Fall into Reading 2013

fall-into-reading (1920).jpg

Better late than never!  I completely forgot about this challenge and am excited to find it again.  Here are the details from The Musings of a Book Addict:

The Basics:
This is a low key reading challenge anyone can join.  It runs fromSeptember 22nd - December 21st.
Here is what you need to do to participate:
Create a list of books you would like to read this fall. This is the only requirement for participating in the challenge.  You may also wish to set some other goals (reading to your kids a certain number of hours per day or week. Maybe you have a separate stack of books listed to read to your kids or grandkids. This is not required and is completely optional.
·         Write a blog post that includes the list of books you want to read, plus any goals you may have set, and get ready to post it on your blog on September 22nd.
·         Visit The Musings of a Book Addict on September 22nd to sign up for the challenge. I’ll have an official launch post up that morning, complete with an area for you to submit a link to your personal Fall Into Reading  post, where it will be added to the master list of participants.
If you don’t have a blog but wish to participate in Fall Into Reading 2013, you can. On September 22nd, leave a comment on the official Fall Into Reading launch post with the list of books you’d like to read/or finish this fall.  I’ll add you.  Please join us for this fun time of reading.
·         In December write another blog post to let everyone know how you did. (I’ll post an official wrap-up to the challenge on December 22nd, where you’ll be able to share your results.)
·         Finally, have fun.  Check in with the other participants to see what they are reading and get book ideas to add to your ever growing book list.  Write reviews if you want, but it is not required.

Last year I had a goal of 50 books and just made it, right at the deadline.  This year I won't have as much time to read because of the baby.  But I still want to participate.  The idea is to finish some of the reading challenges I have left over for 2013.  Overall, I am shooting for 35 books.  Here's the breakdown:

  • Blogger Recommendation  7/10  70%
  • 52 Books in 52 Weeks   36/52  69.2%
  • Book Bingo   49/73  67.1%

*Successes: I've knocked out five reading challenges so far: Library, New Authors, What's in a Name, Genre, and Women Authors.  But to be fair, they were the easy ones.  I'm hoping to knock out many more in the next month or so.  And I'm on track to hit my 75% of spots goal.

**Failures (Needs Improvement): Some of my very specific genre challenges are suffering right now (Telling Tales, Witches, and especially Historical Fiction).  I feel like these will be my leftovers at the end of the year, but I'm going to keep trying.

A NonFiction Adventure Reading Challenge

When I found The Fantasy Project, I also realized that Michelle had created a nonfiction challenge.  How did I not know about these?  I lover her seasonal readathons and general book choices.  I need to jump on this challenge also... I'm setting a goal of 100 books in 5 years, so my end date is August 2018.  I think I can manage that, and I just might go over.  I really want to read the nonfiction in my own stacks and branch out to those must reads I keep seeing.  See my list below the challenge details:

Here are the guidelines:

  • choose 50+ non-fiction books; the number is up to you.  Choose 50, 75, 100, 200.  It's entirely your choice
  • Books must be non-fiction--biography, autobiography, history, memoir, cooking, travel, science, etc.
  • list them at your blog (or on Goodreads or another social media site, if you do not have a blog)
  • choose your completion goal date five years in the future and make note of it with your list of titles (like this:  reading goal--50 books  goal dates--March 20, 2012 - March 20, 2017)
  • come back here and post the link to your list in the linky below
  • write a review (or a short summary) on the book when finished and link it to the title in your list (or link to your review on Goodreads, again, if you don't have a blog)
  • there will be pages posted at the top of the blog for you to link your reviews
  • when you have completed the challenge, come add your link to the Completed Challenges page
  • there will be a blog roll in the sidebar where I will list you/your blog linked to your lists
  • grab the button in the right sidebar and link it back to this blog
  • check out this PAGE which contains links to various online sources with lists of reading ideas
  • I might host a read-a-long from time to time.  If you are hosting one, or an event or challenge surrounding a non-fiction title, post about it at this PAGE
  • this challenge can be crossed over with any other challenges
  • your link in the linky below mustlead to your list, not just your main blog address.  Any links that are blog links only will be deleted
Updates: *I was asked if the list has to be made in advance.  The idea is to work toward reading non-fiction that you've been wanting to read so the list is mandatory. However, the list does not have to be set in stone. You can change out titles as the mood suits you.

My List:

The first 24 are taken directly from my Goodreads TBR shelf.  And the first 53 are those that I currently own.  The rest are suggestions and those I've been wanting to read. Notice the huge trend of history and women's studies volumes.  Can you guess what my college majors were?

  1. Tales from the Boom Boom Room by Susan Antilla
  2. A History of God by Karen Armstrong
  3. The Battle for God by Karen Armstrong

The Fantasy Project: 101 Books in 10 Years

Fantasy-Project (1920).jpg

The list was compiled by Bella (formerly of A Bibliophile's Bookshelf), who currently blogs at A Prairie Girl Reads, and Jo (Ink & Paper) when they held a mammoth poll in 2009 inviting readers to nominate their favorite fantasy books. The list is compiled of all the books nominated and voted for (813 total) in order by number of votes. The challenge started out with a year long format and then I changed it to a perpetual challenge. In both instances, books could be read from the top 101 or the entire list of 813.

Below are the guidelines for this revamped challenge. I hope you will join me!

The guidelines for The Fantasy Project

  • Read 101 fantasy books from the list of 101, or the entire list of 813, in 10 years (access the lists at the top of the blog).
  • choose 101 fantasy books from the list (due to the large amount of urban/paranormal fantasy titles on the list, I have made thisexception--26 titles can be titles that are not on the list, i.e. newer releases that came out after the list was compiled, more books of a high fantasy nature, etc.) To break it down...75 titles from the list and 26 that are not on the list = 101 books total.
  • you can read other books in a series in which the first book, or other books in the series, appears on the list, to complete the challenge
  • post your list on your blog
  • choose your completion goal date ten years in the future and make note of it with your list of titles (like this:  reading goal--101 books  goal dates--August 20, 2013 - August 20, 2023)
  • come back here and post the link to your list in the linky below
  • write a review on the book when finished and link it to the title in your list
  • there are pages at the top of the blog that link to spreadsheets where you can list/link up your reviews
  • there is a members list page, where I will list your name, blog, goal date, and link to your list
  • there is a "introduce yourself" page for members
  • when you have completed the challenge, come add your link to the Completed Challenges page
  • If you happen to host a read-a-long, or an event or challenge surrounding one of the titles on your list, post about it at this PAGE
  • I will try to have periodic group check-ins too
  • grab the button from sidebar
A few more important details
  • this challenge can be crossed over with any other challenges
  • your link in the linky below must lead to your list, not just your main blog address. Any links that are blog links only will be deleted
  • the list must be made in advance. The idea is to work toward reading fantasy you may have been otherwise neglecting and/or the fantasy titles/authors you love. However, the list does not have to be set in stone. You can change out titles as the mood suits you.
  • every 2 - 3 months we will have what we'll call the Wheel of Fortune (borrowing from The Classics Club classics spin idea) where you make a list of 15 books from your list (i.e. 5 you're dreading, 5 you can't wait for, 5 favorites or rereads--yes, rereads are okay OR 5 urban fantasy, 5 high fantasy, 5 by the same author...the list is pretty much up to you). On a predetermined date, I will randomly draw (random.org) a number from 1 - 15 and the number that's chosen will be the book you read from your list of fifteen.
  • our Twitter hashtag is #101FantasyProject
  • Addendum:  If you finish the 101 books before the ten years is up, come back and make another list and reset your ten year time limit!
If you have any questions or comments, please leave me a comment below, or email me at truebookaddictATgmailDOTcom

I found this the other day.  How did I not know about this?  Anyway, I have wanted to read some many books on the list of 813 that I had to sign up.  In fact, I decided that I want to read mostly new to me books.  I wanted to concentrate on getting to those books that I've been putting off.  My goal is August 2023 for the 101 books listed, but I'm hoping I can read these in 5 years.  I think I'll be making smaller timeline goals as the years progress.

*Successes:  Many of my genre challenges are moving along quit nicely.  I've almost knocked out my sub-genres and genres.  Very exciting!

**Failures (Needs Improvement): I failed the T4MC Part 11; missed it by one book.  I'm trying again for this go around.  I also need to work on historical fiction, classics, and the T4MC Part 12.  Overall, I need to get moving on my overall reading totals to compensate for the anticipation of slower reading after October.  Newborns really tend to cut into free time.

Fantasy and New Movies February

ff

I have two month-long challenges to highlight today.  First up the book related one...

From The Book Cellar:

So I first had this idea last year in the summer, way past the only F month of the year, but it still had been rolling around in my head. And this year I really want to make it happen. So basically picture a month solid of fantasy: author interviews, book reviews, book features, giveaways, and anything else I can think of that is solely fantasy.  Fantasy February here I come :)

SO IT IS HAPPENING. February is going to be all fantasy all the time here on The Book Cellar and I am inviting you to join me!

So if you are a reader, come with your thoughts and what fantasy books you love.

If you are a blogger, post your own reviews and link back up so we can all explore the awesome fantasyness all month long.

Love, love, love this idea!  I am totally on board with this idea.  I have a ton of fantasy books just waiting to be read.  Would you like to join?  Hope on over to The Book Cellar to join in the fun.  Now, excuse me while I go and rearrange my TBR pile...

And now to the movie related one...

Back in September of 2011, I decided to watch one movie for each letter of the alphabet.  It was meant to be a month-long challenge, but it ended up bleeding into October.  This year, I don't want to do an A to Z movie challenge.  I decided to do just a New Movie a Day challenge.  I won't be going to the theater everyday.  We have a library, multiple Redboxes, the server, and Netflix all within reach to use.  I am going to watch a new-to-me movie everyday for the month of February.  Each movie will be highlighted with a short review.  Stay tuned...

2013 Book Bingo Reading Challenge

From Kristilyn at Reading in Winter:

Of course, a challenge isn’t really a challenge unless there are some rules and guidelines:

  1. Be awesome. If you’re not, this isn’t going to work.
  2. The challenge runs from January 1 to December 31, 2013.
  3. If you want to participate, you can join in any time of the year! Feel free to write up a blog post with the rules linking back to my and Anne’s blog in your sign-up post.
  4. If you read one book for the “1 book” in any category, you can’t change it later on when you read another book to “2 books.” Once a square is crossed off, it’s crossed off for good! (Feel free to print off the scoreboard to keep track!)
  5. Books read for one square are for that square ONLY and cannot be counted towards another category. This is all about reading ALL THE BOOKS.
  6. The FREE SQUARE isn’t really a free square. In order to cross it off, you must read a book by either:
    1. Reading a book picked by another participant, or
    2. Reading a book in a genre picked by another participant.
    3. You can start your board over again, but ONLY if you receive the stamp of awesome by completing a blackout. The “winners” of the challenge will be the ones who achieve the most winning combinations by the end of 2013.
    4. You can feel free to post your reading list for each category, though it’s not a requirement.
    5. Having a blog or writing reviews for books read is not required. So long as you want to have fun, you can participate!
    6. This isn’t a race, but don’t be afraid to rub your reads in the other player’s face. This will be seen as encouragement. Feel free to use the hashtag #2013BookBingo on Twitter!

While you can definitely “win” by the boring ol’ vertical or horizontal (or diagonal!) lines, the best ways to win are as follows:

Like it says in the guidelines, the ONLY way to start a new board is to become the SUPER READER! The goal is to read ALL THE BOOKS! To be a winner (thus, to become the awesomest reader around), you’ll want to accomplish as many wins as possible!

UPDATE: I had a question about when we will post updates for the challenge, so I decided that every 3 months I will post an update here and all participants can link to their own updates. Tentatively, an update post will go up April 1st, July 1st, October 1st, and December 31st.

Will you participate in this challenge? Do you have what it takes to become a super reader?

Holy crap!  This looks like so much fun!  I am jumping on this challenge and am hoping to be a super reader and fill the entire board!

2013 Dusty Bookshelf Reading Challenge

The Dusty Bookshelf 2013 Reading Challenge

From Books a True Story:

Hi everyone! I’m really excited for next year’s Dusty Bookshelf Challenge.  I started this challenge to read those books that have been sitting on my shelf for a long time or books that I don’t own, but that I’ve been meaning to read for years.  It’s up to you what books qualify for this challenge.

Because of the awesome people in the Dusty Bookshelf Goodreads group, I have even more fun things to add to the challenge this year.  There will be a theme for every month to help you pick books from your list.  Last year we had themes like Page to Screen, Animals, Young Adult, and Jane Austen.  Since these themes were so much fun in the Goodreads group, I’m going to share the theme on my blog monthly as well.  The Goodreads group also has a challenge widget to keep track of your progress!

I’m also going to do mini-challenges every month.  Here’s the schedule of the mini-challenges next year:

You can participate in as many or as few themes and mini-challenges as you’d like.  They aren’t required – they’re just for fun and motivation.

~Dust Bunny – Read 5-10 books

~Cobwebs – Read 10-15 books

~Grungy – Read 20+ books

EXTRA CREDIT-Say how long that book has been sitting on your shelf!

I think it's time to get the dust off of my bookshelf, so I'm definitely joining this one.  I added the Goodreads group to my profile and will be updating there and here on my blog.  In order not to get too bogged down, I am going to sign up for the Cobwebs level of 10-15 books. Tentative TBR list:

  • P.S. I Love You by Cecelia Ahern

2013 Seriously Series Reading Challenge

From On a Book Bender:

How serious about series are you? We'll find out in 2013.

In the summer of 2012, Amanda and I hosted an informal challenge that focused on completing books in series that we owned. It was enough of a success that we decided we wanted to turn it into a year-long challenge--with a few minor changes. To start with, we have expanded on our original challenge by including both ongoing series and adding new-to-us series, as well as an option for series rereads for those that are VERY serious about their series (or for those that just like to go back and reread old favorites).

Definitions

For this challenge, we define a series as a collection of two or more books that belong together and where the second book is published before the end of 2013. This is a pretty broad definition of series, and it includes traditional series like the Black Dagger Brotherhood series, less traditional series like Stephanie Perkins's YA contemps (Anna and the French Kiss, Lola and the Boy Next Door), and shorter series, like Kendare Blake's Anna series (Anna Dressed in Blood, Girl of Nightmares).

A series is considered complete in one of two ways: either as finishing all the books that you own in the series or as obtaining and reading all the books that have been published in the series to date. Because we don't want this challenge to become a financial burden, how you choose to define completion is left to your discretion.

How It Works

To allow for the greatest level of flexibility, we've separated series into three categories: series started before 2013, series started in 2013, and series rereads. Series started before 2013 are defined as series that you have started reading before Jan. 2013 and that you still have unread books to get current in (or finish) the series. Series started in 2013 are defined as any series that you start reading between Jan. and Dec. 2013, and the second book in the series must be published before December 2013. A series reread is defined as books that are part of a series that were read before Jan. 2013 and that are reread between Jan. 2013 and Dec. 2013. A series reread does NOT have to include the full series.

For each category, there are different levels of seriousness about series that you can choose. Semi-serious is reading 1 to 6 series, seriously serious is reading 7 to 12 series, super seriously serious is reading 13 to 18 series, and seriously spectacular series star is reading more than 18 series. What this ends up looking like is this:

series started before 2013series started in 2013series rereads
Semi-Serious1-6 series1-61-6
Seriously Serious7-127-127-12
Super Seriously Serious13-1813-1813-18
Seriously Spectacular Series Star18+18+18+

You choose which categories you want to attempt and which level to shoot for. Reading novellas and short storiesfrom a series does count here.

Goals and Progress

Want to sign up? Create a post or page about this challenge, what goals you would like to accomplish (mine is here, as an example), and then link up your post here at Reading the Paranormal. I will be hosting all of the linkies for this challenge. In addition to the sign up, every three months, we will post a check-in, where you can report your progress and reassess your original goals.

That schedule will look like the following:

  • April 1st: January--March
  • July 1st: April--June
  • October 1st: July--September
  • January 1st, 2014: October--December

I'm going for the semi-serious level of 1-6 series for series started in 2012  and seriously serious level of 7-12 for series started in 2013.  I try to keep my series in progress to a minimum at any given time.  Therefore, I don't have a ton of qualifying books, but there are few.  I imagine that I will be starting some more series during 2013.  Tentative TBR list:

Already started

  • Neil Gaiman's Sandman series
  • Rick Riordan's Heroes of Olympus series
  • Kendare Blake's Anna Dressed in Blood series

Starting

  • Weather Wardens
  • Locke and Key
  • Victoria Gardella
  • Matched
  • Chicago Fire
  • ???

2013 Library Reading Challenge

Hosted by Gina at Book Dragon's Lair

Our love of reading can be expensive! Not only are we purchasing books but we also need space to keep them. I've started using the library (again) but couldn't find a challenge to help me. Here it is. There are a number of levels, for those who don't have a library card yet to those that live there. Enjoy! Requirements:

  • choose a level - you may move up as needed, just not down.
  • check books out of the library
  • books may overlap with other challenges
  • any format allowed (print, ebook, audio)
  • reviews are not necessary but a list of books read is.
  • a blog is not necessary, just comment that you want to join in

Levels:

  • board book - 3
  • picture book - 6
  • early reader - 9
  • chapter book - 12
  • middle grades - 18
  • Young adult - 24
  • adult - 36
  • just insert IV - 50

I'm going to go for the Young Adult level of 24 books as I really want to read from my personal hoarde.  But I'm sure that I will be patronizing the library at some point in the year.
