don’t have to have a site to participate. You can link up via Facebook, GoodReads or even Amazon if you’d like.

Once you reach your goal, you don’t have to stop. Any new author you try, go ahead and head back here and add it to the list. Introduce us all to whoever you find. Afterall, there’s no reason to stop trying new authors, right?

I'm joining again this year.  I've decided to go for 15 new fiction authors this year.

OLW 2015: Home

I've joined Ali Edwards for One Little Word 2015.  As part of the class, someone on the message board mentioned the idea of reading books associated with their word.  What a great idea! I decided that I wanted to add this reading challenge onto my others.  My word is HOME, so I've been scouring Amazon for book ideas associated with HOME.  I have a few ideas, but I'm sure I'll find more and more as the year goes on.  I'm aiming for 10 HOME related books this year.

2015 Banned Books and Classics Reading Challenge

From Buckling Bookshelves:

This is a very low pressure challenge -- the whole idea is to have fun and read some books that censors have tried to keep off the shelves. I feel there is tremendous value in reading even one banned book, so I'm starting the levels low to encourage more people to give it a try -- but if you're feeling daring, try for one of the higher levels!

DATES: January 1, 2015 through December 31, 2015

RULES: Any book that has been banned or challenged counts. Books can be any format, any length, and can overlap with other challenges. Graphic novels, children's books, picture books are all fine -- any book that has been banned or challenged works for this challenge.

WHERE CAN I FIND BOOK SUGGESTIONS? There isn't one specific list to work from, but there are many different resources you can check out for ideas:

  • The ALA's lists of frequently challenged books. There are multiple lists split up by author, year, decade, and a separate list for classics, so there are a lot of options from all different genres.
  • GoodReads has several listopia lists on the subject -- this is particularly helpful for identifying books you already have on your shelves if you are a user of the site.
  • The Banned Books Week Facebook Page is great about reporting current information on bans and challenges.
  • I wrote posts last year about three Banned Book Victories as well as Additional Banned Books Resources including some information on challenged graphic novels.
  • If you learn about a book getting challenged in the news, on a book blog, around the web, or wherever else you get your bookish news, it's fair game. One book that made headlines last year was The Miseducation of Cameron Post -- it doesn't need to make any of the big lists to count. And if you learn about a new incident, I'd love to hear about it!

HOW TO PARTICIPATE: Write a post identifying which level you are aiming to complete, linking to this sign-up post. If you don't have a blog, just leave a comment below stating what level you are trying for. Listing the books you'd like to read for the year is optional. If you do make a list, you are welcome to change it at any time.

For each book you read for the challenge, you can link-up your reviews here, so we can read them! Reviews can be as short or long as you like, even a one-liner is fine. If you don't have a blog, but post reviews on GoodReads or other similar site, you can link directly to your reviews there. If you don't post reviews, you can leave a comment on the Review Link-Up page telling us which books you completed.A year-end wrap-up post is optional and you may link yours up in the review linky if you choose to write one.
LEVELS: Below are the levels you can choose from. Changing your mind is OK -- you can go up or down in level at any time. I said low-pressure, remember? I'm not the book police, I promise.Making Waves: 1-2 Challenged Books Trouble-Maker: 3-5 Challenged Books Rabble-Rouser: 6-9 Challenged Books Rebel: 10-14 Challenged Books Leader of a Revolution: 15+ Challenged Books

I'm always up for reading banned books. I think I'll shoot for the Trouble-Maker level of 5 books.

From Books and Chocolate:

It's back!!  Once again, I'm hosting the Back to the Classics Challenge.  I'm hoping to encourage bloggers to read more classics.  By reading and posting about a minimum of six classic books, one lucky winner will receive a $30 gift from Amazon.com or The Book Depository!

This year I've made two changes to the format.  First of all, there are no required categories.  That's right!!  If there is a category you don't like (or more than one), you can just skip it, and still qualify for the drawing! Secondly, I've increased the categories from eleven to twelve.  I had so much fun choosing categories, I couldn't decide, and so this year I've decided to make it an even dozen.  This results in a slight change to the way I'll calculate entries into the drawing.  Here's how it's going to work:

  • Complete six categories and you get one entry.
  • Complete nine categories, and you get two entries.
  • Complete all twelve categories, and your name is entered into the drawing three times!

So without further ado, here are the categories for the Back to the Classics Challenge 2015:

1.  A 19th Century Classic -- any book published between 1800 and 1899.
2.  A 20th Century Classic -- any book published between 1900 and 1965.  Just like last year, all books must have been published at least 50 years ago to qualify as a classic.  The only exception is books that were published posthumously but written at least 50 years ago.)3.  A Classic by a Woman Author.

4.  A Classic in Translation. As in last year's category, this can be any classic book originally written or a published in a language that is not your first language.  Feel free to read it in its original form if you are comfortable reading in another language.
5.  A Very Long Classic Novel -- a single work of 500 pages or longer.  This does not include omnibus editions combined into one book, or short story collections.
6.  A Classic Novella -- any work shorter than 250 pages.  For a list of suggestions, check out this list of World's Greatest Novellas from Goodreads.
7.  A Classic with a Person's Name in the Title.  First name, last name, or both, it doesn't matter, but it must have the name of a character.  David Copperfield, The Brothers Karamazov, Don Quixote -- something like that. It's amazing how many books are named after people!
8.  A Humorous or Satirical Classic.  Humor is very subjective, so this one is open to interpretation.  Just tell us in the review why you think it's funny or satirical.   For example, if you think that Crime and Punishment and funny, go ahead and use it, but please justify your choice in your post.
9.  A Forgotten Classic.  This could be a lesser-known work by a famous author, or a classic that nobody reads any more.  If you look on Goodreads, this book will most likely have less than 1000 reviews.  This is your chance to read one of those obscure books from the Modern Library 100 Best Novels or 1001 Books to Read Before You Die.  Books published by Virago Modern Classics,Persephone, and NYRB Classics often fall into this category.
10.  A Nonfiction Classic.  A memoir, biography, essays, travel, this can be any nonfiction work that's considered a classic, or a nonfiction work by a classic author.  You'd be surprised how many classic authors dabbled in nonfiction writing -- I have nonfiction books by Dickens, Trollope, Twain, and Steinbeck on my shelves.
11.  A Classic Children's Book.  A book for your inner child!  Pick a children's classic that you never got around to reading.
12.  A Classic Play.  Your choice, any classic play, as long as it was published or performed before 1965.And now for the rest of the rules:

  • All books must be read in 2015.  Books started prior to January 1, 2015, are not eligible.  Reviews must be linked by December 31, 2015.
  • All books must have been published at least 50 years ago; therefore, 1965 is the cutoff date.  The only exception is books published posthumously, but written before 1965.
  • E-books and audiobooks are eligible!  Books may also count for other challenges you may be working on.
  • Books may NOT cross over categories within this challenge.  You may NOT count the same book twice for different categories in this challenge.  One book per category -- otherwise, they won't count.
  • If you do not have a blog, you may link your review from Goodreads or other publicy accessible online format.
  • Please sign up for the challenge using the linky below BEFORE MARCH 31, 2015.  If possible, please link to your sign-up announcement post, if possible or applicable.
  • You do NOT have to list your books prior to starting the challenge, but it's more fun if you do!  You can always change your list at any time.  Books may be read in any order.
  • Please identify the categories you've read in your wrap-up post so that I can easily add up your entries for the prize drawing!  Adding links within the post would be greatly appreciated.
  • The prize will be awarded the first week of January, 2016.  All qualifying participants will receive one or more entries, based on the categories completed, and will receive a $30 (US) gift card from Amazon.com or The Book Depository, as long as they live in a country that can receive shipment.  See here for list of countries.

I'm aiming for 6 categories after a poor showing last year. I know that I want to read Ethan Frome by Edith Wharton, but other than that, the rest is TBD.

I'm making my own RC this year (informal).  My goal is to read at least one book from each of the 100s of the Dewey Decimal system.  I usually stick to the 300s and 900s, but would love to branch out again and hit them all.
