Quote Wednesday - Holmes

Life is a romantic business. -- Oliver Wendell Holmes

Screw Valentine's Day, I always get romantic during the holidays.  Maybe it's just the music and the treats.  Or maybe it's just life...

Quote Wednesday - Twain

Shut the door -- not that it lets in the cold, but that it lets out the coziness. -- Mark Twain

To be honest, I'm kind of missing the cold and snow.  (I said kind of)  Wearing a light jacket with short sleeves, just isn't the same as snuggling up in a cozy sweater with a mug of hot tea.  I may be missing it a bit, but I am grateful for feeling comfortable consistently.  I'll be back in Indiana for Christmas where I'm sure I'll get my fill of cold.

Quote Wednesday - Gilbert

Did nothing in particular and did it very well. -- W.S. Gilbert

This sums up my Thanksgiving holiday.  I hung out with the family and boys.  We lounged.  We watched movies and tv.  We read.  We just enjoyed each other's company.  And it was glorious...

Quote Wednesday - Sands

It is extraordinary how music sends us back to the memories of the past, and it is the same with smells. -- George Sands

Some of my favorite smells:

  • Grass after its cut
  • Right before rain storms
  • Tea (chai or mint)
  • Fresh baked chocolate chip cookies
  • Clean laundry
  • Dirt (potting soil)
  • Babies
  • Sandalwood

What are some of yours?

Quote Wednesday - Tolkien

Still 'round the corner there may wait, a new road or a secret gate. -- J.R.R. Tolkien

Looking for that new something around the corner today...  Maybe a bit of direction.

Quote Wednesday - Disraeli

Every production of genius must be the production of enthusiasm. -- Benjamin Disraeli

How much effort do you put into your work?  If it isn't much, nothing incredibly will come.  I've been thinking about this a lot lately.  While I need a job, I am confused by what I want.  What will make me want to work hard?  What will I ultimately enjoy, even if the day to day can be rough.  I want a passion that could create something genius.

Quote Wednesday - Lowell

Art is the desire of a man to express himself, to record the reactions of his personality to the world he lives in. -- Amy Lowell

While I can't draw to save my life, I have learned that art is much more than painting and drawing.  When we create, it is art.  And every creation is an expression of our self.  We show the world a bit of our soul through our art.  It is a courageous thing to put into the public sphere, and yet it is almost like breathing.  We need to do it to live.   So today share a bit of our soul with another.

Quote Wednesday - Bachelard

To feel most beautifully alive means to be reading something beautiful. -- Gaston Bachelard

What beautiful things have you read lately?  After reading this quote, I immediately thought of Carlos Ruiz Zafon's The Shadow of the Wind.  That book was a gorgeous confession of love for stories and books.  Now I really want to grab the other two books in the series hoping that they will be just as beautiful.  Go check it out!

Quote Wednesday - cummings

The most wasted of all days is one without laughter. -- e.e. cummings

Instead of a quote discussion, I give you some funny videos to get a laugh...

My favorite line is at 6:00...

Quote Wednesday - Emerson

The sky is the daily bread of the eyes. -- Ralph Waldo Emerson

Ever just stop and stare at the sky...  try it.  I am sure you will be amazed at the beauty and majesty.  Is your sky currently blue, gray, full of clouds, clear, dusky, black?  Each one has its own beauty.  Stop, look up, marvel.  And maybe take a picture documenting the beauty...  Being in North Cali, I'm a bit homesick for the big thunder clouds of the Midwest (mind you I don't miss the ice storms and tornadoes).  I do have a new found appreciation for beautiful sunny days.  Just stepping out of the apartment fills me with hope.  Here's a pic from today to enjoy...

Quote Wednesday - McGuire

Stories are like fairy gold, the more you give away, the more you have. -- Polly McGuire

So I have failed at writing more fiction pieces this year.  I started out with a goal of writing at lest once a week.  And I have failed miserably.  I even have a dedicated notebook for short pieces.  I carry it with me almost everywhere and yet there's only four entries.  Bad Tobe!  I really need to get back to this.  I want ti create and give away fairy gold, so I can get more...

Quote Wednesday - Rage Against the Machine

If ignorance is bliss, then knock the smile off my face. -- Rage Against the Machine "Settle for Nothing"

I felt this was appropriate for all the crap on the news and about the election.  Do some fact checking and research for yourself instead of listening to the talking head.

Quote Wednesday - Morrison

There are things known and things unknown and in between are the doors.  -- Jim Morrison

Do you ever wake up in the morning and search for those doors?  I do.  For once I want to find the in between. While Morrison may have been high when he wrote that song, I still love the thought.  Enjoy your search for the doors today...

Quote Wednesday - Levine

Quote Wednesday is back.  I didn't mean to take a break, but with the medical issues, it just seemed to be too much of an effort.  My brain was so fried with the worrying and uncertainty and pain that I just couldn't read much less write.  But I'm back and trolling my old high school quote notebook for inspiration.  Yes, I have one of those.  Actually I have two high school to college quote notebooks.  I thought these would be great resources when I don't have a new weekly quote find.  Now, on to the quote...

Love is not what we become, but what we already are. -- Stephen Levine

What does it mean to love?  How do you love?  Is it something we aspire or already possess?  Interesting questions.  Might I suggest that we already possess the ability to love and a way to love inside of us.  We must bring it out to the forefront to be successful in loving someone.  Relatedly, we cannot change to love and we cannot change others to love  We must strive to find someone to love completely and someone who loves us completely.  I would be lying if I didn't want to change a few things about J, but that must not be my aim.  I must accept and love him as he is.  Just as he must accept me, quirks and all...

Quote Wednesday -- Rock Cyncism

The cruelest dream, reality. -- The Offspring

Some days, I get a bit cynical.  On days like this, I like listening to fairly angry, despairing music.  Just thought I would share.

Quote Wednesday -- Love Edition

Love is the triumph of imagination over intelligence. -- HL Menchen

A kiss is a lovely trick designed by nature to stop speech when words become superfluous. -- Ingrid Bergman

Love is of all passions the strongest, for it attacks simultaneously the head, the heart, and the senses. -- Voltaire

Love is a fruit in season at all times, and within reach of every hand. -- Mother Teresa

Treasure the love you receive above all.  It will survive long after you gold and good health have vanished. -- Og Mandino

Sometimes I'm in a mushy, lovey-dovey mood.  So I thought some great love quotes would be perfect for today.

Quote Wednesday -- FDR and MLK

The nation that destroys its soul destroys itself. -- Franklin Delano Roosevelt We will not be satisfied until justice rolls down like water and righteousness like a mighty stream.  Injustice anywhere is a threat to justice everywhere. -- Martin Luther King Jr.

Been thinking a lot lately about civil rights.   They've been in the news a lot.  Bottom line: everyone has a right to live as long as it doesn't hurt others.  And the big issues right now don't actually hurt anyone.  We need to look at domestic policy as a protection of civil rights, not as a way of ensuring our personal agendas or ways of life.

Quote Wednesday -- Montaigne, Socrates, and Fried

The value of life lies not in the length of days but in the use of them. -- Montaigne The greatest way to live with honor in this world is to be what we pretend to be. -- Socrates

It is no sin to attempt and fail.  The only sin is not to make the attempt. -- Suellen Fried

Some wise words to start off this hump day.  I especially love the first quote from Montaigne.  This summer I am all about taking advantage of the days given.  The boys and I are constantly on the move, spending as much time together as we can.
