September TBR Pile: Moving into spooky season and so my TBR pile is going to lean toward horror for the next two months. But I’m not quite sure what I’m planning on reading, so leaving the plan very vague.

  1. Bookworms BC: The Mermaid by Christina Henry (probably won’t reread as I just read this)

  2. Friend BC: Harry’s Trees by Jon Cohen

  3. Nerdy Bookish Friends BC: Timeline by Michael Crichton

  4. Kid Read Aloud: The One and Only Ivan by Katherine Applegate

  5. Kid Read Aloud: The Lightning Thief by Rick Riordan

  6. Kid Book Club: The Last Human by Lee Bacon

Movies Watched

  • The Blackening - Well, that was entertaining as hell.

  • Clive Davis: The Soundtrack of Our Lives - Very good retrospective music documentary. Lots of great highlights.

  • Red, White, and Royal Blue - A bit Hallmark-y but a decent young adult romance.

  • The Meg 2 - That was utterly ridiculous and I loved it.

TV Shows Watched - Apparently we cycled through a decent amount of television shows this month. More like a lot of these are currently airing and dropping one episode a week… But still, lots of good shows were watched.

  • The Witcher S3

  • The Righteous Gemstones S3

  • Foundation S2

  • Below Deck: Down Under S2

  • The Bachelorette

  • Shiny Happy People

  • Get Back

  • Agent Elvis S1

  • Killing It S2

  • The Great S3

  • Only Murders in the Building S3

  • Andor

Comments - Wow! Look at those totals. I thought that with the start of our homeschooling year and coop, my reading totals and television/movie watching would be very low. Somehow I found more of a balance than I thought I would. Very exciting for me.

  • Driven - I learned about Delorean from a weird history channel, so watched the movie. It was very good.

  • Fast X - The only real reason to watch was for Jason Momoa. I can’t believe this has ballooned into a trilogy!

TV Shows Watched

  • Human Target S1-2

Comments - Well June did not go as planned. I started out strong but a massive medical issue hit me about halfway through and curtailed our activities. I managed to listen to some audiobooks toward the end of the month keeping my reading totals up. Just could not use my eyes for much of anything. Here’s hoping July is kinder to me.

Movies Watched

  • Dungeons and Dragons - A family movie night choice that was enjoyed by all of us.

  • Renfield - Butterfly delightful and super campy. Loved it!

  • The Super Mario Bros Movie - The kids picked this one for movie night. I was not impressed at all.

  • Sisu - Sometimes we really need a violent movie about killing Nazis.

  • John Wick 4 - Much better than 2 and 3. Really enjoyed the choreography in this one.

TV Shows Watched

  • Ted Lasso S3 - Such a great redemption story. I cannot wait for the series finale.

  • Schmigadoon S2 - That was amazing. The song that started the finale was the best part.

  • The Big Door Prize S1 - Color me very intrigued by this one.

  • Below Deck: Sailing Yacht - My silly reality TV show.

  • Citadel S1 - A bit of a disappointment I must say.

  • The Great S3 - Utterly delightful.

  • Misfits S4 - Still working our way through this series. Love it!

  • Human Target S1 - J had me start this older series after I expressed disappointment in Citadel.

Comments - Wow! I think I had a great reading month. So many great reads, not too many duds. And I found some more recommendations for my retreat people. We’re moving into summer rhythms which means more activities and less reading. But that’s okay! We have to take advantage of the outdoor activities and travel plans.

Two BOTM selections for me this month. It was my birthday month and thankfully there were multiple books I wanted to take advanttage of my free add-on book. Finally I picked up a few book for the kids’ read aloud shelf.

Movies Watched

  • We Have a Ghost - We wanted to like it, but there was definitely some weird tonal shifts between the acts.

  • 7 Days in Hell - Somehow I hadn’t seen this and J was amazed. It was hilarious.

  • The Last Vermeer - Interesting art drama based on a true story. A little too slow at times, but a good movie.

  • Cocaine Bear - Lots of gory fun. The tone was a little off in parts, but an enjoyable ride.

  • Operation Fortune - Not the best Guy Ritchie movie, but a fun one.

  • Ex-Machina - We finally got to this movie. Predictable, but a good scifi movie.

TV Shows Watched

  • Brave New World - We blew through this series. It was a good adaptation. Very not safe for kids and teens.

  • History of the World Part II - Delightful! Not every sketch was hilarious, but most were entertaining.

  • The Toys that Build America - We sprinkle these in when we don’t have another currently watching choice.

  • The Mandalorian S3 - Still in this show. We’ll see where it goes.

  • Ted Lasso S3 - So excited to be back with Ted and the gang.

  • McMillion$ - Randomly we remembered about this documentary series about the McDonald’s Monopoly cheating scandal. It had so many twists and turns! Very interesting.

  • Misfits S1 - Finally started this show. So good so far. Very into it.

Comments - And my big reading month streak continues. Even though I added many books to my Unread Shelves, I actually took a few off between reading and unshelving. Just need to step up the game a bit.

Movies watched

  • Wakanda Forever - Very powerful. But we need to see more from Namor.

  • The Night Shift (1982) - Surprisingly pro-sex work movie from 40 years ago.

  • The Incredible Burt Wonderstone - J made me watch. Had some funny moments.

  • The Lost King - We really like British quiet comedies and this one was great.

TV Shows watched

  • His Dark Materials S2 & S3 - That was a whirlwind. Great adaption of the books.

  • The Bachelor - I can’t quit it…

  • Below Deck - My silly show.

  • Lego Masters (US) S2 - I called the top three teams. Very satisfied with the winners.

  • Doctor Who - We caught up with the specials that we apparently forgot about. Ready to see David Tennant do his limited run before Ncuti Gatwa takes over.

  • Killing It S1 - It was cancelled, but a funny and sometimes very serious show. Love Craig Robinson.

  • Clarkson’s Farm S2 - I was totally sucked into this one… Very compelling and funny.

  • Cunk on Earth - Well, that was ridiculous and delightful.

  • Brave New World - Very different from the book, but an interesting take on the story.

  • Slow Horses S2 - Back to this awesomeness.

Comments - Wow! I somehow read almost as much as I read in January. And that month I read a ton because of being down for surgery. Like most months, it was a mixed bag, but I made a dent in my TBR piles. We also watched some good television shows and movies. In fact, we binged a few seasons of various shows. We absolutely loved S2 of Slow Horses. Super excited that there will be a third season.

For my BOTM selection, I had to choose Babel by RF Kaung. It’s a book club choice for February and I’m very excited to read it.

During our book club exchange, I received Wake Siren by Nina McLaughlin. Very intrigued by this Ovid retelling.

For the Book Flood exchange, I received a copy of Broken by Jenny Lawson (already read, but wanted a physical copy) and Little Prisons by Ilona Bannister.

Had to stop in at Barnes & Noble for their 50% off all hardcovers sale. I grabbed The Night Ship by Jess Kidd, The Last Graduate by Naomi Novak, and A Psalm for the Wild-Built by Becky Chambers (already read this one, but wanted a physical copy).

Movies watched

  • Christmas with You - I like the female lead, but her and the male lead have absolutely no chemistry what so ever!

  • Get Carter - Classic Michael Caine. Very violent, I actually enjoyed it.

  • Bullit - Never saw this classic Steve McQueen movie. Enjoyed it.

  • The Misfits - Terribly boring…

  • Glass Onion - Not quite as good as the first movie, but still very entertaining.

  • Harry Potter 20th Anniversary - Very delightful.

  • Artemis Fowl - My mom’s selection. Pretty decent kid action film.

  • Something from Tiffany’s - Very cute holiday romance.

  • Staged S3 - Utterly delightful. We binged it in just three days.

  • Prey - We’ve decided that this one was the best of the Predator movies. So incredibly good!

  • See How They Run - Love a screwball comedy.

  • Samrat Prithviraj - Over the top Bollywood film. Loved it!

  • RRR - Another absolute bonkers Bollywood movie.

  • Weird: The Al Yankovic Story - Loved his “totally true” story of Weird Al’s life.

  • Red Cliff - Chinese epic that was amazing even if there was some propaganda involved.

  • Rope - A classic Hitchcock starring Jimmy Stewart that I’ve never actually seen. Very good.

  • Infinity Baby - What did I just watch? Very strange movie.

  • The Sound of 007 - Loved this music doc.

  • The Addams Family - Introduced the kids to the 1990s movie. It holds ip fairly well.

  • What We Did on Our Holiday - Surprisingly serious.

  13. Kid Book Club: The Girl Who Drank the Moon by Kelly Barnhill

Movies watched

  • Morbius - Terrible mess of a movie. Only the scenes with Matt Smith were good.

  • Underworld - A rewatch so we can finish this series. Not terrible.

  • Underworld: Evolution - Worse than the first one definitely, but I don’t think absolutely terrible.

  • Underworld: Rise of the Lycans - Thought we had watched this one, but I remembered nothing. Still enjoy Michael Sheen, but that’s about it.

  • Underworld: Awakening - The low point in the series. The narrative was a jumbled mess with lots of retconning throughout. Charles Dance was a joy.

  • Underworld: Blood Wars - Better than the last one, but not great. There were so many larger mythology issues, but the movie’s plot line was tighter.

  • Blade - Decent superhero movie pre-MCU

  • Blade II - Somehow I never actually watched this one. A mess of a plot and terrible CGI.

  • Blade: Trinity - Decent conclusion to the trilogy. Of course I love the inclusion of Ryan Reynolds.

  • Mad God - Phil Tippett’s passion project. Very weird and disturbing in parts, but a vision of animation of imagination.

  • Alien - Always enjoy watching this one.

  • Aliens - A very decent sequel. Much more action than horror, but still a great movie.

  • Predator - Haven’t rewatched in years. I actually enjoyed this one mostly.

  • Predator 2 - A new watch for me. Pretty terrible characters (and seriously egregious female nudity scene), but I did like more content focused on the Predator.

  • Alien 3 - Not sure that it’s a favorite, but interesting. Totally forgot that Charles Dance is in this one.

  • Alien Resurrection - Never saw it. Definitely a interesting one. I was rooting of the xenomorphs throughout this one.

  • Alien Vs. Predator - Oof Don’t think about the plot line too much. I did enjoy a few of the action sequences.

  • Alien Vs. Predator 2 - Not good. Not good at all.

  • Predators - Decent movie. We’ve found that the Predator series is more consistent than the Alien series (but I think that Alien is the best movie still).

  • Alien: Prometheus - Very pretty, but the plotline left much confusion. Not quite sure how it really fits into the original Alien series.

  • Alien: Covenant - Like this one better than the previous, but still confused abut the larger timeline/plot. Did love Michael Fassbender’s David!

TV Shows watched

  • Archer

  • Batchelor in Paradise

  • Below Deck: Mediterranean

  • Last Week Tonight

  • Lower Decks S3

  • Ghosts S (UK)

  • Avenue 5 S2 - I didn’t even realize that they were making a second season.

Comments - A very decent showing for Spooky Book and Month month! We ended up watching three big sci-fi/fantasy series and I read over 50% from my shelves. I had so much fun leaning into the spooky that I am going to carry it into next month as well. Used to stop on November 1st, but it’s my favorite time of the year, I’m going to continue.

October TBR Pile: It’s spooky book month! I’m trying to focus on the spooky and the horror for this month’s reads (excepting my Friend BC selection). I thought about making a much longer TBR, but only put some top contenders and then will just pick up what I like afterward that.

  2. Friend BC: The Midwife’s Revolt by Jodi Daynard

  3. Nerdy Bookish Friends BC: Her Majesty’s Royal Coven by Juno Dawson

  4. Currently Reading Bookish Friends BC: The Book Eaters by Sunyi Dean

Movies watched

  • The Road to Wellville - Somehow I totally missed this movie when it came out. J had me watch. Very weird and delightful.

  • Listening to Kenny G - Surprised (and yet not) about how oblivious he is about so many things.

  • The Story of Bohemian Rhapsody - Decent little BBC doc about the making of a song.

  • Little Women - Better than I thought it would be, but I’m not convinced that the time cuts were necessary.

  • Creem: America’s Only Rock ‘n’ Roll Magazine - I never read Creem, but had hear about it. Loved getting to know the story.

  • Thor: Love and Thunder - I enjoyed the humor; not a huge fan of the sad emotional content.

  • Moog - Ooof lots of rambling from Moog. Not a good storyline.

  • Summer of Soul - Fascinating topic! I loved hearing about all the musical acts.

  • The Wrecking Crew - Another fascinating story about behind-the-scenes musicians.

  • Vinyl Nation - Loved learning more about the making of vinyl records.

  • Gimme Danger - A doc about The Stooges, sign me up! I would have liked a bit more from othe musicians about the legacy of The Stooges.

  • Stop Making Sense - This 1984 Talking Heads concert film was like a time capsule. Loved every minute of it.

TV Shows watched

  • Little Demon S1 - Love quirky cartoons

  • What We Do in the Shadows S3 - Another great season

  • The Orville S3 - I’m very meh about this series now

  • Sonic Highways - I really really loved this doc-series focused on one city each episode.

  • Lower Decks S3 - Really enjoy this series.

  • Rick & Morty S6 - Off to a great start of this season.

  • Archer S13 - I can’t believe this show is still running! Love it!

Comments - A very decent showing this month for books and tv shows/movies. I don’t feel like we watched or read much this month, but I was wrong after writing this all out. Looking forward to October’s spooky movie and books month.

  • The World According to Jeff Goldblum - Our fun silly show.

  • Once Upon a Time, Happily Never After - So incredibly weird! But I absolutely loved it!

  • Hustle S8 - We finally finished the series!

  • Last Week Tonight

  • Are You Afraid of the Dark S1 - I started rewatching the original series. Still love these episodes.

  • Shadow and Bone S1 - Finished the season and cannot wait to see how they deal with season two.

  • Starstruck S1-2 - My random pick. It’s a less vulgar version of Fleabag and I really enjoy it.

  • Minx S1 - My new favorite show! I absolutely adore the exploration of feminism in the 1970s.

  • Slow Horses S1 - We are very into this spy thriller show.

  • The Righteous Gemstones S1-2 - Finished season one and started in on season two. This family is just so wacky we can’t resist.

Comments - Overall a very good showing for reading and media this month. I finally read a series that J has been pushing for years. I finished my contemporary romance and I buddy read some decent middle grade with Arthur.

Books Bought/Received (28) - This is going to be a huge number. March is my birthday month and I always go a bit crazy with books during my birthday month.

Book of the Month order - I grabbed my free book for my birthday month and two others

  • The Cartographers by Peng Shepherd

  • The Rules of Civility by Amor Towles

My stepmom got me a GC to Barnes & Noble, so had to grab a few.

  • Dry by Neal Shusterman

  • A Curious Beginning by Deanna Raybourn

  • Feed by Mira Grant (I’ve already read, would like to have a copy for my shelves.)

  • Illuminae by Amie Kaufman and Jay Kristoff

  • The Rise and Fall of D.O.D.O. by Neal Stephenson and Nicole Galland

  • Scary Stories to Tell in the Dark retold by Alvin Schwartz (childhood favorite that I didn’t have in print)

  • Still Life with Crows by Douglas Preston and Lincoln Child

On my actual birthday, I stopped in at Half Price Books and saw a few I needed.

  • The Age of Miracles by Karen Thompson Walker

  • More Scary Stories to Tell in the Dark retold by Alvin Schwartz

  • Scary Stories 3 More Tales to Chill Your Bones retold by Alvin Schwartz

  • Number the Stars by Lois Lowry (childhood favorite to add to our kids read aloud selections)

My Book Outlet Order arrived with mostly goodies for homeschooling, but a few things for me!
